You kinda look like a skinnier Kevin Spacey.. I mean I really enjoy your videos. They're amazing. But every time I watch one I think, "Kevin Spacey"..
Amazing. So beautiful. The best version of an Elliott Smith cover that I've ever heard. Just wonderful. This, for me, was his most beautifully-arranged song and you've performed it perfectly. I can't praise you enough!
This is incredibly precise and thought out. Thank you for taking the time to cover this. One of my favorite covers of all time. No joke. I REALLY want to learn this too. Any help with the picking pattern? I'm still pretty new at fingerpicking and this sounds really difficult.
Oh my god! That was just ridiculous. Elliott would be honored to have seen you cover this with such precision and attention to detail. Amazing talent. Do you learn these by ear? At your skill level I don't doubt you're a fully capable musician. I'm still at the "where are the tabs?" phase of my guitar career.
holy shit this is the best cover of this song i've seen. this just blows me away. i feel really inadequate knowing that there are people like you this good out there :) just amazing
Unbelievably good ES covers! But really, the production you're doing is totally open ended if you think about it. You've perfected a form, you should just feed it your own arrangements now! Awesome man, truly. Such a good idea to use ES's work as a foundation for a prod. environment.
Hi there, what tuning is this in? Is it standard, dropped D, a full step down or a combination depending on the guitar (as I suspect). Thanks for your help!
That's a very nice guild you have. And you play it well! My only suggestion would be to knock off the melodyne/autotune a bit on the backing vocals... it tends to make vocals phase together a little.
@MindControll A beard of course .... your vision is spectacular !!
plectrum if you grew a beard you would give off the John Fahey aura. your playing is great but I think mindcontroll should be your stylist. Beard's give so much depth to people that are talented. I have no beard..... only deserve stubble
Hey guy, so good to hear you again! Just for cusrious ears, how many tracks is this? i can't help my enthusiasim for your covers. Awsome work in every aspect
Wow, I'm a guitarplayer for myself but it always strikes me to see how so seemingly effortlessly some people can play this song. I cannot figure out how to play it, and there are no decent tabs for this song online, or are there ?
hi, first of all kudos, absolutely flawless and with perfect timing. i can play all of the song now apart from the bridge and its so busy i am strggling to figure it by ear and all the tabs i find dont quite seem to be right. have you got a tab for the bridge in standard tuning?
Oh hell yeah. I just left a comment on another guys cover saying how brilliant it was, and that he should tour, just so we can half-see/hear elliott now, like we no longer really can.
...then i came about your version. Lol.. even better.
Hi Steve...yeah,that's correct,it's standard tuning but in the case of this song he tuned all the strings one step down...the low E,A,D,and G strings are all 1 octave higher than on a regular six string,so the diameters you list here sound about right(with the exception of the low E which would normally be thicker than .010)
thanks for your help, really good layered effect. i would go to far as to say its better than the original! but would love to hear no name #5 as the ending to the song is so powerful i feel.
I would thoroughly love a video tutorial of this. Just going through the basic chords quickly, but the picking style especially. If you could do that, I think every Elliot Smith fan and every guitar player would thank you thoroughly. Great job on the cover too. I found what I am doing over winter break...trying to learn this
really, unbelievably, absolutely amazing. i cried hard. Elliott is smiling down on you in appreciation for the effort you put into this. you are amazing. thank you so much for making this.
WOW. Unbelievable, man. It sounds awesome as it is, and I can only imagine how much better in stereo. One of the best covers I've heard in my life. Just started learning how to play the guitar and I'm just overwhelmed watching this; lots of respect!
I did do a stereo mix initially and tried posting it using the FLV method that worked previously but unfortunately that method no longer works so I re-posted in mono...I really wish youtube hadn't put a stop to that method, music sounded much better that way.
One of my Elliott's favorite songs, your rendition is perfect.
Please accept my deepest respect and appreciation. Can I ask if you'll try to make a cover of his "Waltz #1"? I love this song very much and it would be great to listen to you playing it.
Thanks for your positive comments.I actually don't consider myself smart enough to be a nerd but I do wish that youtube would do a better job converting the audio on uploads.
did you layer Smith's voice on top of yours? You sound astonishingly alike. A true marvel how you are able to sound like so many diff artists and a lovely job!
Thanks for your positive comments...nothing sampled from the original recording here(or on any of the others),for better or worse it's all played and sung by me.
Thanks again...the guitar is a model JF30,not sure what year but I bought it new between 10 and 15 years ago...I actually got it at a greatly reduced cost because it had a very noticeable crack in the finish.
Thanks for your positive comments and for subscribing...I have been asked by quite a few people so far about posting something original,I hope to at some point but nothing imminent, for now I'm having fun just posting these covers.
Thanks for all of your positive comments and for subscribing...unfortunately I don't have any tabs for this,I pretty much just figured it out by ear but I know there are some other good versions out there on youtube, perhaps one of those might also be helpful for the purposes of learning the song...good luck with it.
This is hands down the best job I've seen/heard covering a song. I haven't checked out your profile yet, but I certainly hope you are using your abilities to write songs as well. Ironically enough, I just started working with a female musician here in Portland that was one of Elliott's friends. We're going to try to collaborate on music.
It sounds good. However it sounds like you're using Melodine or some vocal processor that is making your voice lose a little quality. (especially in the higher harmonies)
Sounds good either way (I could be mistaken). I enjoyed it.
Very nicely done. And thanks for posting the proper tuning, because it was confusing me for awhile.
I know you're all about layering and making it sound identical to a CD, but have you ever thought about making a one-take video? The videos I made were all one-takes, so I'm just curious as to how you'd approach it...
Thanks for your positive comments...actually 6 of my 20 vids so far are just 1 guitar and vocal with no other layering but I think you might be referring to how I would approach this one in particular...I would say similar to how he played it live, mostly with this arrangement only in standard tuning and down a half step.
Wow - this is awesome. Your attention to detail is very impressive. Harmonies sound great. You even managed a similar vocal effect to the one he used (as well as the doubling). What is that? A bit of phaser? Really impressed - gonna go check your others out.....
Thanks for your positive comments...interesting you should mention that "phaser" effect on the vocal,I noticed that too although I actually didn't put any effect on there,I think it's a by product of the close doubling and the particular intervals being sung...these are the sort of interesting details of the original recordings that make themselves known as I attempt these "close" covers and why they're fun to do.
Thanks again for your positive comments...a few people have asked about possibly posting something original, not at the moment but perhaps at sometime in the future.
Thanks again Amy...I'm playing a Guild jumbo 12 string, but as I mentioned in the info section I took off all the doubles to get the Nashville tuning thing happening, then the whole thing tuned down a step,so DGCFAD
Excellent as always Rich. Thanks for explaining about the layering. I love how you pulled this off--the effortless sliding, hammering bits meld perfectly. It's absolutely a one of a kind sound that Elliott created, and you captured every nuance! Awesome!
Say Rich, how did you set up your cam on this one? It gives the option for high or standard quality. 16X9 ratio?
Thanks again for your positive comments...no,as with all my previous posts I recorded it in 4:3,youtube appears to have stretched it out which is I guess why my face appears shorter and fatter than usual...but at least there is that watch in high quality option you mentioned,if you click that it doesn't seem to look any better but it does sound better,a bit crisper I think...I've seen this option on a bunch of vids but this is the first time on one of mine, perhaps a new policy with youtube
I think the layering came out great. By the way, was finally able to nail "Road" - very difficult trying to get that one down just by ear.
You do very well with the ES covers - when ya gonna stick some originals up there, then? I'd say "don't be shy." except for the fact that I haven't gotten past my "stage fright" enough to be able to play something all the way through flawlessly on film... ahh well.
Thanks again Jess for your positive comments...people have been asking me more and more lately to post something original,I'm not a lyricist but I really should set aside some time to write something I could post, even if it's just instrumental...congrats on learning Road,I know from experience it's not an easy one.
lol - seems as if we suffer the same complex. I have music without words, and lyrics (poetry) without music. You think it would be easy to combine the two?? Best of luck on that. If you think you can set some music to my poetry, send me a PM - would be honoured to see what you could come up with.
Would you do a cover of an Elliot Smith or Nick Drake song where you give your interpritation of it, rather than just doing an amazing cover, I would love to see that!
Thanks again for your positive comments...yeah,so far only my cover of Parasite has been my own arrangement but I plan on slipping in some more where I do my own take on some of these songs.
hmm i like it, but i'd like to see you do this stuff without any fancy studio equipment or backing-vocals and -instruments...then i would be more impressed i think
Thanks for your comments...actually I like that approach as well,6 of my 20 posts so far are just 1 guitar and vocal, but the most fun I get out of doing these is to pick out a song that I feel has a great arrangement and then to try and play and sing all the parts and hear it all come together in my studio...plus,I think the vast majority of covers on youtube are just 1 instrument and voice so this approach adds a little variety...but I realize it's not to everyones taste.
don't worry about it only being in mono - it's still sounds great! apart from the spot-on harmonies, my favourite bit is your pinky finger on your right hand... it looks so left out!.... maybe you should attach a small tambourine to it?... you know, give it something to do! 5 stars.
Thanks alot for your positive comments, glad it still sounds ok...yeah,that pinky is rather odd looking, dangling out there as it is...one person commented that it made my right hand look like a strange creature.
this is amazing, i would be very proud of this if i were you

Hey R, Your more info descibes the Nashville Tunning but I find others in my searches.
Found this on You Tube as well... Yours would seem more interesting.
Tuning is low to high EADGBE
String set is .010 .014 .008 .012 .018 .010 (high to low)
It looks to me to be standard tunning but different strings diameters. Which is right?
Keep up the great works, my hero...Stevie
StevieRich 3 years ago
Hi Steve...yeah,that's correct,it's standard tuning but in the case of this song he tuned all the strings one step down...the low E,A,D,and G strings are all 1 octave higher than on a regular six string,so the diameters you list here sound about right(with the exception of the low E which would normally be thicker than .010)

Thanks again for your positive comments...a few people have asked about possibly posting something original, not at the moment but perhaps at sometime in the future.

Purely excellent version of my favorite Elliot
Smith song. Brilliant guitar playing! 5*
What kind of guitar are you picking here? *Amy

16X9 ratio?
NickDrake101 3 years ago

You are so good everytime!
Would you do a cover of an Elliot Smith or Nick Drake song where you give your interpritation of it, rather than just doing an amazing cover, I would love to see that!

Thanks again for your positive comments...yeah,so far only my cover of Parasite has been my own arrangement but I plan on slipping in some more where I do my own take on some of these songs.
plectrum34 3 years ago
Ahh cool I've definetly heard your arrangement of Parasite since I've seen all your videos, but I will be sure to check it out again :D
Thanks

hmm i like it, but i'd like to see you do this stuff without any fancy studio equipment or backing-vocals and -instruments...then i would be more impressed i think
Rooiebert 3 years ago
Thanks for your comments...actually I like that approach as well,6 of my 20 posts so far are just 1 guitar and vocal, but the most fun I get out of doing these is to pick out a song that I feel has a great arrangement and then to try and play and sing all the parts and hear it all come together in my studio...plus,I think the vast majority of covers on youtube are just 1 instrument and voice so this approach adds a little variety...but I realize it's not to everyones taste.

I agree with the last comment, would love to hear "Color Bars" or even "Pretty (Ugly Before)"

That was lovely! I'd be great to hear your version of 'Colour Bars'. I'm sure you could layer that to perfection.

don't worry about it only being in mono - it's still sounds great! apart from the spot-on harmonies, my favourite bit is your pinky finger on your right hand... it looks so left out!.... maybe you should attach a small tambourine to it?... you know, give it something to do! 5 stars.
berondi 3 years ago
Thanks alot for your positive comments, glad it still sounds ok...yeah,that pinky is rather odd looking, dangling out there as it is...one person commented that it made my right hand look like a strange creature.
