I didn't know the song existed at all until I heard the Pickettywitch version a couple of years ago. It sounded so much like "Here comes that rainy day feeling again." that I looked up who wrote both. Turns out Tony Macaulay was a co-writer on both. No surprise that the Fortunes also had a version of this. Not bad.
The Fortunes version was recorded in 1969. It was originally part of an LP recorded by the 3 original Fortunes vocalists (Rod Allen, Barry Pritchard, and Glen Dale, who left in 1966). The three of them recorded the LP for Coca Cola and 2,000 copies were pressed and given out to distributors. Pickettywitch recorded the song in 1970 and had a U.K. hit which prompted the Fortunes record company U.A. to release their version in the U.S. and in Canada. It did better than Picketty in both countries.
@K3KCT Yes, that's right, I put a new pic with the down beat of each measure. I'm the only one I know of who syncs the pics with the music. If I can't find enough pics I'll do it every other measure, but found plenty for these guys. Most people are used to pics flashing this quickly. Sorry if it has a negative effect on you. Never heard of Pickettywitch, so I'll check out their version.
@MrTrashcan1 Hi, buddy; I appreciate your reply and you've done a nice-job of syncing - good-timing. I just have a thing about modern pop video producers doing this; when you're unable to see the artiste properly cos it's being frantically cut-cut-cut to the next frame etc. Grrr..
'Down-beat', 'measure'?... You're a musician, aren't you?
'K3KCT' - the KCT bit is my initials. I'm not a broadcaster and I prefer eggs :)
'Pickettywitch' had a couple of hits in the 70s - the girl-singer had a really great voice and was terrifically good-looking. I did a search for her and came up with a clip - again from the 70s - of her singing in a 'Eurovision Song Contest' show.
If you do a search on youtube for 'Eurovision 1976 UK National Final Song - 02' you should find it. Now, I happened to read-through some of the comments and just look at the comment offered by the dude called 'bossrat'.. Hmmm..
@K3KCT Just watched/listened to the Pickettywitch version. Girl is cute, but don't like it as much. Chords are wrong (or just different) in the stanza/bridge and I prefer what the Fortunes used.
I took piano and french horn when I was young and studied music theory. I had talent, but that only goes so far, and I was too lazy to practice to the point of competence. Nevertheless both classical and pop have been a large part of my life ever since.
@MrTrashcan1 Ha! The plot thickens! I just did a wikipedia search for the Fortunes and it appears they only released this song in the US - AND - it adds; "competing with the original version by Pickettywitch"... I was about to say that I don't really remember the Fortunes version - that's why I don't.. I'm from the UK. I was also about to say that we tend to favour the version we first heard, so, being familiar only with the P'witch version I must therefore claim this as far superior!
Mr T!, you've done it again. This is one of my all-time favorite singles. I still can't believe that this song, with its catchy meoldy and lyrics that we can all relate to, did not make it into the Top 40.
This was released on the World Pacific label, an affiliate of UA.

Hey man, we got 'Pickettywitch' doin this on another clip but,..
You know what's 'uncomfortable' about this version? The pics are way-too-quick; every Bar, almost every beat - totally confusing, I loose interest.
Shoot - I almost flicked back to Pickettywitch...
