@psychomike443 Wasn't Cavies...they weren't out west in 82. To the viewer's right of VK is Freelancers, then (I think) Valley Fever. To the left is someone I don't recognize (might be San Jose Raiders), then I think Blue Knights (I might have that order reversed). Cavies were in DeKalb, IL on this show date.
The lineup for P-West in 82 was (in order of finish), BD, SCV, Freelancers, VK, Valley Fever, SJ Raiders, Kingsmen, BK, BDB. (thank you, Fromthepressbox, com !)
I remember in '83 the VK DMs placing TV Dinners in front of the other DMs during the Retreat. Most of the DMs stayed at attention and didn't touch the food. But a few of them went for the early dinner. 2COOLVK!
I think that was part of a long time with VK-BD relationship..I was in VK in '89..us contras shared vodka and cigars with BD during retreat..brings back memories :)
Man, that's great. Was that Gary Zinter setting up that umbrella????? Freaking awesome. I remember how pissed off a lot of people were back then about VK's irreverence though. Too funny. That made my day.
No. That's Steve Sanger setting up the umbrella. I have another clip from a different show where the BD DM's go up and take VK's cokes while SkyRyders DM reads a newspaper.
I didn't have a clue about any negative feelings. Then again I was on the field. We really knew we had something when we started to get groupies wanting to buy our uniforms off our backs after the shows...
I made the video a number of years ago while I was marching in Blue Devils. My dad was the one that shot the video and that's my mom laughing. I have the full clip and a couple of other BD / VK retreat clips.
When my brother and I were deciding what corps we wanted to try out for, after the Vagabonds went into the crapper, I was ready to go VK. My father, who is a corps purist forbid it, so I dropped out completely.
I saw them do that very routine when I was in High School. Very cool. They had a cooler with drinks and one by one the other drum majors gave in and went over for a handshake and a drink, the very last was the guy from Phantom. He eventually joined in.
If anyone from DCI ever comes on here, BRING BACK FULL RETREATS or reduce ticket prices. This silly 'international' song is a pathetic substitute for one of the greatest traditions in the activity.
God, this is a *scream*! :-D Especially since it was, of all other units, the ultra-precise *Blue Devils'* drum majors who "took a stroll down to the beach"! Thanks so much for a wonderful moment --- agree totally that we need to see this kind of spirit brought back into drum corps!
I sure miss the Velvet Knights... What in the world ever happened to them. Listen to the fans laugh and cheer in this video. We need a drum corp like that again who isnt so serious, but everyone cant wait to see what they do...
Are you serious!!! I am so excited!!! Thats so wonderful. Laughter is such a great emotion to react to Drum Corp with. I sure they keep with the VK tradition. I love their 92 show. Are they going to be in Anaheim?
Remember when DCI used to actually be fun??!!

Oops, sorry - I didn't express that very well! I just remember that at that time VK was a bit 'controversial' among the more old-school set.

Only a bit?!
That corps was nonsense! And when they came back... still nonsense! Love it.

I like how the BD DM takes a full 21 seconds to set up an umbrella

Possibly the best DCI video I've ever seen.

PLEASE post it.
I'd also like to see the clip of the Blue Devils giving the VK DM's a lift on their cart (sitting in their beach chairs), on the way to retreat.

I heard about this this summer from some of the guys in my corps. Apparently at the age out ceremony this year, the VK age-outs did the same thing xD

By drink do you mean beer?

Well, we assumed it was a soda, seeing that that the competition took place in a high school stadium.

naw, you just need VK to pull them out....with a flourish.

You would never see the Blue Devils do something like that these days. I love this video.
Gernads 4 years ago
Yes you would. BD is one of the most chill corps out there.

My wife-to-be and I were at DVC that night, too. She was in the Northgate and UC Davis bands, so knew a few of the Blue Devils.
I seem to remember Devils, Vanguard, Velvet Knights, Freelancers, Mandarin and the Devils B and C corps.
I had seen the Bridgemen in 1980, along with Spirit of Atlanta, and was enthralled by the Velvet Knights.
I'm glad you kept for posterity a video of the palm tree, the folding chairs and the Devils post-performance salute. That's great stuff!
