This ending was better because it actually shows a point for all the pain and suffering: the Narrator changed. Had he but a bullet in his brain, all this would have been in vain.

This is far from a happy ending. I mean, the Narrator had some severe mental problems and he was likely wanted and later imprisoned for Project Mayhem.

Maybe, but I don't think the novel or the movie was about some evil organization. The motivation for Project Mayhem was frustration. The men, although enjoying the vandalism, wanted their life to change for the better.

I think that (or maybe I hope that) within the canon of the novel/movie there wouldn't be anybody around to imprison the narrator as civilisation would invariably collapse under the stress of an obliterated credit sytem, additionally you can actually see in this scene the entire city blackout possibly signifying an attack on the national power grid. IMO it's completly amazing, how this movie greatly begins and so poorly ends. i mean that from the begining, it carries great ideas about absurdity and flimsiness of daily routine and society, and in the end, it turns out to be just another american action movie without a point.

The narrator invents Tyler because he is bored with his life and has nothing to live for and wouldn't have anything to show for his life if he died. When the narrator shot himself to kill Tyler and save Marla, it meant that he was no longer afraid to die because he now had purpose (Marla), and no longer needed Tyler. The "point" is to do something with your life.

It's symbolic. he tells Tyler that his eyes are open, meaning he can see Tyler was right about a lot of things but that he's gone too far. shooting himself in the head was just meant to show that he could make his own decisions in life. By voluntarily shooting himself in the head, he was beating out the Tyler side of this brain sorta like killing off his dependency to him.
