I'm with you...I couldn't grasp 'Notes From Underground'. Comments here are helpful. Dostoyevsky has other novels that I really love. The Insulted and Injured; Brothers Karamazov; Crime and Punishment; The Idiot; The Double; short story 'Mr. Prokarchin' (which kind of goes with your other video 'An Action A day Keeps Global Capitalism Away').... Dostoyevsky illuminates human depravity in the light of God's love. That's my limited perception anyhow.
third and final comment...I see a bit of myself in the Underground Man. And at the risk of alerting the authorities, I identify with some of the crazier and zanier characters in his later novels. I hope that maybe a few years down the road you may consider picking up the novel again...all the best.
Gosh I wish I could write on and on about "Notes"...let me briefly tell you why I loved it. First, I thought his confrontation with the Police officer was HILARIOUS and the confrontation with Simonov and the party at the hotel was fantastically funny. The UNderground man is simply someone who is a social misfit, uncomfortable in his own skin, but the fact that he is that way, allows him to make some rather funny and incisive observations about the modern world. Although the way he expresses
can seem borderline arrogant, that's part of his condition...in his inability to "show off" in more "worldly" ways, he is sorta stuck talking "bookishly"...and to me that is also funny. His critique of the enlightenment, the belief that man can be perfected by social engineering is an important reply to 19th century ideologies like socialism and capitalism. Finally, I really was amused by the psychological "gymnastics" at every turn from this Underground man...but bottomline, last comment
i picked up notes from the underground yesterday in the bookstore, but just didn't end up doing more than that. what about the writing style specifically turned you off?
