  • beautiful

  • It took me couple of views, to even begin grasping how extremely perfect this live version is.. Wheew..!

  • But foreal, what the fuck is that guy playing?

  • our generations Johnny Cash

  • What do you do with the pieces of a broken heart?

  • Is that Beck playing bass?

  • For my birthday yesterday my wife got me all six m. ward albums. God I love her!

  • anyone have any idea what kind of epiphone that is?

  • That's what I'm talking about! Thanks for posting and long live real songwriters!

  • His singing reminds me of Chan Marshall. Beautiful. And the drumming is amazing

  • @Steamrollergirl71 I was really happy to see this comment! Cat Power and M. Ward are two of my favorite musicians and I've always thought there were similarities in their raspy, soulful singing. I just wasn't sure if anyone else thought the same thing.

  • Omg, Vince Masuka playing with M. Ward!

  • @amazingpos hahahaha

  • Matt is a great songwriter and still very much underrated in my opinion. This, Fuel for Fire and Here Comes the Sun Again are just stunning little songs.

  • He reminds me of the big brother from everybody loves raymond

  • M.ward is a great undergound artist..:)

  • is that like a hubcap i see

  • Music starts at 0:47. Made this for myself cause I'm sick of hitting replay and skipping

  • @bluevalentine9 You are awesome.

  • Superb. I'll leave it at that.

  • this is the first time i saw his face and, he sounds completly, totally different than what he looks like, i imagined him totally different, amazing voice

  • shut up dave,m ward rules

  • @barndotcom Wonderful post! It's rare that someone can say so little and deliver such a divinely weighted message... Especially with musicality that matches.

  • that whammy at the end made it so tight

  • alright i dont want this to sound racist, but im pretty sure that thats the asian guy from dexter

  • personally i dont think letterman deserves m wards time. But divine performance once again from the master ward.

  • 4 people didn't get their questions answered.

  • i love m ward

  • The Sun went down and played for me this Song....

  • Paul can be a douche sometimes.

  • One of the few artists who sounds just as good, if not better, live.

  • Love the mic! Is that real vintage? If it is, I'm so glad that that's how he's achieving the vocal effect.

  • you can tell that when m ward sings to the rhythm...it is his soul that takes a hold of him and unleashes what the shell cant...

  • didn't the drummer also play with bright eyes, around 2007? correct me if i'm mistaken, but they resemble eachother. in any way: stunning performance: i love matt and his music!

  • @issielemons yes, i believe she did she looks familiar

  • M. Ward deserves an a-ward...

  • @jackofalltrades156 you, my friend, are alright.

  • When I first heard this performance when I watched it live I had that drum beat in my head for weeks. That dude on the percussion is just downright incredible. Great, great song.

  • Holy crap -is that Masuka playing drums?

  • I think I like this version more than the studio version.

  • guys so good

  • how can 4 people dislike this?

    i mean... really?

  • it's beautiful

  • Its just perfect

  • I'm still turning people on to this song; a 23 year old Marine at a party the other night; he loved it!

  • LOVE

  • I love his face hahah, and this song

  • crazy.

the only reason i would ever look up this gap toothed idiot is to see m.ward.ha

  • letterman's got great music

  • I love the combo of the jazzy country mixed with that microphone that just sounds like his voice is coming straight out of an old radio broadcast...it definitely is a cool style

  • @Asalamalika

Yeah it really is unique. And the lyrics are a whole different style in themselves... I had to stop typing out this comment because 3:12 and on is just beautiful.

  • Astounding.

  • I have to admit I'll be surprised if Ward ever gets elected, if I happen to be a citizen somehow by then I'll certainly give him a go.

  • Matt Ward is KING.

  • The eternal question, what do you do with the pieces of a broken heart?Exceptional, killer outro, love the young ladies brush work.

  • true talent that can't be denied.

  • What a great song!!!!

  • The lady at the drums is funny lol

  • what kind of microphone is he using?

  • @inertialacoustic one from about 1954, a really old one that distorts real easy

  • @inertialacoustic most likely from an old school PA system

  • "its tout it was a flying sorsaaaaa"

    classic

and the song, wat a chunk of lazy ambient folky baja americana rock

  • Owwwww that was so tight. The people who clicked dislike suck cock.

  • That outro....

  • Johnny Stash

  • I love his facial expressions in this. it's like he's telling a story :)

  • can anyone inform me as to what model epiphone that is?

  • Very subtle difference, but something that is "titled" HAS a name or title, whereas "to entitle" is to GIVE something a name or title. So, after M. Ward entitled his album Post-War, the album is now titled Post-War.

  • for some reason I love the fact that he's using an epiphone.

  • fantastic indeed

  • Marry me, M Ward!!!!!

  • Is it me or M. Ward's thumbs are as long as the rest of his fingers?

  • @luistijerina Actually, everyone's thumbs are as long as their other fingers - the big piece of skin that connects it to the index just makes it appear short.

  • @SportsCarCore True. Then I must say that M. Ward's thumbs look longer than average. He has an awesome fingerpicking technique.

  • @luistijerina I agree, he is one of my favorite guitarist / singers. Wish I could play like he does!

  • David and Paul haven't been funny since the 90's, but M Ward is incredible

  • god damn that's a sexy guitar

  • i like how much he tries to sound like tom waits. its enchanting.

  • is that the reverend horton heat guitar?

  • @dynamitedigums no it isnt

  • M Ward Is God! And he is even more amazing to see live if you get the chance.

  • awesome performance and better in person.

m.ward is amazing - also check out she&him and monsters of folk.

  • @iso1ate plus I'm Wide Awake It's Morning: that appears to be the closest album from his good friend Conor in comparison to his music.

  • this is so original and beautiful!

  • i know, and female bassists too

  • This was nothing short of awesome! I always love the percussion in his songs.

  • Epiphone Country Deluxe. Very cool guitar.

  • man what kind of epiphone is that?

  • Beautiful song, very thoughtful and well written.

  • You can tell he's enjoying this while he's singing it.

I'm guessing everyone else is too :)

  • I love the sound of this song. It's a fusion of old and new sounds. Best band to come out of Portland.

  • @Bajacaliwave ahhh for sure.

  • does any body know what kind of mic he uses to get that sound?

  • It looks like a harmonica mic, that he is singing into.

  • @maxswp that looks like a very old mic, but I guess you can get something similar with a cheap one.

  • very nice

  • Incredible!

  • :)

    Really love this song!

    M'encanta aquesta cançó!

  • Wow. What an outstanding song.

And the drummer gal is beautiful.

  • True. She is beautiful. Are you talking about the bald one?

  • Amazing!

    Thx

  • this song slap.

  • incredible performance!

  • a craftman of the highest order....

  • The Dude is the best of this century.

  • what's the difference

  • Comment removed

  • asian dude is rockin it

  • wow..such a badass performance

  • I figured it out! I need to add an Asian guy straddling a drum to my band. duh!

  • What kind of microphone is that? I've never seen anything like it before!

  • That's because it's probably from like the early-mid 1900's, or at least modeled after one.

  • I could be mistaken but I think it's called a blues harmonica mic. something like that.

  • Entitled can mean the same exact thing as titled. Consult a dictionary.

  • I'd like to smack you, you pedantic twat.

  • really is that necessary,anger issues?yes

  • I came.

  • What an effing voice! God he is awesome

  • hes so original...yet so underappreciated. M. Ward for president!!!

  • @theboywiththecoin He's not really original but whatevs. Still awesome though

  • @jkininji - not original? i imagine based on your use of "whatevs" that you're a young blood. i've been around a long time and i have to tell you - this guy most certainly is an original singer song-writer. hearing his influences in his voice, music and lyrics doesn't take away from that

  • @funkybuck He isn't and he even admits it, all of his music is inspired by 50's music.

  • @funkybuck nothing is original, just some more original than others. Mash-up's may be the least original, then again... Everything is inspired by something else, even the trees and the rocks.

  • @davetoporek lolz

  • doesn't he play with Jenny Lewis and She & Him?

  • great live version!!

  • I agree - this is better than the album version. One of his best songs me thinks. Though I'm really liking The Sandman The Brakeman and me - from the Monsters of Folk album

  • I'm just saying. They aren't always cheap

  • M. Ward and Jim James compliment each other so well, so glad monsters of folk came to be

  • dum dum dum!

  • Wow that bass line is awesome

  • Funny, I just thought the same thing.

  • who gives a flying fuck about how expensive the mic is, he's taking advantage of it beautifully.

  • m.WaRd for presidente

  • holy shit...its ZACH BRAFF!!

  • Mixed with the Cheshire cat

  • that 's an old '50s microphone he sings into. can find them at pawn shop. cheap compared to today's shit.

  • Your wrong about the cheap part buddy.

And old mic like that can cost thousands

  • Comment removed

  • Unique, I like it, a lot. Just when these old bones think music has gone to shit someone like M.Ward turns up. Cool

  • What kind of microphone is he singing through?

  • i don't know but i'd love one. i'm sure they are hella expensive.

  • old, antique. similar to a placid audio copper, which is made today.

  • Why do people vote him negative???? Maybe that is why drenchd like the song...because of his voice's weirdness. I think he has a very special and unique voice...I love it! All the best

  • i just cant decide if i actually like wardy :(

like, he is good.. i can see it.. but i just dont love it

i think something's wrong with me lol

  • keep listening! i always thought that aquired tastes were the most valuable.

  • Nothings wrong with you.

    You just have bad taste.

  • lol aw come on man

    i think he's pretty good

i just prefer conors stuff thats all

  • Im just giving you a hard time.

But Its fine if ya don't like him.

But if you don't necessarily like his voice check out she and him. You have to have respect for that. Or his solo on pretty bird. Or his master work on creating that warm atmosphere he creates on jenny lewis' album acid tongue.

  • nah man i love him but he seems like the type that not EVERYONE loves

  • The guy playing the "truck wheel" is in a band called Black Gold, look em up.

  • Wow. He's the shit. Thats how you do it.

  • One of the most beautiful voices i have ever heard, and a wonderful song.

  • his voice is pure melancholy

  • amazing song. this and Right In The Head are my favorite tracks by them/him.

  • I love this song and I love the drummer girl behind moving her boobs... lol

    Its fantastic

  • Bop Bop Bop:

    Yessiree...

  • M. Ward is a stud, the best musicians come from the west baby =)

  • Nah musicans come from all over

  • I know, but most of the best come from the west

  • I have heard other versions of this song but I think this is my favorite. PS the drummer is so damn hot

  • wow wow wow

love the way he use his right hand, just amazing!

  • He is beautiful in all ways. After seeing him in concert it is difficult to listen to his CDs without going: "He is so much better live."

  • sounds great!! check out "DOUG MAC DONALD BAND"

  • Kind of reminds me of Tom Waits.

    Great stuff.

  • I saw him in concert and he blews my mind. He was so AMAZING!

  • incredible. what a beautiful song and performance.

  • what kind of guitar is he playing? I want to say that its an epiphone, but it looks just like a gretsch

  • i think it is an epiphone - they make a wildkat model that looks just like it, save a small difference in the headstock. the vibrato piece looks funky as hell, too. very cool guitar; tastefully played.

  • epiphone
