@leandroearth What is mindblowing about his work is that i am sure that if you watch it again 5 years after ill give you an equally challenging and profound outcome.
I don't consider this stupid New Age music in the slightest. It is very much of the period, the sounds produced by the analogue synthesizers of the 70s, and fits the scene in the film perfectly in my view. In no sense is it the kind of normal music used to dictate to the "stupid viewer" what to feel; instead it's very open-ended.
It is very much of an ilk with the kind of sounds/music produced by Artemiev for Tarkovsky films.
I think this scene is meant to heighten your sense of awareness and almost put you in a dreamlike trance, in order to experience the highly deliberate, meditative pacing of the scenes in the zone. Brilliant.
God, Stalker is just so bloody brilliant. I think that scene alone has the most cuts than any scene in the entire film. So many long takes. I adore long takes and this film has many.
@michielrummens May be you have reason. I reapped this fragment from the dvd. I find the ost of a series of soundtracks of Andrey but is an incomplete and rare mix of tracks from zerkalo & stalker. And did not find this track. I have no way of checking what you say. But I belive you. But any way this soundtrack I think it's a good job.
this is the CD that I have:
Andrey Tarkovsky Vol 4 Zerkalo/Stalker Toei Music Pubishing Co. Ltd. Printed in Japan.
@KippenhanFilms He is not totally wrong: it's by Artemyev, but edited from the original sequence with added background music and pumped up volume. By Tarkovsky's intentions the music had to be confused with natural sounds in this sequence (search wkpdia for more details), so it could not be so prominent as it is in this remix. To watch the original sequence search the vid "Stalker (1979) (English subtitles). Part 2/7. ".
Also consider I'm basing on facts: I watched the original frames recently.
@michielrummens I bought a CD compilation of Eduard Artemiev's Tarkovsky film music from Electroshock records in Russia, which included this piece. why would this label, which is run by Artemiev's son, Artemiy, release this if, as you say "it certainly isn't Eduard Artemiev's music" it seems like a weird assertion to make.
Possibly some of the most pretentious comments I've ever seen. Why should it matter to you if someone doesn't like Stalker but prefers a Hollywood film, Hollywood directors make a masterpiece every once and a while, not the stereotypical masterpiece thats slow and hard to follow but still the same. I also wouldn't call Stalker a masterpiece for numerous reasons. Mirror and The Sacrifice were MUCH better I thought, those were Tarkovsky's masterpieces.
when i saw this movie i thought it was boring....now i have watched this scene more than 30 times. there are certain shots and situations i can´t forget
You have to realise that posting on the internet is like screaming into a black void. I'm not saying you're wrong, but concentrate on talking about what's good about your ideas rather about what's bad about other people's ideas. You'll learn soon enough what a waste of time the internet is, but just get on with life and don't waste your time on criticising what is obviously total shite.
@SleepPersonParty And why, might I ask, is that? Does the back of dudes' heads get you off or something? Why is this even on YouTube? The uploader should put up something halfway interesting to someone who has had a lobotomy, or don't put up anything at all.
@leprechaun2011 The beautiful black and white photography aside, this sequence is important, especially withing the context of the narrative, because it demonstrates the mixture of fearful optimism and dread that is circling through the minds of the characters in question. Of course, Stalker as a whole is much more impressive than the sum of its parts, but had this scene been in a hurry, it wouldn't have been as engaging. The feeling of impending doom is emphasized by the lovely score.
Someone please make a game based off this movie and its storyline (though still freeroam) but not S.T.A.L.K.E.R., I mean a Stalker game, based in Russia around the same NPP as in the movie, and same mutants, anomalies, all that.
@n1b3luNg That one is based on it changing a bit things. Anyway it is closer, you can read Roadside Picni book on which the film is based if you wish.
@har32 and you have no right to try to be an pretentious snob and tell someone what real cinema is. Twilight is a shit saga, but thats my opinion, just as it could be somebody's opinion that this is shit.
@har32 LOL AND TWILIGHT ITS A REAL FILM? IM SORRY BUT APART OF HAVING SOME SHITTY SPECIAL EFECTS AND SOME POOR PERFORMANCES ( WHICH ITS NOT AN OPINION ITS A FACT) TWILIGHT IS SHIT ITS JUST ANOTHER FILM WHO WILL LAST MAXIMUM 2 YEARS AND THE PUBLIC WILL FORGET IT. MOVIES LIKE STALKER GET TO REMAIN BECAUSE THE DIRECTOR WASNT INTERESTED IN MAKING THE FILM PROFITABLE OR HAVE SUCESS IN HOLLYWOOD CIRCLES. TARKOVSKY PUT HIS SOUL AND HEART ON THIS FILM. THATS A GOOD DIRECTOR WHICH MAKES GREAT FILMS.
I don't know... Tarkovsky's work is amazing in general, but honestly he could have probably done well to shave a MINUTE off of this scene. Just a minute.

Indeed. In the "sculpting in time", he opposes symbolism in cinema, correct? Because he believed that the strongest message is an image so strong, that any human being can understand it and know what it is for. Not an analogy, not symbolism, but the one thing that cinema has gifted us with: Image.

There are better movies than Stalker: Citizen Kane, Cassablanca, Taxi Driver, Apocalypse Now, Dr Strangelove, French Connection, Bullit, Serpico, Terminator, Alien(s), Blade Runner, Master and Commander, Das Boat, Until the End of the World, Return, A Bridge Too Far.
Each and every one of them pales Stalker. Stalker is just badly written and badly done. But poses as masterpiece and some people buys such things as they buy Warhol shit.

I tried to watch this movie, I really did, but this is just not my cup of tea... I cant "enjoy" a 3 min scene showing 3 guys staring while traveling on a train, I just got bored where they were trying to get into some sort of a haunted house...
Maybe I'll give it another chance when Im in the mood...
Most obviously you do not. As far as i am concerned you are already defined. You follow the wave. Get yourself some perspective and dont act like a fucking , impulsive 2 year old
ufff, yeahh. how do you know? i am 2 and follow the wave and you... you watch bolt. bye, great adult and subnormal surfer with stupid questions (questions worthy of bolt...)
By the way, disagreeable illiterate. Metaphisic cinema means: to assume the Dostoievski's tradition (as a proud russian) in the cinema, in order to approach the important questions that we should ask and respond as human beings; just like Bolt!
Bye, freakie loser. I have to go, because a huge wave (called Bolt) is coming...
I agree with you Carl. But this is largely left to the viewers. Personally, this is one of the most mind numbing movies I've watched and as much as I love the concept, my way of expression would be different. But that's what is the beauty of art and what is disliked by one becomes the favorite of another. :)
I think this is one of my top favorite scenes on the movie. It's cool when you notice, when the movie begins, the B&W are VERY contrasted. And as they progress towards the zone it starts to get balanced. Until they get in colors. Trully genious... Now I'll have to watch it again!
This cheapo new age muzak has nothing to do with the original "peace". It was pasted on it a few years ago, after some asshole editor at Russian DVD publisher RusCiCo had found the original soundtrack wasn't good enough.
p3n37r470r - You better get some information before you resort to swearing. Do a Google search for "RusCiCo Stalker DVD". Go to the first link, find the "January 29, 2002" part, and start to read slowly... slowly...

I will never understand what makes this movie so distinguished.
Or is it just the fact that the movie is made by Tarkovsky that justifies all the good critics?

shut up, ignorant snob
patin666tyjhgjgh 2 years ago
Most obviously you do not. As far as i am concerned you are already defined. You follow the wave. Get yourself some perspective and dont act like a fucking , impulsive 2 year old
CarlMinez 2 years ago 2
ufff, yeahh. how do you know? i am 2 and follow the wave and you... you watch bolt. bye, great adult and subnormal surfer with stupid questions (questions worthy of bolt...)

still watching bolt... freakie consumer
patin666tyjhgjgh 2 years ago
By the way, disagreeable illiterate. Metaphisic cinema means: to assume the Dostoievski's tradition (as a proud russian) in the cinema, in order to approach the important questions that we should ask and respond as human beings; just like Bolt!
Bye, freakie loser. I have to go, because a huge wave (called Bolt) is coming...

well, yes its lacking virtual dogs, so it cant be very good.

I agree with you Carl. But this is largely left to the viewers. Personally, this is one of the most mind numbing movies I've watched and as much as I love the concept, my way of expression would be different. But that's what is the beauty of art and what is disliked by one becomes the favorite of another. :)

Music is good but the original one is better.

Alexander Kaidenovsky looks like a badass mofo in this movie.

I think this is one of my top favorite scenes on the movie. It's cool when you notice, when the movie begins, the B&W are VERY contrasted. And as they progress towards the zone it starts to get balanced. Until they get in colors. Trully genious... Now I'll have to watch it again!

Author: maybe you should post it in the video description that this isn't the original soundtrack?

I had fun putting our music under this scene.
But all respect to Eduard Artemiev ofcourse...amazing soundtrack!

If calling someone a "scum" makes no difference for you, I don't see why a perverted soundtrack should...
ribogok 3 years ago
Objecting to being called a "scum" reason for downrating? Are you people all dyslexic or what?

That music's not actually in the film, is it?

this is the actual music played during this great peace of cinema.

This cheapo new age muzak has nothing to do with the original "peace". It was pasted on it a few years ago, after some asshole editor at Russian DVD publisher RusCiCo had found the original soundtrack wasn't good enough.
ribogok 3 years ago
this is the music in the version i have....and i like it...but i wish i could listen to the truly original one
atvar2000 3 years ago
Afaik it's original soundtrack composed by Edward Artemyev...
And it's a perfect piece...
...Of Ambient, not New Age, you, ignorant scum =)...

p3n37r470r - You better get some information before you resort to swearing. Do a Google search for "RusCiCo Stalker DVD". Go to the first link, find the "January 29, 2002" part, and start to read slowly... slowly...
ribogok 3 years ago
Sorry, I didn't want to offend you. This 'new' soundtrack written by composer of original one, and I don't think it ruins the moment =P...

Damn, you are right. This music is aweful.

I find this to be the most transcendent and contemplative of all of Tarkovsky's images.
