In a world where children have been born to non- related parents, are still born with deformities and mental issues, ie: Autism/Aspergers, ADD,ADHD, down syndrom, OCD, depression, torettes, etc. I believe the story cousins marrying having deformed babies are a myth. Western countries raise cousins more like brothers and sisters, so the awkwardness may have started the myth. Although in my religion, I have right to marry a cousin, it doesn't feel right, they're like brothers to me.

Because my neighbor married his cousin and their minister said that Protestant denominations such as Baptist, Pentecostal, Lutheran, Presbyterian, and Methodist all allow it. Why would they do that if it's an abomination? He said that condemning it was a Catholic and Orthodox interpretation and those church's law not God's law. Personally, I think they should be allowed to marry. I just think it's weird that Protestants would allow an abomination.

The percentage for birth defects among non-relatives is 1-2%. For cousins, it's 4-5%. That's not a high enough risk to say goodbye to someone you love. If my wife had a disease in her family like Cystic Fibrosis or something, I still would have married her. People should be allowed to have love and happines. Life is too short to live it any other way.

I don't know where you get your numbers but the risk of hereditary diseases in the children of cousins are double to what they normally are... every other week we're performing surgery on infants belonging to an ethnic minority in my city where marriage between blood relations is common.

the light stuff are little abnormities that can be repaired - others like thalassemia, that can not.

the sad thing: the related parents never know about the risks beforehand...
