  • Idk why,but i searched tchaikovsky conpetition. There are 3 places not six.David Pia have no information of him.

  • I think thats the dress rehearsal, no?

  • straight cello shredding...love it! but the comments on the orkestar...they seem like tired...or annoyed...something. I'd have to see the other performances lol

  • @scenefaith They probably had to play this for many other participants.....I'd be tired playing the same concerto how ever many times a day

  • really impressive but i have to be honest 4:40 to around 5:20 sounds like a little kid throwing a tantrum because he cant play cello. just saying

  • is this orchestra serious...?

  • Terrible sound!!!!!!!!!!! So aggressive!!! Man,you have no idea about Shostakovich music! How did he passed to the final???????

  • @TheCellomagic The sound on this entire video is terrible and tinny (listen to the timpani). I wouldn't blame the cellist for that

  • Orchestra is totally pizdaits!!!

    )))

  • wtf......

    10/10 x

  • This guy knows how to kick some angry late-composed butt.

  • Compared to the Rostropovich performance, this one really affected me emotionally. It's probably because Slava's doesn't have very good audio. But David Pia is surely amazing.

  • The orchestra and conductor are both so weak it is hard to believe this performance came from the Finals. It sounds like a failed rehearsal. Pia is to be commended for an incredible performance under such adverse circumstances.

  • a kto etot dizhlob?mog bi i stoia dirizhirovati dlia prilichia.

  • I like this! (and that's coming from an actual cellist). but LOL@ stupid commentators... imposters, etc.

  • .. the orchestra is atrocious..!

  • Good performance, but not a good interpretation. He's playing some sad music instead of playing Shostakovich. Listen to Schiff, Rostropovich, Maisky, now these guys mean business.

  • The conductor does not risk a heart attack !

  • @Ballot78 Rofl, your right, the least the man can do is stand up.

  • i remember david when was child in my class at chigiana di siena with antonio meneses, good david!

  • Fabulous player!

  • seeing everything together it is a great performance...

but there are many little details i wouldn't play like this!!

in 9:58 he's playing it rediculusly aggressive, don't do that...

and all the pizzicati are too hard not sweet, as schostacovich wanted them...

but his technic is actually pretty good a bit more flexebility in his right hand, but thats all!!

and I'm interested, too, if he won the competition^^

  • yea cus obviously you're interpretation is far more greater than any other in the world right?

  • The other (Russian) guy won. Pia a Swiss ain't he?

Remember that awarding decisions ain't solely dependent on competitors' performance in the Tchaikovsky competition these days [frowning darkly].

Well, hope this was helpful ...

    Cheers :-)

  • One presumes when you were in the finals of the Tchaik competition, that you played significantly differently

  • "his technic is actually pretty good a bit more flexibility in his right hand"

Wow, you are an idiot. His technique is "pretty good"? You must be a completely new to the music world if you think this is "pretty good". His technique is excellent and far better than 99% of cellists I've ever heard in my life, excluding the greats obviously

  • I'm sorry, but for your information, I've played cello almost my entire live, and probably 99% of the cellists would tell you, you're talking shit.

I never said, his technique is bad, you said it yourself.

I think he's a great cellist, i really do, even if some people think different...

I'm sorry that hes not my kind of type in interpretation!!

I have heard this peace live with rostropovich, bohorquez and some others!!

and rostro plays it like it should be, cause he practiced it with schosta

    cu

  • I don't care what BS bio you just made up about yourself, if you think his technique is just "pretty good" then you don't know what you're talking about. Interpretation is one thing, but not recognizing the excellency of Pia's technical abilities is just ignorant

  • No one calls Rostropovich 'Rostro'; if you want a shortened version, it's 'Slava'

  • @Lezzaz

    why slava??

its rostro, or popovich (at least of what i know)

but i dont wanna argue about that, if thats ok^^

    bye

  • did he win?

  • so this is livinlife409 again..lol..ive listened to this video alot...and actually he needs a lil practice///but to everybody else's ear//spectacular!!!! but he needs to work on intonation a bit...still magnificent

  • So only you have the ability to hear problems in tone? Considering you said that to everyone else he sounds spectacuar

  • well ....mr. biggofwi, i wrote 'ive listened to this video a lot'...so i was kinda making the statement clear that a lot of people dont alot...my first time watching it was like obsessive...it is amazing, but if u study it then you'll see the mess-ups../not that it isn't '''''spectacuar'''' [L]-->jus so YOU know, so no im not the only one 2 hear problems in tone...ha...his tone was good actually i said his intonation was off,,and his bowing's,,tone good,,.SO RE-WORD YA QUESTION>..love this video

  • Well he plays cello better than I can so using myself as a base. I think that you should Re-word your original statement. It is misleading

  • HA OKAY THEN...FOR U..

  • You know when they do concerto competitions most of them tune to Hz 444 or even higher instead of 440 (A4) right? He doesn't have to work on his intonation. But, I think he is a bit too aggressive. But that's just my opinion.

  • que gran cellista

  • Spectacular playing! Best of luck!!

  • this is my favorite rendition of the 3&4th movement

  • o myyyyyyyyy god! this dude is my hero...truly blessed w/ the gift....ya got it

  • marry me?

  • Sorry--the applause indicates that this is obviously a performance---perhaps an early round?

The conductor is absolutely catatonic--imagine trying to make music with this guy--straight out of the KGB.

  • I assume that this is a rehearsal, not a public performance--right??

  • this was freaking great! it sounded evil lol

  • the players in the background look so utterly bored. haha.

  • this was awesome

i play the cello and its always been an aim ive had to learn to play this cadenza by the time i die, which wont happen coz its soooooo hard XD

  • u can do it..jus dnt beathe wen u do it...people tend to take time to almost breathe in summin like that..it'll help,,,,lol,,,,but dnt forget to breathe again.

  • I've been practicing this concerto for the entire july, still not good at all !

  • the dude who was judging was kind of creepy. he was all up on his grill and all staring at him. oh i play the cello too. ;]

  • I think you mean the conductor??

  • Indeed. xD

  • But, this Swiss cellist is quite good.

  • This competition is a a mere shadow of what it once was, which is sad. It was the very top. But its decline is reason for discussion.

  • Bravissimo

  • The players of the orchestra are all obviously bored with their job

  • haha, looks like it..

  • bit too academic playing, but fine

  • So...is this Tchaikovsky or Shostakovich?

  • Tchaikovsky competiton, and he plays: Shostakovich cello concerto.

  • Very few people in the audience. It is embarrassing to have this low attendance in the finals of one of the most prestigious cello competitions in the world!! Was attendance always this low at the Tchaikovsky Cello competition finals!!???

  • This video is just unbelievable!

  • Very good!Congratulations...

  • Personally, he did Ok, not perfect but considerably well.

I just wonder, How many of you is is able to performe this concercerto as he did?

For sure, none of you, so you should just watch and learn.

  • Exactly. Admiration and Adoration.

  • Good point, however, you don't need to be able to do something to be able to criticize it :D

  • The orchestra is terrible - not together at all, woodwind are totally out of tune and not articulate. The cellist probably suffers because of this but still it's not a great performance. And Han-na chang is a totally different cellist to this anyway. I think even if he was the only one in the final they wouldn't award a first prize. That happened to a friend of mine who came second where the first prize wasn't awarded that year.

  • stop comparing david pia with han-na chang. they are both great cellists but chang is a pro.

  • oh come on, as if david pia wasn't as much of a pro as han-na chang.

  • I was listening all Tchaikovsky competition of cello group. And its no question who was the best-David Pia.And he won 6 prize but not 1st one, just because he was the only one in the final who didnt have anybody from competition mafia in the back stage...And i agree with Micha Haran, that David Pia is fantastic cellist.

  • You are right about the competition mafia. Far too many jury has vested interest. In any case, gone are the days that competition winners are guaranteed of career success - the CD industry is dead already.......

  • David Pia is a fantastic cellist!

  • the soloist did a pretty good job

a few wrong notes, and a couple out of tune notes, but overall it was pretty good

the orchestra ruined it for me though

the orchestra didn't share the same energy as the soloist, probably because they have to play so many times with different people

and it also seemed like the orchestra would be a tad slower than the soloist

also, i thought the timpani was too loud

shostakovich wanted a strong timpani, but i think that was too loud

  • OBVIOUSLY Han-Na Chang is far above this guy but this is a very nice performance. Of course that is just my opinion. Believe what u want to think but for me this was sublime.

  • poor performance?! flaws? vibrato??? who the fuck are you people? why werent you in it then?- this guy is fantastic come on!

  • His appearance makes up for any flaws there may be! ;) Well done

  • look at han na chang's interpretation.. 100 times better, more exciting, better..

  • yep!indeed!!!

  • very nice! Would like to see more vids of this guy.

  • poor performance why has he reached the final???

  • how could you say that was a poor performance...you obviously don't understand music

  • Shostakovich Concerto No.1 is one of the strong music.....good job!

  • Shostakovitch sure made some strange music.

  • good

  • that was awesome.

  • can any o u speak english? this guys vibrato is mediocre

  • the whole performance is almost less mediocre... guys think what you want, but everyone who plays the cello sees that this cellist has nothing to do with a final of Tchaikovsky competition!!!!!!

  • even its a damn hard passage at 5:40... its just horrible!!

  • thats not a hard passage. the double stops before that are the hardest.

  • No one cares about the Tchaikovsky competition anymore because the final rounds are starting to sound like THIS.

  • Yes.Second round was mush better.

  • His interpretation of Russian music is amazing!

But he was MUCH better on the second round in my opinion.

  • He's amazing!!!!

  • please put more videos on of the cello final!! thanks for posting!

  • verry good i want to play like him XD

  • No,he won a 6price :((

  • A friend of my! István Várdai, won the 3th, price, I am so glad becausehe is a friend of my :)

  • did he won?

  • can u tell me where is he from and how old is he ?

  • it is amazing!!!!!

    congratulation David:)
