Perhaps when birds do this because seeing their image in the glass, they think it's another bird. In this case it being a male cardinal it sees itself as a threat, and in thinking it's another bird it was to get a fight on with it.

We have one that is doing this and as far as we can make out the bird is fighting for territory they do this in the wild only the other bird is his reflection in the window; we put some decals up on the out side of the window so that he could not see his reflection and he has calmed down.

I have a male cardinal that has been doing this for years. After a couple of years he took it up a notch and now flies into 4-5 windows in rapid succesion. He's a real pro at it. Very lucky I havent shot him since sometimes he does it early in the morning.
