Thats a pretty insipid version of a tune masterfully done on the first Shakti record I believe 'Natural Elements' with John McLaughlin. Wow they really made this tune something. This version is quite boring, & monotenous in my opinion, check out the tune on the record though, one of my favorites!
Most of you are right, the violin processed through the soundboard does sound a little awkward at first, but understand that the 16th note runs that L. Shankar performs are very difficult and he does more than an excellent job preserving the beauty of musical improvisation within the constraints of the Raaga in comparison to the album version that Jan Gerbarek renders on Saxaphone.
Zakir Hussain is definitely my strongest source of musical inspiration and a long time idol of mine. I think this composition in Raag Hamsadhwani is absolutely brilliant, combining western elements such as guitar and sax (in this case violin).
wow zakir looks so young (he always does, but this one's really young). Must have recorded in the late 80s or something. The violin sounds a little weird, it's making an unusual echo, probably not processed well on the board.
what is this weird violin the guy is playing on???????

does anyone know if this is on a cd?
myomy15 5 years ago
Yep, I've heard it with the cheesy electric violin replaced by a saxophone - the album is called 'making music' and that's one of the best tracks.
Yorkiebean 4 years ago
Having listened to the cd, i find it weird because:
Cd has john mclaughlin, here we have larry coryell
CD has jan gabarek on the tenor sax, here we have L Shankar on the 10 stringed violin
Brilliant! a jam with all of them would be brilliant

the electric violin is pretty bad, cheesy..but the solo is amazing. Zakir is the man
