I think people have missunderstand these whole thing about amazons and gladiatrix. Amazons were greek beatiful, tall, strong womens that were warriors and lived in an island. GLADIATRIX were womens that had to fight, they were forced in to it. researchers have been asleep, the idea of female gladitors have been know for a long time, just look at some movies and shows, there you can see some slaves forced to fight!!!

That is quite incorrect actually.

Just as we have female sports today, females were also featured and included in sports during those times as well. But JUST LIKE today, they aren't as promoted or supported.

Female gladiators DID exist, although they were the minority and not as featured nor as promoted as the males. They were often of Germanic origin, but this portrayal is VERY unrealistic and makes it come across as something of fantasy and not history.

By the way, here are some random facts about gladiatrices to back this "claim" up.

-Their first attested appearance is under Nero, at the games organised by Patrobius for Tiridates I of Armenia[2] There is also a reference in Petronius's Satyricon - possibly based on a factual show - to a female essediarius, or one who fought from a Celtic style chariot

-A female Roman skeleton unearthed in Southwark, London in 2001 was identified as a female gladiator,

Thanks for posting this! I studied this film at university and it has always stuck in my mind as the worst film ever made (I did not know acting could possibly be so bad. The historical inaccuracies are fun too. It's like having George Washington mudwrestling with Klingons in 1980s France)- but darn funny!

Oh, Dear God! there is so much wrong with this picture. The amazon race was long dead ( or by some accounts, in the Russian/Mongolian parts of Asia), by the time of the Roman impire.

amazon race is a myth. They were estimated to be fighting women from the race known as Scyths. Long long before Rome was founded. The Scyths let their women fight when they needed them or they wanted to. No archeological find has uncovered ancient burial mounds full of "female only" warriors in russian/turkey etc. Hence one assumes such race of women didnt exist or was at least mixed.

Thats okay...i wasnt taking offence. There is a big budget Gladiatrix movie coming out in 2009 called Amazon. At first they cast Scarlet Johannson in the lead but she switched to do Pompeii to be made same year. Besides she is 5' 3 hence...not much of a gladiatrix/amazon. But should be interesting.

Actually, they did exist. There have been graves found to prove it, too. History's Mysteries (History Channel) had an episode on the subject, titled "Amazon Women".

I believe I saw that show and it wasnt like they were definitive in their final assessment. Basically they were as confused as the lay persons. It all got down to whether fighting women did exist around the black sea and if so more than likely they were part of a tribe containing men in normal male roles. Hence not the fabled "womens only club" with men brought in for annual mating rituals.

From what people have discovered in digs, if Amazons did exist, the territory they covered ranges from North Africa, including the Canary Islands, to Southern Europe. From that point on, their tribes and culture began to disipate from constant conflicts against other societies, the Greeks being one of them.
