straight cello shredding...love it! but the comments on the orkestar...they seem like tired...or annoyed...something. I'd have to see the other performances lol
Compared to the Rostropovich performance, this one really affected me emotionally. It's probably because Slava's doesn't have very good audio. But David Pia is surely amazing.
The orchestra and conductor are both so weak it is hard to believe this performance came from the Finals. It sounds like a failed rehearsal. Pia is to be commended for an incredible performance under such adverse circumstances.
Good performance, but not a good interpretation. He's playing some sad music instead of playing Shostakovich. Listen to Schiff, Rostropovich, Maisky, now these guys mean business.
"his technic is actually pretty good a bit more flexibility in his right hand"
Wow, you are an idiot. His technique is "pretty good"? You must be a completely new to the music world if you think this is "pretty good". His technique is excellent and far better than 99% of cellists I've ever heard in my life, excluding the greats obviously
I don't care what BS bio you just made up about yourself, if you think his technique is just "pretty good" then you don't know what you're talking about. Interpretation is one thing, but not recognizing the excellency of Pia's technical abilities is just ignorant
so this is livinlife409 again..lol..ive listened to this video alot...and actually he needs a lil practice///but to everybody else's ear//spectacular!!!! but he needs to work on intonation a bit...still magnificent
well ....mr. biggofwi, i wrote 'ive listened to this video a lot'...so i was kinda making the statement clear that a lot of people dont alot...my first time watching it was like obsessive...it is amazing, but if u study it then you'll see the mess-ups../not that it isn't '''''spectacuar'''' [L]-->jus so YOU know, so no im not the only one 2 hear problems in tone...ha...his tone was good actually i said his intonation was off,,and his bowing's,,tone good,,.SO RE-WORD YA QUESTION>..love this video
You know when they do concerto competitions most of them tune to Hz 444 or even higher instead of 440 (A4) right? He doesn't have to work on his intonation. But, I think he is a bit too aggressive. But that's just my opinion.
u can do it..jus dnt beathe wen u do it...people tend to take time to almost breathe in summin like that..it'll help,,,,lol,,,,but dnt forget to breathe again.
Very few people in the audience. It is embarrassing to have this low attendance in the finals of one of the most prestigious cello competitions in the world!! Was attendance always this low at the Tchaikovsky Cello competition finals!!???
The orchestra is terrible - not together at all, woodwind are totally out of tune and not articulate. The cellist probably suffers because of this but still it's not a great performance. And Han-na chang is a totally different cellist to this anyway. I think even if he was the only one in the final they wouldn't award a first prize. That happened to a friend of mine who came second where the first prize wasn't awarded that year.
I was listening all Tchaikovsky competition of cello group. And its no question who was the best-David Pia.And he won 6 prize but not 1st one, just because he was the only one in the final who didnt have anybody from competition mafia in the back stage...And i agree with Micha Haran, that David Pia is fantastic cellist.
You are right about the competition mafia. Far too many jury has vested interest. In any case, gone are the days that competition winners are guaranteed of career success - the CD industry is dead already.......
OBVIOUSLY Han-Na Chang is far above this guy but this is a very nice performance. Of course that is just my opinion. Believe what u want to think but for me this was sublime.
the whole performance is almost less mediocre... guys think what you want, but everyone who plays the cello sees that this cellist has nothing to do with a final of Tchaikovsky competition!!!!!!
Idk why,but i searched tchaikovsky conpetition. There are 3 places not six.David Pia have no information of him.

@TheCellomagic The sound on this entire video is terrible and tinny (listen to the timpani). I wouldn't blame the cellist for that

seeing everything together it is a great performance...
but there are many little details i wouldn't play like this!!
in 9:58 he's playing it rediculusly aggressive, don't do that...
and all the pizzicati are too hard not sweet, as schostacovich wanted them...
but his technic is actually pretty good a bit more flexebility in his right hand, but thats all!!
and I'm interested, too, if he won the competition^^
HeiligerPavianarsch 2 years ago
yea cus obviously you're interpretation is far more greater than any other in the world right?
gagagoogoo 2 years ago
The other (Russian) guy won. Pia a Swiss ain't he?
Remember that awarding decisions ain't solely dependent on competitors' performance in the Tchaikovsky competition these days [frowning darkly].
Well, hope this was helpful ...
Cheers :-)

I'm sorry, but for your information, I've played cello almost my entire live, and probably 99% of the cellists would tell you, you're talking shit.
I never said, his technique is bad, you said it yourself.
I think he's a great cellist, i really do, even if some people think different...
I'm sorry that hes not my kind of type in interpretation!!
I have heard this peace live with rostropovich, bohorquez and some others!!
and rostro plays it like it should be, cause he practiced it with schosta

the soloist did a pretty good job
a few wrong notes, and a couple out of tune notes, but overall it was pretty good
the orchestra ruined it for me though
the orchestra didn't share the same energy as the soloist, probably because they have to play so many times with different people
and it also seemed like the orchestra would be a tad slower than the soloist
also, i thought the timpani was too loud
shostakovich wanted a strong timpani, but i think that was too loud
