The US sold arms to Iran in exchange for money which they used to fund the Contras, a were group of fascist guerrillas involved with the drug trade many of whom were ex-secret police for the US supported Somoza regime. Oliver North and John Poindexter took the fall for things and claimed the president had no knowledge of it. They were charged but never sentenced or punished.
