this is awesome. the camp sites you guys stayed at looked beautiful. I'm quite jealous at how many moose you saw too. cant wait to be back out in the wilderness...
@gyates93 No, I don't use a tump strap. Instead I pack my pack high (it's a hikers pack, not a traditional canoe pack which packs low) so when I'm wearing it and have the boat over me, it's tall enough to press on the floor of the boat which puts some of the boats weight on my hips. It's hard on the pack and I keep two patches on the top of mine to keep the boat from chaffing it's way through the material. My pack is an Arc'teryx Bora 80 though, so it takes the abuse like a champ.
How much did your packs weigh at the start of this trip? 60-70 pounds?
Also did you single carry the portages and take turns having the canoe (and your pack), or do double carries? the double carries are more doable, but then you end up walking every portage 3 times. I'm still trying to figure out the best strategy for multi day trips.
Concerning the packs, we actually had three. We each had our own pack and we had a separate food pack that the person who wasn't carrying the canoe would lug with them strapped to their front. Unfortunately we didn't have a scale handy but I would guess the packs were around 35-40lbs each (possibly lighter) and the food pack was on the heavy side at about 30-35 lbs. (a little more than 2lbs per person per day). This way it makes for a more tolerable trip for the one carrying the canoe.
As far as double or single carry goes for portages, I *always* do them in one shot. I've tried the double carry before on 1.6km and swore to never do it again. Having said that, it really depends on how you see things. I go for short term pain and then I'm done with it rather than dragging it on. One of the best pieces of advice I picked up years ago and swear by is that it's not the amount of weight on your shoulders, it's how long it's there for so I walk quickly.
I tried single carrying but with a 50-60 pound pack (including mater and fuel etc)plus a 16 ft canoe, it was a killer. We found the double carry a lot more doable on our trip, although it adds a lot of time and distance to the portages.
This year I will work on cutting down the weight we carry, plus I bought a "Hooligan Pad" to try to give me some relief from the yoke digging into my neck and shoulders. Hopefully I can get the single carries to work for me this year.
I see you kept with the bannock and grilled cheese. I saw a recipe for bannock pizza on youtube somewhere. I made it at home and it was good. Just like the grilled cheese but you add dehydrated tomato sauce.

How many moose did you see!?!
I'm thoroughly jealous.
Do you use a tump strap when carrying the canoe? I find it makes those portages a lot easier on the shoulders.

We started to actually lose count, I think it was around 7+

You read my mind, I'm planning on dehydrating some tomato sauce for just that. Should be a real treat! I'll post the results when I try it out.
