  • at 2:33 does anybody know if thats the 401

  • Now they don't even have a sign-off. It just cuts to a computerized .gif of a boat going across the screen really slow and this generic soft-jazz melody playing in the background. So modern, so bland lol.

  • I love this sign off. It's got alot of good qualities to it. You don't seem any sign offs anymore though. Kind of a shame, if I was up late they were a staple of my childhood at times.

  • why did this hae canada's anthem?

  • @Articunoboy12 because due to Rogers Cable (like Time Warner or Comcast in the US) and some analog antenna being able to carry the signal from this channel in London, Ontario, WQLN decided to honor that by playing the national anthem last before sign off. The geography of Erie, PA and London, ON makes it possible to pick it up with a strong antenna.

It's not federally required if your near Canadian territories/provinces to do so, it's more customary and respectful.

  • takako uehara!

    anpanman!

  • Rogers Cable I herd has decided to withdraw it's decsion to can WQLN on there cable networks. This is good news for WQLN

  • That may kill WQLN since they get a big percentage of pledges from southern Ontario (London, St. Thomas, Woodstock).

  • Yep it was when the remains of Hurricane Ike came up through last year. It distroyed there trasmitter. After that they went all digial

  • I belive a few years ago there transmitter was damaged by a strong wind and they went all digital .

  • Man! So much about the city, especially the Bay Front, has changed since then. It's both sad (because of how much time has passed) and happy (to see the changes.)

I remember not even knowing about the Brig Niagra because it was on shore and not talked about very much until it was restored.

  • As a visitor to Erie, the Bay Front now looks very impressive. And London... looks the same :P

  • Wow! How often do you see an American station acknowledge its Canadian viewers? This is pretty cool!

I know WQLN's signal can be received over the air in some parts of Ontario (at least until Feb. '09) but does it really go as far as London, or is it just carried on cable in London?

  • With regular rabbit ears, it's not possible to pick up Erie stations from London. We get WQLN (cable 8), WICU (cable 61) and WJET (cable 62) via Rogers cable from London.

  • Down in San Diego, CW affiliate XETV, which is a Mexican station transmitting from across the border in Tijuana, acknowledges its American viewers by playing the national anthems of both Mexico and the USA every day, the former required by Mexican broadcast law. Search XETV sign-on for the video with station ID in both English and Spanish.

  • @richartrod I think KPBS also signs on and off with the American and Mexican anthems...

  • This was common for stations that were close to the border and viewd in Canada. WQLN is on Cable in London

  • @Superbook4Eva WNED and WTVS do acknowledge their Canadian viewers, too.

  • @Superbook4Eva You could pick up WQLN from my house in London with a large outdoor antenna. :)

  • What's with that BBS thing at the end? (CFPL-TV perhaps?)

  • Yes, that's from CFPL, I just didn't edit this properly.

  • @Mishi45 I remember that station. Here in Northeast Ohio, back when we had a TV with rabbit ears, we were able to pick that station up from time to time. BBS seemed to air a lot of the same programs that CBS did (e.g. As the World Turns, Guiding Light, etc.) I also remember One O'Clock Live.
