Why do people always assume that an interstellar civilization would be peaceful? Wishful thinking, perhaps? As long as intelligent creatures have free will, there will be conflict over resources, territory, etc. esp. in a "crowded" and expanding neighborhood. At the very least there might be pirates and rogue raiders.
@WestVirginiaRebel Perhaps because a lot of people think(me included) that in order to advance to the other level( galactic and interstellar) we have to understand that living in harmony is the key to suceed. Extrapolating this thought then we assume that only civilizations that made that understanding jumped to the next step. That civilizations that never made it fell into self destruction. We could be wrong.... but that is your why :)
@calito44 In my opinion, It's just as likely that a civilization will fall into non-peace after attaining galactic travel as to stay peaceful. Sure, it's probably that they'll need to be peaceful at one point, but there's no saying they'll stay that way.
@WestVirginiaRebel Well, there will always be those kind of species. However, it seems more likely that a wise, benevolent species would evolve high enough to journey enough stars to find us.
Conquer. And would hopefully be driven by similar desires that the smartest of us have. The desire to understand, and figure things out.

Sometimes I'd rather watch Carl Sagan watch stars than watch stars myself.
