Field Hockey dates back to at least 2000BC, up untill 1960's it was called hockey, ice hockey was invented in 1875 by those who played hockey on ice, in such place as Canada, Russia etc,ice hockey strong countries!hence it is called Ice Hockey- hockey on ice! in the past 40 years ice hockey grew and today in the US and Canada is called Hockey! Field Hockey remains to be called hockey in almost every other country! its uneducated Americans and Canadians who write shite about ice hockey on wiki

@Hynes1404 it doesn't matter. field hockey is not a major international event at any point. in the 2010 winter olympics, ice hockey was a huge part of the ratings. ice hockey is the national sport of multiple countries, and is huge in europe, and obviously in the u.s. and canada. field hockey is only big in several countries.

i'm guessing people played field hockey before ice hockey since... well ice skates came after the invention of the field so field hockey would have come first and is there for 'actual hockey'

@downesdan the first organized match of ice hockey was played in 1875. organized field hockey came around the same time but any type of "hockey" is a variation of ice hockey. hockey played on ice is the actual way to play the game. field hockey is also fun, but it's nothing near the real form of hockey.
