  • Both peerless.

  • Dionne LOOKS like Rihanna on this vid

  • Absolute DIVAS going hard. We love you.

  • This is the key note (F sharp key) Dionne should've sang in originally for this song.

  • Somebody must provide a HD version of this video for culture's sake.

  • OMG... TWO QUEENS SINGING TOGETHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOVE THEM BOTH, EACH ONE HAS ITS OWN STYLE BUT STILL TOP BLACK SINGER... GREAT

  • Sorry bu the quality of this video is not sooo god like as singers !

  • dionne voice it well ... aretha gave is a soulful verse...

    u go dionne...

    rob

  • yes.. but aretha sang it in the same year. 1967..

    the writer wanted them both

  • I've always loved both versions of this song. But this live version serves neither singer well.

  • @pnyc1969 Well said. It was a nice idea to get both Dion and Aretha together for this great song but it just didn't work.

  • gawd this is good....one of the very few songs where I like two versions equally

  • God is so good. Right now I'm in the beautiful city of Bangkok enjoying life.

  • @meegikwang your in bangkok right now? God isnt that fuckin good right now then for you is he? how did you piss him off?

  • Both of these divas are talented. I love both versions of this song! However Dionne snag it; but Aretha SANG IT!

  • Blue devils play this........plus i like this.....

  • The both are the queen of soul, they are the both QUEEn... everyone has has her own style, the bouth are THE QUEEN

  • @sabatino77 yeah, long live the bouth! wher can i find the bouths version of this track?

  • Excelente !!!! Unas voces increibles

  • It's like alternating between super premium decadent ice creams! Each one is their own unique symphony of rhythm and flavors that complement each other but are equally impressive alone!

  • NOSSA QUE FENOMENOS

  • For me this is Aretha's song, didn't even know Dionne sang it.

  • @theoneandonly2503

but it was sung by dionne first and actually written for her too

  • yes.

  • To me they were the best of their time.

  • TRULY TWO OF THE BEST. YESTERDAY. TODAY. TOMORROW.

  • Thank you for this post

  • ARETHA!!!!!!!!!!!HANDS DOWN!!!!!!!!!I LOVE DIONNE BUT AREATHA IS BONE CHILLING GREAT!!!!!

  • whoa two icons

  • I love their voices... Singers of the past have unique voices... One's voice is distinct from another's. You can easily distinguish. Unlike now, the voices sound apparently alike.

  • @hibernate02 very well put

  • I love their voices... Singers of the past have really distinct voices... You can easily tell who is singer on air... Unlike now... Voices are much alike... They sound alike...

  • too much awesome on one stage

  • Awesome.

  • How special is this? WOW!! <3

  • No puedo creer que exista esto!!! Dionne y Aretha cantando esta super canción!!! Wooooowwww

  • Dionne took more control on this song because this was her signature song and Aretha sang it a year after Dionne did. But it is stupid to compare them. They are two different singers that simply sang the same song. That's all. Aretha is the Queen of Soul, so that speaks for itself.

  • thequeenaretha is really a piece of work. all trash talk, no class.

  • What year was this? Look like 1982.

  • Dionn'e arrangement at the begining and end. The rest is Aretha's arrangement.

  • Dionne sounds better on it this is HER music. A signature song.

Is she better than Aretha at all? No way.

Is Aretha better than Dionne at all? No way.

Two great singers who sing with different voices in different tones and scales.

    Comparisons are ridiculous.

    Period.

  • @caravaggio31 Songs belong to their composers but Aretha had a big hit with it too.

  • @caravaggio31 The song was written FOR Dionne after all. Aretha is great, untouchable even, but in songs written for her. Say a little prayer needs the smooth light butterfly tones of Dionne. And still Dionne did not take over the song, but let Aretha have her part.

  • Two stylistically different singers who come from the same background: Gospel.

I really feel like there is mutual respect in the way neither tries to outsing the other but does great justice to beautiful song and melody.

  • Dionne seems like the classier lady/singer While Aretha seems more like the motherly/singer both being great (i know Dionne is older but still) and their voices/styles are so different i dont think its fair to say one is better than the other its just which style you like better

  • aretha held back cuz she knows its REALLY dionnes song! but they both are soulful divas

  • @privatedancer06 It's Burt Bachrach's song, both of these ladies sung it. And Aretha's version is so much better, in my opinion.

  • They both look so beautiful here. What a special combination!

  • amazing....<3

  • Aretha's nuanced vocals ae very nice here. She shows her virtuosity in this duet, clearly matching her approach to the song with her duet partner. Dionne's voice here is sublime.

  • Two magnificent singers singing a magnificent song

  • Dionne is great, but Aretha's musicianship is unmatched. I do like Dionne's phrasing here, though.

  • Dionne looks incredible here and sounds great to boot, with liberal use of that extraordinary mixed voice of hers. And Aretha is demonstrating a level of nuance and subtletly that one doesn't normally associate with her. Quite a treat. This duet feels very loose, barely rehearsed, yet they never seem to be competition. They share the stage well. Great fun.

  • Dionnes more alert in this performance and overshadows Aretha in parts. Her voice also bares a strong connection to the musical arrangement....

  • @shootforthemoon89 I don't think so, Aretha is just laid back but she is just as alert.

  • IT`S FUNNY HOW OFTEN ARETHA TAKES ALL THE CREDIT AND THIS PROVE WHO IS DIONNE WARWICK JUST AS HER LEVEL EVEN BETTER THAN ARETHA ON THIS...

  • @fireandrain22 Dionne is not better than Aretha, case closed!

  • @TheQueenAretha dionne is not better, just different, aretha is not better than Dionne.

  • @TheQueenAretha

    Dionne sounded better here

  • @shootforthemoon89 To hell she did not.

  • Comment removed

  • @shootforthemoon89 What does that have to do with anything, Dionne is do anything more than what Aretha is doing.

  • @fireandrain22 I agree with you! Dionne's on point here!

  • love the outfits!

  • You know it's amazing that each one of these ladies singing together, you can still hear when they sing individually, their own mark on the song.

  • I always love to see Dionne sing such grace a true lady she always on point . She never sacrafices a note for the sake of screaming and hollering on the stage. She is able to give you the beauty in her voice and can give you volume when NEEDED as well not just for the sake of being loud. A true talent and one of the best singers of all times my personal favorite.

  • @npthomas80 ....well said!!! She doesn't run up and down the scale screaming and yelling! I hate when Christina Aguilerra does it! I know I spelled her name wrong and I only mentioned her because she's a prime example along with a lot of others that I could name... Anyway Dionne keeps it simple and classy!

  • Classic, 2 divas on one stage is awesome!!! Praise God for the gift of these two beautiful woman who brought music to lift us from the worldly pressures and challenges life throws us!!!

  • Seen pics aretha and Dionne doing this but never heard it before. Quality of the clip not good. Love both ladies love both versions of the song. If only they could have put them together when they were both at Arista I believe they are friends and extended family.

  • Claaaaaasssy ladies with beautiful voices!

  • It's nice to see two legends and friends sing together and not try to upstage each other!!..BRAVO!

  • shouldn't we celebrate these 2 true legends instead of......

  • Right on loniaz. They both respect each other's music, why can't we? I've been a loyal subject to Queen Re for years, but Dionne is amazing. period! After I saw Dionne live @ the Chicago Theatre in the 80s I have bowed everytime I here her name. Never heard one of her records or TV appearances that matched Dionne in person.

  • Dionne Does not take a back seat to any other legend. She very underrated. I love Dionne she is my favorite in my book. A very great duet though by very true talented legends.

  • Don't forget DEE DEE and CISSY

  • Dione Voice's here sounds much more better

  • Thats a lie!

  • aretha was crying....lol.......

if she's so called queen you make it out to be... you dont need to go rampant on youtube telling me off...lol

  • Comment removed

  • i shouldnt even bother with you.... you degrade so many singers to pomote aretha..... if she's the queen then she doesnt need to be hyped..... even after she got snubbed by beyonce and cried to whomever would listen.

you just hate all the divas and get in fights over youtube with all fans

  • I ain't the one that is hyping the hell out of Whitney. Putting her name on shit that ain't even about her. And Aretha was not crying about what Bey said. Aretha was asked a question about it and she said what she felt about it. Who is Beyonce compared to Aretha Franklin. I don't hate none of the Divas. I don't care for Patti and Mariah but that is it. I have deep respect for the others.

  • where do i hype whitney.... tell me........ i only talk about whitney in comparison videos and i never say she's better then a certain artist like you do about aretha. your the one that goes on any video aretha is on and start fights

  • You bring up Whitney into videos where you and her have no business being in. I don't start fight about Aretha. Someone else does, i am the one that ends them.

  • dionne singing circles around aretha, classic

  • Please in your dream. Aretha isn't even trying and she her voice is standing out. If Aretha really cared about this performance she would have vocally murdered Dionne.

  • how does her voice stand out here.... please tell me........ aretha looked nervous the entire song........ if they both belted, you would barely hear aretha over dionne

  • Aretha isn't even even trying that hard and her voice is projecting more volume than Dionne. Aretha doesn;t look nervous at all. That is BULLSHIT. You is clear to me that Aretha doesn't even give a damn about this performance. She is laid back, she knows she could easily murder Dionne vocally. If Aretha had really let loose she would have drowned Dionne's ass out. Dionne doesn't have the power. Dionne's voice is weak. Aretha's voice is natural more robust while Dionne has a frail tone.

  • lol.... how is her voice projecting more then dionne LOL...... i dont know about the past but during this duet in the 80's, dionne was much voice.... her who's zoomin who performance was better then aretha's

  • Aretha has alway had a more fuller tone and Aretha voice naturally has more volume. Dionne don't have a full voice like Aretha. And are you kidding? Aretha sung Who's Zoomin Who better live than she even did on record. I listen to Dionne and her version has nothing on Aretha's. Aretha sung Who's Zoomin Who farrrrr better than what Dionne was attempting to do. You need to check your ears and go watch Aretha's live version of that song.

  • lol... aretha had already lossed much of her power by the 80's anyways... look to the right with dionne singing with luther...that was 1989.... and her voice was just as great even from years of chain smoking

  • Aretha had lost a good amount of her range, not her power. She still possessed alot of power and belted out strong power notes. The difference between Aretha and Dionne is that Aretha was able to adapt. She still has more voice than Dionne has. Which has always been the case when comparing the two. Aretha is a powerhouse. Dionne is more of a lightweight.

  • how does aretha adapt.... lol......... dionne delved into so many more genres... and as a voice is so much more versatile..... how is dionne a lightweight? you wouldnt be able to hear aretha over dionne.

    XoGmNQ95lOw

that performance in the early 80's would pwn anything aretha could do in term sof power

  • Aretha has been through many voice changes. Unlike most she is able to adapt. Even with her range not being what i was she can still give you the same amount of passion that she alway gave. Dionne is a good singer but her voice is not at all as versatile as Aretha. Aretha is a better interpreter and that give her the gift of crossing over into any genre of music. Aretha has to be one of the most versatile singer of all time. Dionne not so much. Aretha easily overpower Dionne.

  • Dionne doesn't possess Aretha's power. Aretha voice was like a hurricane of power. Dionne is not a belter. Nothing about Aretha's power is soft. She is a powerhouse. Stop comparing Aretha a force of nature to Dionne a frail like tone singer.

  • Please listen to Dionne's Hot Live and Otherwise CD, you might wanna re think, your commentary on the sound and quality of Dionne's voice. Back then!

  • @bhonda3 ....I have that album and that is a helluva album. Definitely, Dionne at her peak. Her take on Alfie on the album is "primo"....really her in her element.

  • @bhonda3 -- loved "Hot Live & Otherwise"-played that one out. Wish it were on CD.

  • dionne got the voice than aretha!! !! i love dionne and aretha too!! the voice of dionne like a pipe every she ohhhhh hmmmmm and to 00;10-00;20

  • Aretha's pipes and voice are better and stronger.

  • Oh my... I could hear this over & over again for the rest of my life...

  • yeah, i agree with you... those good old sweet days

  • There are 463 comments here and only five people commenting! Hummmmmmm

  • i stopped it was painful

  • because you were belting from the lower throat/upper chest.... aretha and natalies belts are supported from the upper throat, back palette, mask voice ..... plus if you belted like whitney, your belting range would be limited because your not raising your larynx like all the upper belters

  • i mean whitney is not mixing... made a mistake in my last comment... meant to say whitne does'nt mix because she looses power as she goes up

  • whitney is mixing because she looses power as she goes up.... the upper belters like aretha dont because there mixing from b4/c5.... like i said before whitneys technique is like etta, gladys, shirley but her voice is powerful and her throat is musclar as hell...... then you have singers like mariah, streisand and beyonce whos technique and larynx position is between (whitney's, shirleys , dionnes) and ( aretha, patti, chaka and natalie)

  • Comment removed

  • i dont understand why the upper chest belting fans are so intent on saying their fav singers belt in full chest or dominant chest, frankly they dont.... they mix and i would've wanted whitney to do the same.... whitney if she didnt smoke would of sustrained her voice but the smoking and belting high in her chest took a toll on her voice. aretha fans along wirth chaka and patti fans... consider yourself lucky that your fav singer mixes

  • and it annoys me when aretha fans say aretha is dominant in every single facet of singing when thats not true.... thats why i bring her down of her high horse.... and when i diss her its because some of her fans are crazy. personally aretha's voice has never done anything for me, my played her when i was younger and neer really did it for me, im more of a gladys or etta james lover

  • But you don't bring her down. You try, but you fail. Why would you even want to bring her down? That just makes you a hater.

  • in your mind, SHE's the queen on her trone... but i dont see that... i cant imagine any female singer being called the greatest, i just like to put her fans in their place. they undisputedbly say she can wipe the floor with any singer.... they talk in absoulutes with her when comparing her to others

  • But whether you like it or not she is the Queen and has deserves every letter of her title. You are a hater who has a deep seeded hate for Aretha and you are basically threatened by her impact.

  • Comment removed

  • You have no idea what you are talking about. You throw out words like resonance, mask, hard palate yet you have no idea how to connect them. You think that by throwing out these words that people will think you know what you're talking about, yet you don't even know how to define mixing correctly and you don't even know what a resonator is (which is why you think the diaphragm is a resonator). Keep trying.

  • i dont claim to know any more then you, infact you prob know tens times then me about vocal theory but in the past when im talking to you about the mechanics of the voice... you usually shy away from it........ and by saying that a someone can belt close to their head voice is true but if your going to look at something in black or white then you wont be able to understand my angle...... you nit pick two faults that are kinda like half truths that iv made and bring me down, why????

  • I DON'T CARE! That's the thing! I don't care if someone is belting in chest or mix! It has nothing to do with shying away from it. I just don't care, especialy when you leave 100 comments of the same thing on my videos. And I do't answer to such stupidity. How do you know women mix at C5? That is not the case for each individual woman, esp. Mariah. Your angle is wrong. What you said MADE NO SENSE. End of. It wasn't about bringing you down. You were just spouting shit and I called you out on it.

  • but how do you know if a singer in belting in chest rather then mix....most female singers are belting in mix around C5..... mariah has no depth and produces a girlish sound... she does'nt bring the vocal weight of her lower register and chest up

  • If the sound is more chesty and they can continue to resonate in it more than they can in a higher range. Mariah's voice is very textured. Her belts have a different COLOR to her lower register, but not a difference in vocal power.

  • apart from vocal type,,its also about stylistic choice..not everyone needs to power their C5 like Whitney..heck even Whitney doesnt power her C5 every time..there are times when she emphasizes her belts hence the powerful sound,,even that can be considered as stylistic choice..everything can be controlled by the singer..variable vocal mixes adds dynamics to an interpretation..C5's are easy for high belters hence the "less" effort to power it..why bother wasting energy running when you can walk.

  • OMG paddey and chimier are the same person

  • um............ no

    2 totally different people

  • i remember having a debate with you about the same topic..it seems to me that you are repeating the same thing all over again.

  • yeah... but you were saying chakas A5 was full chest..... i dont understnd why the fans of the higher belts say that.... i say the average female singers starts mixing around A4-C5 and whitney is around E5

  • you said jennifer holliday mixes at C5. No its thinning her voice and many singers do that espescially Jhud.

Jhud has the most obvious mixed voice ever, and you call her a round belter.

  • her A5-C#5 is round.... then it thins out........its not thinning of the voice...my dad whos a tenor said something about the average tenor mixes around F4..... and most female singers singers and he said me as well mix around A4-c5.... he also told me to feel my chest bone as i belt... as you belt high... you feel less of a rumbling

  • J-Hud is NOT a round belter at all.

  • jhud is round

    from A4-C5, is she not???

  • thank you so much for explaining that.

  • EXACTLY!

  • what do you consider the average contralto's starting belting range?

    G4?

  • You don't claim to know more than me, yet you told me I don't know "jack shit" about the mechanics of the voice. If I know nothing, then what do you know? I guess you just make it up then, eh? Next time, choose your words carefully because they will bite you in the ass.

  • i was saying it because i was agravated, you dont bother to help find the answer... but you simply reject what im saying and most the time when you do so... you pick one tiny fracture in what im saying and exploit it in a condecending tone

  • I reject what you say because you post 100 comments of the same thing on my videos. It gets boring and I don't care, hence why I ignore.

  • then dispell what im saying instead of draggin it on LOL but where does aretha start to mix???

  • F5/F#5

  • not not really she has belted all the way up to B5

in what appeared to be full chest and her YGB intro appeared to be full chest.

  • give me a break, B5 in full chest is impossible....

  • Impossible is nonthing

and I said "APPEARED to be in full chest"

if whitney can do a G#5 why cant Aretha do a B5?

Aretha is a much stronger belter than whitney.

  • yeah but saying B5 note appears to be in full chest is crazy to say. whitney has gone as high as G#5 but it was not FULL CHEST... her last full chest note is around Eb5-F5

  • NO NO NO

    it ends at G#5

she was clearly taking her speaking voice high, and thats not good.

Thats why alot of her belts Eb5 and above were thinning and loosing power.

Jennifer Holliday also has the same belting style.

  • Who? Whitney? Whitney has very powerful E5's and F5's. She lost a bit of power, but what she mostly lost was effortlessness.

  • whitney will regain clarity in the comng months... i heard i love the lord from the opera show, showed her voice off more then idnkmos...... im predicting clear MLYL vocals by marchs supposed tour without her being high and yelling

  • Where did you hear it? What site?

  • my sisters boyfriends sister who's a pretty big whitney fans ....went to the taping

  • He should release the audio.

  • I mean SHE should release the audio.

  • hopefully opera does but whitney might appear on x factor soon...... have you been keeping up on x factor.... LEONA OR BURKE???

  • Burke. Better sound and more soul.

  • did you watch that video" dionne, i just wanna be your everything........crazy belting

  • Not really crazy belting. Nice belting. That's it.

  • CRAZY NICE BELTING, considering how low the belts sit.... i have a questions, i dont know if you'll get where im coming from seeing that ur a guy but do you ever mimic these notes or just feel the notes in your head, as to where the resonance comes from a compare them to other female singers... if you do, dionne and whitneys belts sit lower in there chest( but we know that the vibrations from the larynx dont travel up but belting in CHEST does effect the sound) compared to aretha

  • You can't really "mimic" their chest notes. Your voice is not their voice, so you can't support your claim by mimicing them. It doesn't mean that they are using the same technique you are.

  • Im a mezzo, and i tried to mimic whitney's chest voice and gosh i must say it hurts.

    Ive tried Aretha's too.

    and chaka's

  • LOL!

  • im serious its hurts the back of the throat.

i wonder how her chest voice held up for 20+ years with that technique.

It really is painful. Maybe she wasnt meant to belt high. IDK

  • Or maybe you just weren't meant to belt like her lol!

  • that too

but when you use her belting technique you sort get a tone like hers.

it seems like she was using her throat and chest.

  • thats why as she went higher, she loses power and cant sustain the notes as well.... because she's belting in almost pure chest voice. typically all women start to mix around B4-C5, whitney mixes just shy of F5, even then her belts are in somwhat chest dominant. she prob could've done this her entire career but the smoking and drugs combined f'ked her voice

  • But do you think if you kept belting like her, your voice would last as long as hers did? I think it'sjust Whitney. She's definitely not singing from her throat. If she was, her sound would be very squeezed. She just has great breath support and is able to belt high without mixing. But the downside is she can't belt high for too long.

  • Chimy

    I am the voice

my voice will last much longer than hers.

    lol

but seriously her belts come from the back of the throat, aretha's, natalie's came from the font.

Patti's also come from the back of the throat. I guess that makes the sounds similar.

  • Patti's belts sound nothing like Whitney's. Whitney's are so supported. Plus, if she was belting at the back of the throat, she would have been straining her voice even in her prime, which she didn't. Whitney's voice is just built differently to anyone else's, but if she is singing with her throat, her throat is way more muscular than the average person, so it may not do to her what it does to others.

  • Chimier Im gonna assume your a guy.

Im a mezzo and Im serious whitney's does belt with her throat like christina, but she belts from the back it come a different place than aretha's and natalie's.

With whit's belting I did get some killer

    C5s and C#5s! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

  • Yes, I am a guy. But I still think she's not singing from her throat. She would have a more squeezed sound if she did, and if it does hurt the throat as you said, her voice would have deteriorated MUCH quicker, due to vocal abuse. Plus, you would hear the strain in her voice if she was projecting back there. Someone who projects from the back of her throat is Kelly Clarkson. Listen to her sing now. She can barely belt a thing and when she could belt, she sounded squeezed.

  • Whitney's belts certainly are different from Natalie and Aretha, but they are mixing, she is not. They have more power in the upper belt because of this. Whitney never really hung above G5 anyway. Plus, Natalie and Aretha's high belts have more support than Whitney's high belts, but she's not belting from her throat. The woman did like 500 shows in the 1985-1990. Her voice would have almost been gone by then if she was singing like that.

  • aretha didnt always mix her G5s & G#5s maybe A5s.

does aretha have a bigger chest capacity or whatever than whitney?

  • Yes.

  • but back to whitney.

Every time I try to imitate her belting I get a slight thorat feeling.

You can really feel it in the bottom of the throat top of the chest area. So maybe thats her way of mixing.

  • I doubt it's a way of mixing. Mixing wouldn't be felt in the throat. Plus, resonance is produced above the throat, so if she was belting with her throat, her belts would be less powerful.

  • Its something about her belting where its felt in the throat.

Her belting style is exteremly dangerous, hard on the chords very similar J Holliday.

    IMO

  • J. Holliday doesn't belt from her throat either. It's just when she does that "gargle" thing that is dangerous.

  • your getting that sore throat feeling or whatever it is because your belting LOWER not as high as aretha, patti, chaka or natalie...... chritina belts from her throat and thats why she produces that THROATY SOUND.... whitneys belts are set lower then most singers and she rarely belted as high or positioned her voice to belt like most female singers. whitney belted like the mid chest F4-C5 but could go into the range of the upper chest belters C5-G5 without sacrifing her technique

  • yeah, the throat feeling is because

    1. you dont belt that low... most likely you belt similar to aretha or any of the upper belters? and you dont keep your larynx that low so you havent built those muscles in your throat to enable you to do what whitney does.

PLUS remember that aretha and the other girls when they belt they use the back and middle palettee and mask voice more....

just because your experiencing displeasure in your throat does'nt mean whitney was a throat belter
