  • this is amazing, i would be very proud of this if i were you

  • You kinda look like a skinnier Kevin Spacey.. I mean I really enjoy your videos. They're amazing. But every time I watch one I think, "Kevin Spacey"..

  • Amazing. So beautiful. The best version of an Elliott Smith cover that I've ever heard. Just wonderful. This, for me, was his most beautifully-arranged song and you've performed it perfectly. I can't praise you enough!

  • that was great man, Elliott Smith was my hero (as a person and a musician) thanks for posting it.

  • This is incredibly precise and thought out. Thank you for taking the time to cover this. One of my favorite covers of all time. No joke. I REALLY want to learn this too. Any help with the picking pattern? I'm still pretty new at fingerpicking and this sounds really difficult.

  • Are you farmiliar with the first AMERICA album? (Self Titled?)

You might also like Leo Kottke - 6 and 12 string guitars.

  • I think that we can all agree that Elliott Smith is easily one of the best musicians....EVER!!! Seriously, every single album of his is brilliant.

  • Oh my god! That was just ridiculous. Elliott would be honored to have seen you cover this with such precision and attention to detail. Amazing talent. Do you learn these by ear? At your skill level I don't doubt you're a fully capable musician. I'm still at the "where are the tabs?" phase of my guitar career.

  • Awesome. Auto tuned at all?? Either way, very well done.

  • holy shit this is the best cover of this song i've seen. this just blows me away. i feel really inadequate knowing that there are people like you this good out there :) just amazing

  • Just stumbled upon, amazing cover. Conjured up some very sentimental thoughts of Elliott.

  • Unbelievably good ES covers! But really, the production you're doing is totally open ended if you think about it. You've perfected a form, you should just feed it your own arrangements now! Awesome man, truly. Such a good idea to use ES's work as a foundation for a prod. environment.

  • TABSSSSSSSSS!!!1

  • btw u look like tory velleci from mythbusters

  • you are too damn good at that, that was awseome. that was crazy hahaha, blew my mind!

  • Totally blown away.

  • Hi there, what tuning is this in? Is it standard, dropped D, a full step down or a combination depending on the guitar (as I suspect). Thanks for your help!

  • All i can say is Bravo!

  • HOLY F*%K. That was absolutely the most skillful recreation of this song I have ever heard. Thank you so much for sharing it.

  • I.....want to learn this so bad. Now I don't think I can. Ever. Nor do I want to anymore. Bravo.

  • very good job ! according to your explanations, the 3rd string should be F and not G, isn't it ? do you have it tabbed by any chance? ;-)

  • wow. this is a very very good cover. keep it up.

  • More Elliott from you me thinks. Hurry up! ;)

  • Hands down the best and most accurate cover I've ever seen

  • hahaha... this is Brilliant!!!

  • This is TOO ACCURATE for words...Bravo.

  • Hi Plectrum34; this is my favorite ES tune; you nailed it so perfect; the harmonies are excellent and the guitar picking so steady & perfect!!!!

    , Amy

  • Wow. amazing. subbed!

    -Cyrus

  • wow that was fkn brilliant, definitely one of the hardest elliott songs to play and you nailed it,

  • That's a very nice guild you have. And you play it well! My only suggestion would be to knock off the melodyne/autotune a bit on the backing vocals... it tends to make vocals phase together a little.

Well done though - are those acrylic nails?

  • Crazy good

  • dude this is an amazing cover!! i really want to learn this song. definetoly my favourite elliot song

  • Fantastic cover. I am incredibly impressed. Great job man!

  • Hands down, this is very VERY good. I love your covers!!

  • Best Elliott cover dude, way to go.

  • Aamzing.

  • this turned me on a bit

  • wow you are the shit bro you are flawless with nicks music and elliotts never seen such amazing covers in my life

  • Very beautiful I like it.

    is it a guild 212?

  • PERFECT!!

  • absolutely stunning cover ! it blew my mind out :-)

  • "GLORIOUS' !!!!! You Are Too Too Perfect!

The Great departed ones should be Applauding you because you do Both NICK and ELLIOT proud !!!!!

  • SO GOOD it almost made me cry

  • This is the SINGLE BEST faithful cover I have ever heard. Fantastic.

  • Marvelous.

  • i want to be you

AND IF I WAS I WOULD GROW A BEARD

  • @MindControll A beard of course .... your vision is spectacular !!

plectrum if you grew a beard you would give off the John Fahey aura. your playing is great but I think mindcontroll should be your stylist. Beard's give so much depth to people that are talented. I have no beard..... only deserve stubble

  • omg this is amazing

  • Holy shit. I sort of want to be you, or at the very least I would like to have your equipment.

    So, yeah, any originals?

  • you arre ridiculous, do you do originals?

(ridiculous as in incredible, phenomenal, etc)

  • Hey guy, so good to hear you again! Just for cusrious ears, how many tracks is this? i can't help my enthusiasim for your covers. Awsome work in every aspect

    Peace

  • Hi Steve...this wasn't quite as many as some of the others as I remember,I think 3 guitar tracks and 5 or so vocal tracks

  • Man, you rock. Almost as good as the original. Maybe you could be more awesome at keeping time. What a feat... he'd be proud.

  • Wow, I'm a guitarplayer for myself but it always strikes me to see how so seemingly effortlessly some people can play this song. I cannot figure out how to play it, and there are no decent tabs for this song online, or are there ?

  • This is by far the best cover of Elliott Smith I've seen on Youtube. Kudos.

  • woooow!!

  • Extremely well done. Wow.

  • hi, first of all kudos, absolutely flawless and with perfect timing. i can play all of the song now apart from the bridge and its so busy i am strggling to figure it by ear and all the tabs i find dont quite seem to be right. have you got a tab for the bridge in standard tuning?

  • youve got talent.

that is all that needs to be said.

  • Oh hell yeah. I just left a comment on another guys cover saying how brilliant it was, and that he should tour, just so we can half-see/hear elliott now, like we no longer really can.

...then i came about your version. Lol.. even better.

  • Jesus that was absolutely faultless! You should be very pleased with yourself, Elliott would be proud!

  • I'm really glad I found your videos! Some pretty serious talent here. Play on brother!

  • Thanks for all of your positive comments and for subscribing.

  • Amazing.

One of my all-time favourite songs.

Did you figure it out all by ear?

  • Thanks for your positive comments...yes,for the most part just played what I heard on the original.

  • awesome job. has anyone ever told you that you slightly resemble trey parker?

  • Hey R, Your more info descibes the Nashville Tunning but I find others in my searches.

Found this on You Tube as well... Yours would seem more interesting.

Tuning is low to high EADGBE

    String set is .010 .014 .008 .012 .018 .010 (high to low)

It looks to me to be standard tunning but different strings diameters. Which is right?

Keep up the great works, my hero...Stevie

  • Hi Steve...yeah,that's correct,it's standard tuning but in the case of this song he tuned all the strings one step down...the low E,A,D,and G strings are all 1 octave higher than on a regular six string,so the diameters you list here sound about right(with the exception of the low E which would normally be thicker than .010)

  • This guy is channeling Elliott Smith! Fuckin brilliant.

  • One of the most talented cats on YT pointed me to this one...glad he did

  • Excellent! Really beautiful! Well done!

  • thanks for your help, really good layered effect. i would go to far as to say its better than the original! but would love to hear no name #5 as the ending to the song is so powerful i feel.

  • hi im very new to u tube etc, wheres the description box lol? awesome 12 string too. think i may invest in one, truley inspired thanks.

  • Thanks again...look on the upper right side of the page and click "more info" underneath my screen name.

  • yo what tuning did you use? thanks in advance, great work too!

  • Thanks for your positive comments...check the description box for tuning info.

  • No,no formal training.

  • I would thoroughly love a video tutorial of this. Just going through the basic chords quickly, but the picking style especially. If you could do that, I think every Elliot Smith fan and every guitar player would thank you thoroughly. Great job on the cover too. I found what I am doing over winter break...trying to learn this

  • really, unbelievably, absolutely amazing. i cried hard. Elliott is smiling down on you in appreciation for the effort you put into this. you are amazing. thank you so much for making this.

  • Thanks,I appreciate your positive comments.

  • WOW. Unbelievable, man. It sounds awesome as it is, and I can only imagine how much better in stereo. One of the best covers I've heard in my life. Just started learning how to play the guitar and I'm just overwhelmed watching this; lots of respect!

  • Thanks very much for your positive comments.

  • With all those tracks you should do a remix to stereo, it would sound so much better. Not to imply that it sounds bad as is.

  • I did do a stereo mix initially and tried posting it using the FLV method that worked previously but unfortunately that method no longer works so I re-posted in mono...I really wish youtube hadn't put a stop to that method, music sounded much better that way.

  • One of my Elliott's favorite songs, your rendition is perfect.

Please accept my deepest respect and appreciation. Can I ask if you'll try to make a cover of his "Waltz #1"? I love this song very much and it would be great to listen to you playing it.

  • Thanks again,I'll keep your request in mind.

  • You're a big music nerd. It sounds lovely in mono. Nicely done, sir.

  • Thanks for your positive comments.I actually don't consider myself smart enough to be a nerd but I do wish that youtube would do a better job converting the audio on uploads.

  • you've done an amazing cover.

    simply amazing

  • Thanks for your positive comments and for subscribing.

  • did you layer Smith's voice on top of yours? You sound astonishingly alike. A true marvel how you are able to sound like so many diff artists and a lovely job!

  • Thanks for your positive comments...nothing sampled from the original recording here(or on any of the others),for better or worse it's all played and sung by me.

  • Once again absolutly top notch... what year and model is that Guild? That's the 12 string of 12 strings.

  • Thanks again...the guitar is a model JF30,not sure what year but I bought it new between 10 and 15 years ago...I actually got it at a greatly reduced cost because it had a very noticeable crack in the finish.

  • So precise! this is really wonderful!

  • beautiful. more elliott smith covers, please!

  • where can I get my hands on the tabs for this? it's a slightly different version than what I have...

  • Sounds absolutely beautiful. I must say you have some gigantic hands as well.

  • Thanks for your positive comments...I think this is one of those instances where size does matter.

  • This is just absolutely fantastic!

Hope you'll be doing "Junk bond trader" :)

  • Thanks for your positive comments,I'll keep your request in mind.

  • yeah

junk bond trader would be awesome

  • you recorded this in another locality than the Drake songs?

  • No,it looks a bit different because it's the only one I filmed in the day,the sunlight changes the look of the room a bit.

  • you should do i didn't understand at some point (the album version)

  • generally when i find someone that does a good cover, they also have amazing original tunes... where are yours? they must be hiding somewhere!

  • Thanks for your positive comments and for subscribing...I have been asked by quite a few people so far about posting something original,I hope to at some point but nothing imminent, for now I'm having fun just posting these covers.

  • i love the finger picking!

you did an awesome job on this...i am truely amazed!

  • absolutely a flawless cover.

judging by the way you practiced so you had every single note of the song perfect, you love elliott smith as much as I do =)

I've been aspiring to play this for a while now, but do you know someone who has a video lesson or good tabs that could help me?

  • Thanks for all of your positive comments and for subscribing...unfortunately I don't have any tabs for this,I pretty much just figured it out by ear but I know there are some other good versions out there on youtube, perhaps one of those might also be helpful for the purposes of learning the song...good luck with it.

  • 5\5

  • Wow, that's really amazing. Great cover!

  • This is hands down the best job I've seen/heard covering a song. I haven't checked out your profile yet, but I certainly hope you are using your abilities to write songs as well. Ironically enough, I just started working with a female musician here in Portland that was one of Elliott's friends. We're going to try to collaborate on music.

    Again, well done man.

  • Thanks very much for your positive comments...nothing original posted yet but perhaps at some point down the line.

  • It sounds good. However it sounds like you're using Melodine or some vocal processor that is making your voice lose a little quality. (especially in the higher harmonies)

Sounds good either way (I could be mistaken). I enjoyed it.

  • Thanks for your positive comments and for subscribing.

  • can you desrcibe the tremolo picking pattern a little? is it just PIM PIM repeated?

  • That's correct.

  • Really well done. It's great to see such an authentic recreation.

  • Thanks,I appreciate your positive comments.

  • did you do this on a 12 string? i heard that ES oringinally recorded thsi with a 12 string but it only had the 6 high strings left.

  • There are several guitars layered on this recording and yes,the one you see me playing here is a 12 string minus the lower octave doubles.

  • Unbelievable. Amazing.

  • Wow what a faithful interpretation/recreation of this amazing song, bravo man, hats off most definately! Keep it up!

  • I can't believe what i'm hearing !? It's just perfect men... You really make me want to buy a 12 cords ! hatts off, really...

  • Thanks for your positive comments.

  • mica ho capito come si fa..

  • Hey, very excellent, very impressed! Have you written some of your own music? I would love to hear some of your Original stuff if you have any.

  • Thanks for your positive comments and for subscribing...at some point I may post something original but nothing planned at the moment...

  • this is sooo incredible...my fav es song!! you are amazing man

  • Hey,thanks very much for all your positive comments.

  • Very nicely done. And thanks for posting the proper tuning, because it was confusing me for awhile.

I know you're all about layering and making it sound identical to a CD, but have you ever thought about making a one-take video? The videos I made were all one-takes, so I'm just curious as to how you'd approach it...

  • Thanks for your positive comments...actually 6 of my 20 vids so far are just 1 guitar and vocal with no other layering but I think you might be referring to how I would approach this one in particular...I would say similar to how he played it live, mostly with this arrangement only in standard tuning and down a half step.

  • Wow - this is awesome. Your attention to detail is very impressive. Harmonies sound great. You even managed a similar vocal effect to the one he used (as well as the doubling). What is that? A bit of phaser? Really impressed - gonna go check your others out.....

  • Thanks for your positive comments...interesting you should mention that "phaser" effect on the vocal,I noticed that too although I actually didn't put any effect on there,I think it's a by product of the close doubling and the particular intervals being sung...these are the sort of interesting details of the original recordings that make themselves known as I attempt these "close" covers and why they're fun to do.

  • Fan-tas-ti-co.

I am addicted to your channel;) Please don't stop, keep Elliot's songs coming!

  • Hey,thanks again for all your positive comments.

  • fan-freaking-tastic.

  • Hey,thanks for your positive comments and for subscribing.

  • excellent, as always. have you written/recorded any of your own tunes? i'm just curious. you've got some true talent, friend.

  • Thanks again for your positive comments...a few people have asked about possibly posting something original, not at the moment but perhaps at sometime in the future.

  • Yesterday, yesterday...

  • wow

    very good

  • Thanks for your positive comments.

  • Purely excellent version of my favorite Elliot

Smith song. Brilliant guitar playing! 5*

What kind of guitar are you picking here? *Amy

  • Thanks again Amy...I'm playing a Guild jumbo 12 string, but as I mentioned in the info section I took off all the doubles to get the Nashville tuning thing happening, then the whole thing tuned down a step,so DGCFAD

  • Excellent as always Rich. Thanks for explaining about the layering. I love how you pulled this off--the effortless sliding, hammering bits meld perfectly. It's absolutely a one of a kind sound that Elliott created, and you captured every nuance! Awesome!

Say Rich, how did you set up your cam on this one? It gives the option for high or standard quality. 16X9 ratio?

  • Thanks again for your positive comments...no,as with all my previous posts I recorded it in 4:3,youtube appears to have stretched it out which is I guess why my face appears shorter and fatter than usual...but at least there is that watch in high quality option you mentioned,if you click that it doesn't seem to look any better but it does sound better,a bit crisper I think...I've seen this option on a bunch of vids but this is the first time on one of mine, perhaps a new policy with youtube

  • It's amazing to watch your videos. You do amazing jobs on beautiful songs.

  • Thanks very much for your positive comments.

  • I think the layering came out great. By the way, was finally able to nail "Road" - very difficult trying to get that one down just by ear.

You do very well with the ES covers - when ya gonna stick some originals up there, then? I'd say "don't be shy." except for the fact that I haven't gotten past my "stage fright" enough to be able to play something all the way through flawlessly on film... ahh well.

    ~Jess

  • Thanks again Jess for your positive comments...people have been asking me more and more lately to post something original,I'm not a lyricist but I really should set aside some time to write something I could post, even if it's just instrumental...congrats on learning Road,I know from experience it's not an easy one.

  • lol - seems as if we suffer the same complex. I have music without words, and lyrics (poetry) without music. You think it would be easy to combine the two?? Best of luck on that. If you think you can set some music to my poetry, send me a PM - would be honoured to see what you could come up with.

  • You are so good everytime!

Would you do a cover of an Elliot Smith or Nick Drake song where you give your interpritation of it, rather than just doing an amazing cover, I would love to see that!

  • Thanks again for your positive comments...yeah,so far only my cover of Parasite has been my own arrangement but I plan on slipping in some more where I do my own take on some of these songs.

  • Ahh cool I've definetly heard your arrangement of Parasite since I've seen all your videos, but I will be sure to check it out again :D

    Thanks

  • cool and very classy

  • Thanks,I appreciate your comments.

  • hmm i like it, but i'd like to see you do this stuff without any fancy studio equipment or backing-vocals and -instruments...then i would be more impressed i think

  • Thanks for your comments...actually I like that approach as well,6 of my 20 posts so far are just 1 guitar and vocal, but the most fun I get out of doing these is to pick out a song that I feel has a great arrangement and then to try and play and sing all the parts and hear it all come together in my studio...plus,I think the vast majority of covers on youtube are just 1 instrument and voice so this approach adds a little variety...but I realize it's not to everyones taste.

  • that was amazing

  • Thanks for your positive comments and for subscribing.

  • wow.

  • Thanks.

  • I am so glad you actually did a cover of this!!! Thank you so much.

  • Thanks very much for your postive comments.

  • Simply beautiful!

    Right into my favorites folder.

I agree with the last comment, would love to hear "Color Bars" or even "Pretty (Ugly Before)"

  • Thanks again,I'll definitely consider those songs.

  • That was lovely! I'd be great to hear your version of 'Colour Bars'. I'm sure you could layer that to perfection.

  • Thanks...Colour Bars is also a great one,I'll keep it in consideration.

  • Always quality delivering! Great cover.

  • Thanks very much for the positive feedback.

  • ahhhhhh nothing better than wakeing up to a good early morning post! Thanks plectrum34! twas amazing!

  • Thanks again Josh for your positive comments.

  • don't worry about it only being in mono - it's still sounds great! apart from the spot-on harmonies, my favourite bit is your pinky finger on your right hand... it looks so left out!.... maybe you should attach a small tambourine to it?... you know, give it something to do! 5 stars.

  • Thanks alot for your positive comments, glad it still sounds ok...yeah,that pinky is rather odd looking, dangling out there as it is...one person commented that it made my right hand look like a strange creature.

  • you are freaking insane. KEEP GOING! i love this.

  • Thanks,I appreciate the encouragement.
