@thisweekinlinux Yeah, I already have my Chromebook Series 5 now. My external HDD doesn't even work with it. I guess I just have to wait until Google pays Microsoft royalties for NTFS. The Chromebook is still a good tool, considering it wasn't meant to be used with internal and external drives anyway. But it would be nice to have the option. Thanks.
@emmanuel645645 yes and no. At least the last time I tried it (and definitely 9 months ago when I filmed this) nothing could be done locally, meaning any local video files on a USB drive wouldn't play, local music wouldn't play, etc. If it's online, it works great.
That's the other problem. If you have no internet connectivity, it's essentially a brick.
still i dont think that Clud Computing will work you need at lest 3G speeds on mobile broadband to work with a simple task or a desent Wired Broadband speed and lets talk about Hot Spots they are not that fast on crowed Cafe Shops and most of mobile laptop users don't have a wireless broadband and that's because is too expensive!! i'll stick with normal laptops like PC or MAC.
@UslennoX if a internet virus got into the system the system would automatically reset back to a earlier date before it was infected. Kind of like when you back up data except its already been done for you and there is no use for an external hard drive. But if your save file is corrupted you can download another one from the chrome store for free.
make it touch screen, and a 500gb internal drive, with usb 3.0 ports, with built in blu ray drive, 3gb ddr3, and it will be a number 1 laptop in the wwworld.
@WorldsCutestPup Most likely there is a skype app for this because it has a camera, and if there isnt there will be one very soon. You could always got to the website you know.
@appletylercj For me, personally, no. For you, maybe. If I'm going to have something that small, I'd deal with Windows/Android/iOS.. $350ish+ is just a bit of money to spend for a 11" screen to me, personally! If you find yourself to always be in a wifi location, and want to drop $350 for the wifi version, then that might be okay for YOUR personal use requirements!
I hate being vague like that, but I cannot recommend something to you, based on my own personal tastes and needs, honestly!
Gppd review, it seems that there are good stuff going on on that laptop. I guess I would need to get into those Cr-48 stuff. I wouldnt mind laying a new laptop around. But I would go with the Always Innovating triple threat Smartbook.
My Mac got 8 hours battery life. It wakes from sleep on a sec. I got the Chrome browser. And then all the other stuff, that makes it a computer! Why do i want this Chromebook? I love the browser.. But why hardware?
@brillemayn Probably price. I saw something today about the Chromebook being something like $50 for students. It's extremely limited, I know, but if all you need is web browsing, online services, and limited "office" work, it works very well.
This system might be perfect for my mother. Unlike my father and his macbook, my mom just wants facebook, gmail, and a few other websites. I don't even think she uses office documents, and I could probably wean her onto google docs if she wanted it. Thanks for the presentation; I'll be looking forward to their wider release in a few months (and her birthday is coming!)
@Dreadsta97 not by default. by default this comes with Chrome OS, which allows you to access the Chrome Web Store, which has loads of "applications" in it (web-based applications, and a lot of web links). Nothing local.
@TimesEyez I don't have a clue how much this will cost if it ever releases to the public, but it's an entirely different device from the iPad. Primarily, it has a physical keyboard, and no touch interface, and it's entirely centered around a web browser instead of individual applications.
@thisweekinlinux I know it's different, but that doesn't answer my question. Why would people buy this over a iPad? It seems to me that a laptop being centered entirely around the web is rather limited and it doesn't make things easier for the user either. This seems to be more of a product surrounded around Google's clouded vision and less on what the market wants or needs.
@TimesEyez I suppose it depends entirely on the end user requirements. There are definitely people out there that just want a web browser, nothing else. Personally, I prefer my Android-based tablet and phone, but I can see the need in the market for a purely cloud-based device that actually runs flash and has a keyboard, if the price is right.
I think the better question is, why would people buy this over an Android-based tablet? After paying $280 for mine, I'm spoiled by it.
Yeah...except everything on a mac sans the aluminum body is cheap. All their parts are developed by dying children at foxconn just like every other laptop manufacturer. They should have stuck to buying their parts from asus...but they're that cheap.
The big difference is that Chrome OS (the default OS on the laptop) is entirely geared toward the cloud, meaning you don't use local storage, you don't use local applications. If your laptop is destroyed, all your data is still in the cloud. Of course this does add limitations to what you can/can't do (such as putting a video file on your USB stick and playing it -- wouldn't work for me).
@CodeMaster9000 technically ChromeOS is supposed to support local downloads and have a built-in media player, but the last time I tried it, it failed miserably.
@hum4naft3rall on ChromeOS I wasn't really using much besides Gmail and YouTube, sadly. They just all seemed like links to websites to me (which, well, that's the point).
I've actually got Ubuntu on my Cr-48 at this point, and I'm using it a ton more (basically, all the time that I'm not shooting/editing videos). I just need my local storage.
i think that in the further version it would be a way better than this one. there are so many application that you uses in workday that couldn't be forget so easily as the company did.
@legospartanz1 no, sorry, it doesn't. If you flash the firmware to a different one you can install other operating systems on it, and you could put whatever you want there.
@kazora1001 it looks like gtalk is the primary purpose, but it's possible to use it for live streaming on Justin.tv, ustream, or making videos on YouTube, though the quality is horrible.
I think, by the time it's actually released, it will be even better. And I might buy it if it were $200-$300. Let's see if they price it that reasonably.
Yes, the Chrome Web Store. I personally like Quake Live, since I don't have to install anything and it's a blast. I got myself a cheap netbook for specifically these same tasks (and more, since it's a netbook), using my own custom version of Ubuntu Netbook Edition. Games, photo editing, email, chatting, work, etc. using apps provided through Chrome or the Ubuntu Software Store/Synaptic Package Manager/Ubuntu Tweak/etc.
What about document editing ? How does it handle this ? Do you have some sort of doc editing software(like openoffice) ? And how much data can you store in google's cloud ?
@floflorian by default you can use Google Docs (since you have to use a Google account to log in, you should have Docs available). I believe there are other online doc services too, like Zoho.
With Google, you get 1gb of data in docs, and you can buy more. Here's a page on their site: docs.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=37603
@floflorian Your wrong! actually if you use google docs and make your documents with the gdocs format then you have unlimited storage, the 1gb is only for your uploaded files
cons: one usb port, 16gb drive (solid state is a + though), you can only use google docs, and the final and biggest con it basically a macbook with a black finish (at least its not a finger print magnet) and that is all the cons i can think of and i think when it goes on sale it will be a slow seller but give it time and i can almost guarantee it will beat the macbooks in sales
my friend got his few days ago i played around with it and i have some pros and cons (yes i know it a prototype) pro: fast boot time, launches chrome has soon as you sign in, when hold down control or alt it shows what the command keys are, useless keys such as cap lock and scroll lock are gone, function keys are replaced with dedicated command keys
@sccerstr09 the Cr-48 comes with 100Mb of free data per month from Verizon for 2 years (though mine hasn't worked since Christmas day...) as a part of the testing program.
@thisweekinlinux I have been happy with the 3g data speeds, but they need a have a way to proxy option like Opera Turbo for mobile use. My favorite feature is the batter. My laptop is dead 3x by the time the Cr-48 dies.
What do I think ... I think Google's putting a lot of faith in the old VGA port when most things are going to DVI & HDMI. If this was like $50, it would be great for students using Google Docs for everyday homework and such. But if it's like $100+, not sure if it's such a good deal. It's limited hardware & use. I like the idea of being cloud-based, so if it dies, you just get a new one and keep going. But they need to make this inexpensive for it to work.
@therandomdot See, that's a point I mostly overlooked. VGA is good because it works with pretty much everything, but you're right, it's on its way out.
I downloaded the mirrors edge app for free when the store opened then I realized the app was was deleted from store site and replaced with a pay app hinder me from downloading it again from the store, stupid EA!
@lovinmychrome the only way I've found to access it is through web applications, like the youtube direct upload from webcam, or streaming sites like Ustream or Justin.tv
almost irrelivent to this video but how can i majorly geek up and learn about useful things like using one of my computers as a server or handy terminal commands etc I'm fluent with lots of software and pick things like this up extremely fast but I don't know where to look?
@NakedJKid I've made a couple of videos about terminal commands, nothing comprehensive though. There are tons of websites with that kind of information online though. linuxcommand. org has some good information, so does ss64. com
@greenrolaids Lol! I'm amazingly far from being a Mac fanboy. Tbh I don't like Apple at all. But you can't deny that this touchpad is a lot like Apple's magicpad or whatever they call it. Not that I think it's bad that they're copying it. In fact I'm glad that I can now get a nice touchpad without having to buy a Mac computer!
You are a Genius Jordan :D One of my first thoughts when I started watching this video was: Oh man, no Commandline? D: But overall, I come to the conclusion that I still don't want a cloudbased OS. It's to restricitve, you're depending on one vendor, have to trust him not to screw things up(and I know certain big companys who managed to permanently lose data of their businessclients...)I'm very happy with my not cloudbased Operating Systems ;) btw. 1200*800 on a 12'1 Screen? Ouch :/
@Tarnus88 yeah, no commandline, but with crosh I can ssh into my home server and do what I need. :)
I agree, it's a bit restrictive. The problem I found was when I was at my in-laws house and ran out of 3g data, and found a ChromeOS bug... (couldn't buy more data)
Personally, I think The Cloud is the way forward. Being able to access all your info from anywhere through servers that have so much storage is great! While I do admit, until The Cloud is proven to be secure, putting personal info out is not clever. What I think they should do, is just begin using encryption! Then yeah, I would go for The Cloud. I just wish they would bring the Cr-48 to the UK.
@tazz1418 you can download builds of ChromiumOS right now, but it's still not final. When ChromeOS is "final", you should be able to download an official version.
If you want a similar experience, just download/install the Chrome web browser on whatever system you currently use. :)

But they need to make this inexpensive for it to work.
therandomdot 1 year ago
@therandomdot See, that's a point I mostly overlooked. VGA is good because it works with pretty much everything, but you're right, it's on its way out.

Well you can always pay more if this laptop does become over 100 dollars and then install

@de132 I enabled the file browser, and I've used Ctrl+o, and it does open, but if I put in an SD card or USB drive, I can see it, but not browse it.

almost irrelivent to this video but how can i majorly geek up and learn about useful things like using one of my computers as a server or handy terminal commands etc I'm fluent with lots of software and pick things like this up extremely fast but I don't know where to look?
NakedJKid 1 year ago
@NakedJKid I've made a couple of videos about terminal commands, nothing comprehensive though. There are tons of websites with that kind of information online though. linuxcommand. org has some good information, so does ss64. com

@liverst it's Chrome OS, and I believe it's 0.9, but I'm not sure of the minor version. I don't have my Cr-48 on me at the moment.

Ouch :/
Tarnus88 1 year ago
@Tarnus88 yeah, no commandline, but with crosh I can ssh into my home server and do what I need. :)
I agree, it's a bit restrictive. The problem I found was when I was at my in-laws house and ran out of 3g data, and found a ChromeOS bug... (couldn't buy more data)
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
Personally, I think The Cloud is the way forward. Being able to access all your info from anywhere through servers that have so much storage is great! While I do admit, until The Cloud is proven to be secure, putting personal info out is not clever. What I think they should do, is just begin using encryption! Then yeah, I would go for The Cloud. I just wish they would bring the Cr-48 to the UK.

can i download ChromeOs?
tazz1418 1 year ago
@tazz1418 you can download builds of ChromiumOS right now, but it's still not final. When ChromeOS is "final", you should be able to download an official version.
If you want a similar experience, just download/install the Chrome web browser on whatever system you currently use. :)
