@trailboyus66 Thanks for the comments. It's always good to hear and exchange views on artistes that for some reason are well known in one country but obscure elsewhere. If you say you like Jigsaw, give a listen to another of their tracks called 'Lovefire' if you haven't already done do.
They should have kept this as their single, it's a bit more powerful than Candlewick Green's version. Well constructed with some clever chord changes - especially going to Eb on the chorus. Outstanding!
Just to add to my add to my comment below - have just listened to the version of 'Who do you think you are' by Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods (whom I had never ever heard of before - sorry folk from Cincinatti Ohio but they didn't make much of an impression in Norwich, England during the 1970's. That said its another fantastic version - check it out.
@lostintrivia Wow. I love Jigsaw and even have the single Sky High. It has come back on my favorite oldies station's but when it comes to this song The Heywoods is the only one played in The USA until youtube. Helen Shapiro is another youtube experience that we didn't have the pleasure of hearing "outside of a movie or two"...
Difficult this - it seems to be a song that it is difficult not to do a good version of. For me the track will always be Candlewick Green and much later St Etienne rather than Jigsaw. That said, they actually wrote the song and there is nothing you can say against it - though 'Sky High' will always be their anthem.
The puzzle (pun definitely intended) is, why we United Statesians weren't exposed to the original Jigsaw version when it first came out!? Don't get me wrong, I like the Heywoods, but we didn't get a chance to hear this version and judge it on its merits back then. Why do the powers that be in the music industry shut us off from what's good so often? That's the puzzle that needs to be solved (pun again intended)!
All three versions are great, hard to decide which one is favorite...all are very well done...Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods version has best drum line of three
@atkman74 I agree that I prefer the Bo Donaldson version, but I heard it first and that seems to be the determining factor. I prefer the Wednesday version of Last Kiss, but I heard it first...
I've always loved this track, although I remember Camberwick Green singing it more clearly. This is a very "Jigsaw" song, though, quite reminiscent of their "Sky High". Great to hear it again!
I spent many a happy hour acting as compare and supporting DJ to Jigsaw at many air bases and colleges in East Anglia in the 1970s - a great band and such a loss when Clive Scott passed to a better place
I stumbled on to this version by accident and I'm glad I did. I really like the piano and horns. At 2:20 the vocals flipflop, lead sings backup and backup becomes the lead. Well done.
Being in the US I only knew of Bo Donaldson's version. I knew of Jigsaw's Sky High, but only found out recently that Des Dyer was their lead singer. So now it all makes sense. And hearing Jigsaw do this I can hear the stylistic similarities between it and Sky High. Someone posted a comment on my channel that her relative was in the Heywoods and co-wrote the song--but clearly that could not have been possible.
The original is often the truest (if not the slickest). Bo's version is a very solid #2. This version is the best for these reasons: the higher key of the original gives the tune more of a sense of tension & desperation, and the earlier arrangement does more with less instrumentation. The quodlibet at the end has a higher profile in the original. Bo's version, is fine, though; certainly more lush & romantic! Candlewick Green a distant 3rd, St. Etienne a pale 4th (too early 90's pop ephemeral)
Bo's version is the best of the 3 in my view, it's a little more energetic and forceful. This one is next, with Candlestick Green's version my least favorite.
I can understand why you like CG's version the leastThe problem with Candlewick Green's rendition, is that it's too close a copy of Jigsaw's, though I still like it myself
I'm also partial to Bo's, (But Jigsaw's is also well worth it) since it was the one that I grew up with.
It was only this past year that I learned that two versions preceded it.
Bo's OTHER big hit "Billy Don't Be a Hero" was originally by Paper Lace
"Who Do You Think You Are" by Saint Etienne is certainly one of my all-time top 10 songs and it's really touching to finally discover the original version. Simply awesome!
it seems to be that the group used much of the backing track(s) from Jigsaw's original. I mean the piano intro, and bassline is alomst exact. They seemed to have just added their vocals in place of Jigsaw's vocals. Could this be the case?
It's obvious that Bo's famous rendition, however was done fresh and anew, even though it's a similar arrangement.
Wow I never knew Jigsaw did a version. I grew up in South Africa and Jigsaw weren't terribly popular there, but the Candlewick Green version of this was a hit when I was a kid. This version is still great, but it's my least favourite of the three.
I didn't know this was a Jigsaw song either. They should have done better in the US, I liked Sky High and Love Fire. As for Bo and the Heywoods, they were the house band for the Dick Clark produced ABC show Action and covered many of the hit songs of the day.
At a party three years ago and three of the members of Candlewick Green got up and sang "who do you think you are" it was sheer brilliance they still have that great 70s sound and still great down two eath comics. There version was the best.
@Hardesty55 this is the original and they wrote this...i like candlewick green s version too and their flop follow up was also written by scott/dyer from jigsaw...leave a little love..respect to the guys...but jigsaw are the best
Wow! Never heard this version before! I originally only knew it by Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods, then I discovered an earlier version by Candlewick Green, thinking that IT was the original. Now I know that Jigsaw originated it!
I love all 3 versions too, there is very little difference among the 3 recordings; all have arrangements that are nearly identical.Even the instrumentation is almost the same, especially the opening piano riff The version by St. Etienne is very different in style and arrangement
Yes, I LOVE all 3 versions. This version by Jigsaw sounds the most genuine & the most masculine. Argumentative, sassy, but sexy, with a juicy bit of rawwrrr! BoD&tH had an excellent recording; but it became immediately obvious that the song was used as an internal band confrontation between studly Bo & the real lead vocalist of that band. Without heart, their song became domestic abuse by song. St. Etienne's was delicious with the dance mix to it. This song needs a hiphop edit. LOVE THIS SONG!
So this is where it all started! It's delicious! I just hope I can find this song by Jigsaw on iTunes. Lemme check right now. nope. not there. L8r I will check amazon to see if I can buy this lp or cd. Love this song! OMG!
Once again 45rpm, thanks. I honestly never knew it was a Jigsaw song. And I reckon you're right: this version really has something. Though I quite liked the more recent Saint Etienne version of this.
