I was 9 when this whitbread was raced. My father worked @ F&P and we got to go on Steinlager, F&P and Fazizi (Russian Entry) while they stopped off here. I also stayed the night on top of Rangitoto to watch the yachts coming in. Was about 3am but the water was littered with boats watching Steinlager & F&P battle it out up the Auckland Harbour. These videos have brought back memories that i'd forgotten. Thanks for posting!
The opening 9 seconds of this clip were from a camera aboard Fisher & Paykel on the Freemantle to Auckland leg. F&P was far out in the Great Australian Bight, heading for Auckland at 29 knots, because that's what the helmsman's readout was saying. Then the camera panned aft and there, 30 metres behind them, surfing down their wake, was Steinlager. A yachting expert later said that to drive those hulls at that speed the sails were developing 5,000 horsepower.

In this race there were only two yachts that were going to win the legs and they were both from New Zealand
