Not in the video, so here's some info from the linked article that might make the accuracy of the project more apparent;
The roughness of the sphere is limited to 0.3nm in variation; a human hair is approx. 333,000 times as wide.
The curve of the surface compared to a sphere is accurate 60 to 70 nm, about 1/1500 the width of a human hair.
If it were as big as Earth, the biggest local error would be ~half an inch high, and the total sphere would be less than 17 feet from perfectly round.
@Kanakotka You managed to come to that conclusion from a little Minecraft joke? And no, I'm pretty sure there are far worse things in the world. In fact, my support for an indie developer infers the opposite.
@Kanakotka You are really making something out of nothing here. I've made a physics joke before, does that mean I hate all sciences? No, in fact quite the opposite. My joke has nothing to do with my opinion on the accomplishment.
I always thought that if you were to look at something absolutely perfectly round, it would do funny things to your eyes and brain, never seeing something that round before, without flaws. I think it does, but it probably would work better in person.
this object is round to a degree that if it was scaled to earths size, there would only be a slight slope increase leading to a total height of +- 3 meters.
This sounds like a lot until you realize the earth is 12,756.32 kilometers (12.75 million meters) across, and the current bulge on the equator is 41,000 meters.
I'm saying if you scale it up to the size of earth, the ridges would only be +-3 meters on the ORB, not the earth. And no, you need to get your facts straight, the earth is ovular, not egg shaped. It bulges at the equator due to massive pressures from the spin. Its more of a squished orb, rather than an egg.
So please,
1. learn RIT to help you in life
2. Get YOUR facts straight
3. Never quote wikipedia, it makes you look stupid.

*whew*...well I for one am certainly glad and breathing a sigh of relief that we've dodged the bullet of the world's spherical shortage!!! Thank you Germany!!
Wait...are they saying that every other sphere created (ball bearings, etc) are all NOT perfectly spherical???
Germany --- once almost took over Europe in an attempt to promote the "master race". Now...left drinking beer and making perfect balls.
@pottermonster They needed some excuse to spend our tax dollars in order to get the same amount next year. So they blew it on round balls. Next year, they'll be making the cubiest cubes in the world.
People are totally crazy - they spent so much money, time and energy and what is the result? The roundest ball. What a great work for the benefit of all mankind.
@paramak look at the link to the article provided; they're trying to find a replacement for the current way of deciding how much a kilogram is because the various international weights they currently use are deviating from eachother. Try making an accurate concentration of a chemical for a medicine which needs milligram precision to get the difference right between killing or curing the patient when the instructions are from a country using a different measure for what a kilogram is to yours!!!
The reason they are attempting to make a very close to perfect sphere is so that it can be used as a physical standard for the kilogram. That way they can say that a kilogram is defined as the mass of a perfect sphere of x radius composed of y isotope of silicon. This definition would be much more precise than the current one. Of course there are some other scientists who have proposed standards based on, for example, electric forces. However, no new standard has been officially adopted yet.
@bigexodus Hmm, maybe I should go over what the current kilogram prototype is. It's a cylinder of platinum-iridium alloy currently stored in Paris. The alloy is quite durable, but comparisons to some of it's "sister" copies in other countries indicates that minuscule fluctuations in mass do occur over time. This issue has lead to the search for alternate kilogram prototypes, e.g. the silicon spheres in the video. Well that's enough of that. My, my, I do digress sometimes, don't I? Silly me.
@yoitsme717 People can spend money on whatever they want. I'd buy an ice cream you might buy a doughnut - choice is free. As for useless, this sort of experiment gives information about the world we live in and may lead to any kind of discovery! - Blue skies research ftw ^_^
