  • my dog has got it now he got it from the bunny lodge the poor thing

  • i thought my dog might have heartworms because she has a shorting cough when shes excited. but i think she has kennels cough.

  • Aw

  • Kennel cough cannot be prevented by a vaccine. The bordetella vaccine is worthless. Vets push it because it makes them money. Google "Bordetella Vaccination for Dogs: Fraud and Fallacy".

  • That also sounds exactly like an "inverted sneeze" . That is something like a tick or a hiccup that dogs can develop at any time in their lives. It is often triggered by excitement or stress. It is harmless but it looks distressing. After a dog calms down and relaxes the coughing usually stops.

I'm am sure these people have had their dog to the Vet and know he actually has kennel cough but if your dog has a recurring cough that sounds like he is choking, don't panic, see your Vet.

  • thanks for this video. we just adopted a dog and he has been making a weird noise but i wasn't sure what it was, the shelter said it might be kennel cough, thankfully it sounds nothing like this video, what she has been doing is actually called reverse sneezing!

  • my dog coughs like that too but isn kennel cough contagous cause my other dog doesnt cough like that and they are together in my yard or could my dog have something stuck in his throat i do give him bones

  • it sounds like windy fart

  • my 12 year old grey toy poodle Dinky has had a cough just like this for some time now. i suspet it could be more then a kennel cough. this worries me budget wise. my mom and i are on SSI and what we get monthly is enough for rent groceries and bills. i dont know what i would do if next week we go and he has to have blood tests and xrays or any other exam to figure out what is rong with him. i am so scared that he could die on us before he gets proper diagnosis and treatment.

  • @bambina320 It is also a sign of heart disease. Why not get pet insurance, you can get it really cheap.

  • @bambina320 did you find a solution to this? is Dinky fine now? I hope so. If you find a solution, what was it? :)

  • @n7c7m7p8 No my baby didnt make it. he died Sep 2 2011 :'(

  • @bambina320 I'm so sorry to hear your pet went away. it is maybe better for him as now he's no longer suffering. it's sad though you need to go through suffering now. :( stay strong, and you'll be ok. I hope you're doing well, otherwise with everything else. Stay blessed!!!

  • @n7c7m7p8 Thanks yea its been tough without him. But my mom and I are ok. At least he is not sufforing anymore. And that helps us cope with the loss. Bless you too :)

  • my 4 day old baby has it shes a 6 month old shepherd colli best dog i ever had or owned. most quite peace full baby ever

  • that sounds exactly like my dog

  • My Black Lab had the same cough so we took him to the vet and they gave him cough medicine and a shot and antibiotics but we have never put any of our dogs in a kennel so i don't know how he could have caught it!!!!

  • @blackiesmommy

kennel cough has nothing to do with a kennel

  • i have a horrible cough that sounds similar to this, can humans get it too?

  • Thanks for posting this - it was really helpful in figuring out what was going on with my dog.

  • omg is kennel cough bad!!!?bcuz all my 3 dogs cough lk tht!!!!!please answer back!!!i dnt wnt anything bad 2 happen 2 them:'(

  • @Lilmileycyrus16 take them to a vet!

  • @JayCProductionz Settle down, watch the video.

  • Thank you for posting, this is exactly how my weimaraner sounds and I was pretty positive it was Kennel Cough but this sealed the deal. He goes to the vet tomorrow morning thanks again! Much appreciated

  • The dogs coughing

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I just got a puppy from the SPCA 5 days ago and he started coughing this morning. My cat had come down with a cold (runny eyes, sneezing, etc) so I thought when my pup started with some coughing that's all it was. But I called around to the SPCA and a local vet and they said it sounds like kennel couch. Sure enough, my poor little guy sounds just like this. He's going to the vet as soon as daddy gets home!

  • sounds like a clown horn :D

  • shit, i think my dog has this. were taking her to the vet today, i hope shes okay ;(

  • Oh, I've been there, had the Kennel Cough blues. All four of my dogs got it, though at the time three of them were puppies. Well, they're still puppies now, but they were a lottt younger when they had it. It sucked. They were so subdued. You could tell they really did not feel well at all.

  • who knew such a short video could help me so much, im kinda on a budget and only take my dog to the vet if she has serious symptoms ,so i thought this cough was nothing and was only around for about a week, but after finding out i got it taken care of . thanks

  • @PCPHaunter do you mind sharing what you've done to make your dog feel well? :) I will appreciate it.

  • my dog had kennel cough, it seemed painful!

  • @spursfan112 what was the solution? :)

  • @n7c7m7p8 I don't know we took my dog to the vets and my dad got some medication, I don't remember very well though :)

  • That is what it looks like my dog has. Do the antibiotics make it go away reasonably fast? Sounds painful!

  • My greyhound has Valley Fever and coughs like that.

  • My dog has been coughing but it doesn't sound like this, she's a wesite and I know they are prone to having the 'westie cough' but I've really no idea what its suppose to sound like or if her cough is serious. I don't know if anybody could shed some light on this? It's been going on everyday for the past week or so, and she has been sick a few times, but only like phlegm stuff.

  • my doggie does tht every summer...my dad won't spend the money to take him to the vet so he has to suffer through it :(

  • my dog is doing this as i type this message :(

  • @brandonp619 if your dog is good now, do you mind sharing what was the cure? :)

  • poor dog

  • My dog has been doing this yesterday and today but only like...three "coughs" then a bringing up hairball sound. If it had been a one off i wouldnt worry but now im panicking. She HATES the vets and will snap (shes a rescue dog, dont judge). Muzzles make her panic so im at a loss. Vets on monday but if anyone out there could give me an insight id stop panicking until then x

  • @Girlgerm how's your dog? if she's fine, what was the solution to the problem? :)

  • Thanks for sharing the video, but everyone please note that similar symptoms occur in more severe conditions, e.g. congestive heart failure. Always consult with the vet if your pet has a persistent cough.

  • my puppy is 8 weeks old and is coughing occasionally like he has something in his throat, he has no temp and is not lethargic, so shall i just give him some cough mixture?

  • MY DOG HAS IT TOO.

  • i have a dog, who just got his hair cut and he was the kennel cough & im very worried. So do i take him to the vets?

  • Yes. They will give him some treatment and an injection. If you dont doggy may die.

  • my dog has kennel cough and we r takin him 2 the vet in less then an hour

  • @savanah37615

How did your dog get on after ?

  • he is fine now....he was on meds, but they made him sick,so we took him off of them. Now he is playful and isnt caughing :)

  • @savanah37615

ohh wow that had to off been a bad, having that cough and then being sick from the meds .. he is one strong cookie. Im glad he is doing well now and back to full strenth :)

  • yep :) he is running around and jumpin and all his normal stuff.....like cahsing my kitten!

  • @savanah37615 would you remember the meds he was on? sorry to hear they kind of messed him even worst. :( grrr... that's what I'm affraid of vets... I might get one that's irresponsible like yours.

  • @n7c7m7p8 No, it was a few years ago.

  • omg sameee! i asked the breeder if he had kennel cough and shes like no no no! that lying whore! anyways im going to the vet. thank u so much!

  • Weve just got our puppy from a kennel and this is what he does, but he chokes at the end of the cough like he's got something stuck in his throat, thank you for uploading this as he is going the vets now xx

  • Same with my dog.

  • even with the shot they can get it, mine did and they were vaccinated only 4 months ago, it depends on the strain of the virus ...sigh ...it is hell :(

  • our dog is from a kennel place and he coughs like this pukes up on the street when walking him but i dont know how to cure it? Help

  • @BouncyBabiie did you find a solution for this yet? would you mind sharing it, if you did? :)

  • i just got a rescue dog from babington rescue and he has kennal cough and he gags and it seems he may be sik!!!

  • my dog hasn't been in a kennel and doesn't hang around other dogs but she is coughing and throwing up but nothing comes up most of the time

  • I recently boarder my dog in a kennel in illinois while i was away to canada, he started making sounds when we brought him home, i have a video on my page and i'm really worried, do you think it's kennel cough :(

  • My puppy has kennel cough and she always looks like she throws up saliva or something like that. We thought she had a stomach ache till she started coughing. So we took her to the vet and she was dehidrated(or how ever you spell it) and she had a fever. My poor girly girl. :(

  • Sounds like she had a bit of congestion and I'm not sure if the high temperatre causes the dehydration or the dehydration causes the high temperature...but once you get some medication to help the symptoms, my dogs got their appetite and energy back. Sometimes kennel cough is mild and goes away on it's own, but sometimes they do need a little help to kick the bug, especially if they are very young or very old.

  • I'm sorry ;( cuz i love animals!<3

    I REALLY LOVE THEM

  • that poor doggy. our new puppy might have kennel cough.

  • It s very common in puppies, because they have no immune system, yet. They can pick up anything before they have their innoculations. Younger puppy had it when we got him, but a trip to the vet and some medicine got him on the road to recovery and even though we had to delay Chole meeting him, the first introduction went very well!

  • Sorry ran out of room. are there other signs to kennel cough?

  • I only noticed the cough with chloe, but other ppl tell me that their dogs got running nose/brought up phlegm with their kennel cough. My dogs have never shown these symptoms, tho. The rest of the time, Chloe will cough when she drinks water, gets too excited, but the cough doesn't sound like it does in this video. That's how we knew when she got kennel cough, cos it was different from her usual 'Chloe cough'!

  • oh also my new chihuahua mix , got her from the streets. i did seperate her from my other dogs for about 2 weeks just to be sure she wasnt coughing, vomiting or had diarrhea as the vet said that was the safest way to know. they eat and drink fine, no lethargy and no other signs of being sick. they are all vaccinated thats for sure. she just started on the choking weird sound last night too. after she jumped around. she's really young about 1 so she has alot of energy.

  • My dog which was adopted by my brother awhile back was left in the yard and no attention really payed to her but when he gave her to us bcuz of her barking issues i noticed a few things wrong with her, problem is we cant afford the vet bills right now. But one things she does is cough like a choking cough but its not too often and it seems to happen when she gets very excited. The other dog my brother has i've noticed never coughs and they were together for a year. could this be something else?

  • Some dog breeds such as the chihuahua are prone to "reverse sneezing". The only way to tell for sure is to go to the vet.

  • Aww! poor baby. Mine has just gone through the same. I have video of her sick and 1 hour later after cough mixture. Looks like your dog is very well behaved and will not walk on the rug even when she is siiiick:(

  • No, they're both allowed on the rug (it's not one of those expensive ones and we've had ours years, so it's no big deal,) but Chloe likes the feel of the cold floor on her feet! Mine were both better after they'd had their cough medcne, but before, they'd really struggle at times to clear th congestion and the coughing irritated their airways...I felt so helpless, watching them struggle like that, not knowing what to do to help them!

  • If you don't mind my asking what did you give them? My 2 year old Beagle keeps having Kennel Cough, but the vet said there was nothing he could personally do about it.....

  • We've noticed that Chloe as been good these past few months, since I switched her diet and altered which dietary suppliments we gave her. We now have her on a BARF diet called Primal and a multi vitamin. Her immne system must be benefitting from it, because she hasn't been ill even half as much. But yes, kennel cough is much like flu is to humans. The jab protects them for months against the worst strains, but I guess there are so many that it's inevitable to come down with it sometimes.

  • Wow I messed that last comment up something fierce.. he was 5 years old, not 2.... unfortunately for him, kennel cough, seizures, and meningitis got the best of him and we had to have him put down yesterday (4/8). I just wish I could've caught everything sooner than what I did.... he was still a young dog yet and didn't deserve to go just yet....

  • So sorry to hear about your loss, but sometimes things progress too suddenly to cure and in that case, preventing further suffering is the right thing to do. It is heart-breaking, but the best thing you can do for your dog, given the circumstances. Best wishes to you and your family!

  • I aso find it helps to bring them into a steamy room....I have a facial steamer, so I turn that on in my bathroom for 10-15 minutes, before I bring my dog in. The coughing and distressed respiratory sounds quieten down and sometimes, my dogs even fell asleep, they relaxed that much! A vet may also be able to prescribe a stronger decongestant than just cough medicine, but my dogs have never needed anything stronger.

  • that happens to my brother's dog once in a while...but it's rarely; but it hasn't happen anymore... my brother is stupid he doesn't take the dog to the VET.! :(

    so sad...

  • can kennel cough kill your dog and what kind of dog is it?

  • Chloe is a long-legged jack russell terrier. It doesn't kill, but can cause scarring of the lung tissue, which can result in permanent respiratory difficulties. Although not deadly, this is something you really don't want to happen. It is hard enough listening to your dog go through a short period of kennel cough...I don't think I could stand to see her have breathing difficulties and discomfort all the time!

  • my shih-tzus would get this all the time when we would board them. so sad for them.

  • Yes, the first time Chloe got it, it was from when she boarded in the kennels...But now she seems to get it at least twice a year...and she hasn't boarded since! I'm working on building up her immune system. I've heard it described as being like the canine equivalent of the flu...You can immunize against the common, worst kinds, but not all forms.

  • My dog had that too when I first got him

  • I've heard that it's rife in puppy kennels & even breeder's homes, simply because puppies have not built up their immune systems (kinda like when your kids start at school and bring home everything going!)

  • Thank you so much for sharing this. My dog was borded last week for the first time for 3 nights. He has just started coughing like this today (a week later). I'm taking him to the vets tonight as I am sure this is what he has. I got him vaccinated too but it's not 100% I know. :( Hope your dog is feeling better now, poor baby! xxx

  • yea my new dog has this. she was abused its soo sad her paws r hurt cause she was in a cage full of her own pee, she'skinny as heckk, but shes the sweetest.

  • Chloe was like that; all skin and bones, when we found her. Her first owner didn't even hae her on puppy food, only dry kibble. She had issues about food for a while and used to find and hoard things, like dead animal carcasses! : P

  • my dog has got something like this now, he was in a kennel for the night the other day. i feel sorry for him but he still acts as if nothing is wrong (apart from the coughing / choking noise). should i let it pass, like human would with a cough or a cold, or should i take him to the vet. i know im not supposed to let him near any other dogs. i dont know what to do coz iv never had a dog before!

  • If the coughing is bad, I put a hot shower on and sit with them in the steamy bathroom...The steam seems to help soothe the inflamed airways. The phlegm breaks up and the coughing eases.

  • @ckylisa did you find a solution for your dog? do you mind if you share it...? :)) Thank you so ooooo much.

  • my chuhuahua has that right now and its so sad=(..... she can't sleep and neither can our whole family=(.......

  • It's just miserable for everyone, isn't it....You so wish there was something you could do, but feel so helpless...Just give them love and attention. And sitting with your dog in a steamy bathroom seems to help with the worst of the congestion and airway inflamation. (I got this idea from when my little cousins were ill with asthma! Also seemed to work with my dogs!)

  • Thank you for the advice but it's too late. My beloved Baby of 12 years past away 4 days after her birthday=(

  • @glayfanatic1 what happened to your dog? how did she die? :( was it because of this strange cough? I have tears in my eyes and it's soooo sad.

  • @glayfanatic1 did you find a solution to your dog cough?! :) would you mind telling me what that was? :) my dog goes through the same symptoms now.

  • my dog cocoa just got this. =( he coughs so much but hes feeling better now. i feel so bad that dogs can get this its like getting the flu only 5000000000 times worse. can you imagine coughing like this allllllllll day long for like 2 weeks. your head would xplode.

  • All of my Pets stay up-to-date on any & all vaccines, treatments, & check-ups. However, even with that in mind, & despite having given both of my Dogs their Bordetella Drops before boarding them for 3 weeks, my youngest Dog (1 Yr, 3 Mo. Old Husky), came down with Kennel Cough. I've boarded her 4 times already in the last year, with no Problems, & my 6 Yr Old JRT has been boarded since a Puppy (Minimum of Twice a Year) with No Cough ever. I set a Vet appt. for my Husky ASAP, which is tom.

  • Yeah, you only need 1 dog in the kennels to have it, then many will also come down with it. I'm trying to build up my dog Chloe's immune system, as she seems to come down with it all the time. I'e got her on dietary suppliments and I'm giving her a BARF diet called Primal. Hopefully, this will help!

  • Yeah, it's a good idea to keep an eye on them and take them back if it doesn't clear up. My gods have just had their vaccine and are a little sliffly/coughy, but not vey much. The vet explained that it might happen, but they seems to be fighting it off and not getting any worse, now.

  • Our dog got a vaccination for it, but was kenneled up while she was fixed. The vet said it could be a slight kennel cough from the vaccination, and that it should go away. Keep in mind that vaccinations can make your dogs a little sick, since they are actually injecting weakened bacteria/viruses.

  • thanks for this video! my dog has been coughing like this for a few days now and i didn't know what was going on and the vet said he was fine (of course he didn't cough when i brought him there). thanks again!

  • Yep, they do tend to stay silent, once you get them to the vet, don't they?! I use my digital camera to catch the coughing on a film clip, which I then take to the vet's with me. That way, the vet can be sure of the symptoms, even if the dog behaves normally while it is there!

  • does this happen often with smaller dog. my dog heaves like this every now and then but

now it has been going on for about 2 hours

  • My JRT in this clip does occasionally heave when she drinks water too fast, but never as badly as this. We realised that something was wrong when it got much loader, happenened every time she drank/ate and got excited. Her throat was sometimes so irritated that she'd throw up.

  • If this has happened suddenly, then your dog may just have an abraded throat, but if this has been getting worse for some time or if you know your dog has been in contact with a dog who has later been diagnosed with kennel cough, I'd take him/her to the vet to get checked out. Better safe than sorry! If left untreated, it can cause scarring of the lungs that may lead to respiratory problems.

  • And they've just come down with it again! I'm taking them back once they've recovered and I'll INSIST on a vaccine. And that should cover them while their in the kennels for three days in July...I HOPE!

  • The thing is, it's been a few months since my dog recovered and my vet told me that I wouldn't need to vaccinate my dogs until two weeks before they went in the kennels. She said they'd probably only contract kennel cough there, not in everyday interactions with other dogs they meet on their walks...

  • Kennel Cough Vaccine (Bordatella) is only effective for 6-months....The vaccine is part of every "annual" vaccination program, but most dog owners are never told about the effective duration of this particular vaccine....You can buy the vaccine OnLine from VetSupply companies and it is simple to use....Doxycycline Hyclate is the antibiotic I used on 9-of-my-18 dogs that became infected with Kennel Cough.

  • Thanks! That's very useful info. I'm going to insist my dog get it, because it is rife where I live (Singapore.)

  • @asapice1 would you mind telling me how you use it? How much of this Doxycycline hyclate 100 mg tablet would you give your dog? So glad to hear you treat your dogs. Good for you and I'm proud of your hard work with all 18 dogs. :)

  • is she getting better

  • She's been good these past few months, since I switched her diet and altered which dietary suppliments we gave her. We now have her on a BARF diet called Primal. Her immne system must be benefitting from it, because she hasn't been ill even half as much.

  • how did u treat it?

  • We took her to the vet. It should not be left, because they don't always heal by themselves and it can cause scarring of the lung tissue. They can have breathing problems if it gets to that stage.

  • oh ok thxs =]

my dog has to stay at the hospital because it has low sugar from that

  • My cat sounds like that... weird.

  • Your cat might just be bringing up a hairball...Not sure if they can get kennel cough, but I don't think so. Never heard of it in felines...
