  • Hi Katie, you'll need to restore the network default settings. Hpsetup is the default Ad Hoc network for this printer. If you've had it set up to another wireless network, or tried to set it up, than that setting has changed. Restore network defaults is an option in the front panel settings

  • I have the same printer in the video and am trying to set it up to print wirelessly with my Mac. However, HPSETUP does not show up in my airport menu. Any suggestions? (The radio is turned on, I have also tried turning the printer off and then on again.)

  • worked perfectly thank you, i think the issue a lot people have is knowing that the ssid has to be your broadband connection and password on some peoples network is a WPA not a WEP. you can download hp setup from hp website

  • Thank full so thankfull. After a week of dispair with Epsons 545. I switched back to HP.

  • After turning on the radio, there was no HP Setup option in drop-down menu. Help?

  • Does it work the same for an HP Photosmart C6380? Having a hard time with it.

  • @Tsukareiteimasu You don't need to do this for your product. You can set your printer up to the wireless network through the printer's control panel.

Follow these steps to connect the product to your wireless WLAN 802.11 network. Press the Setup button on the product control panel. Press the Down Arrow button to highlight Network , and then press OK . Press the Down Arrow button to highlight Wireless Setup Wizard , and then press OK

  • @HPTechUS

The Wireless Setup Wizard searches for networks, and then displays them in a list. Press the Down Arrow button ( ) to highlight the network name (SSID) that you gathered in the previous step, and then press OK . Press the Down Arrow button ( ) to highlight Infrastructure , and then press OK . Press the Down Arrow button ( ) to highlight WEP encryption or WPA encryption , and then press OK .

Just follow the prompts and let the wizard complete.

  • @HPTechUS After that, just run the software and let it install the software and setup the printer on your Mac.

  • @HPTechUS Thank you for the help! Unfortunately I haven't been able to get a connection yet. The trouble starts with the HP printer not finding the wireless network name and when I try to add it manually it still won't connect. I'm beginning to think our router might not support the printer it's a Netgear RangeMax Wireless Routher WPN824 v3. I'll keep trying we'll see what happens.

  • NOT WORKING :(

  • this worked perfectly! Thank you!

  • Thanks so much for this informative video!

  • You are a GENIUS!!!! I relocated with the same MacBook and Printer using FiOS... Couldn't figure out how to re-incorporate (if that is a word) my MacBook, Printer and new wireless FiOS router at my new location. After you watching your video, it was as easy as 1, 2, 3... I can't thank you enough!!!!! THANKS!!!

  • This worked. hp officejet J4680, imac osx 10.5.8, verizon fios. My issue below was solved by going back and forth between the hpsetup and router SSID in the airport tab. The hpsetup did not appear on my airport network list until I accessed it manually on the printer. Could not have done it without this video - thanks.

  • I have an officejet J4680, imac osx 10.5.8 and verizon fios. I just got a new router and am trying to reestablish connection as per your video. I was able to find the hpsetup and print the network config page. When I enter the URL from the network config page I get an error message that the server where this page is stored is not responding. It connected once, but I lost contact when I tried to open the tab. What do I do? I can't get the page to come up again.

  • Helped me with the wireless setup for my new 1525nw! Very informative. I figured it out once I got through 2:32 minutes of video. Thank you!

  • awsome video great help

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH! GREAT HELP!

  • MBP to HP J4680 All-in-one.

  • All going swimmingly until the "select network" step. I get a prompt in the HP Setup Assistant box: "Device Not Connected -- To configure the network settings of the selected device, please connect it temporarily via USB. The device can be disconnected from the USB once the network settings are transferred." Okay, but I am, in fact, connected via USB, so this is stumping me.

  • Big help. Thanks so much!

  • lol your voice sounds like Gabe Newell

  • Thanks for this walkthrough! I was unsure that running setup from the CD had worked after buying a new printer, now we're up and running! I didn't need to do the ad-hoc stage as I'd already connected the printer to our wireless network from a PC.

    Long live HP :-)

  • This happens usually due to 1 of 2 reasons. 1. the network name you are trying to set the printer to is not spelled EXACTLY as it is. The SSID is case sensitive. 2. The network security settings you are entering in the HPSETUP embedded web page isn't correct. Another thing to check is what band you are broadcasting on. Some routers are capable of using 5ghz, the HP printer will not function on 5ghz, you'll need to put the router on 2.4 ghz. (Your router maker will have that info)

  • @HPTechUS I have the HP Photosmart Printer C4500 All in One series. I'm using Netgear touter, and I have OS X. I can get up to the web browser part, but when I print the second Network configuration page, nothing changes like it's supposed to. The URL is still the same. I was supposed to change from hpsetup to my main network, right?

  • IT'S. NOT. WORKING. :(

  • @JazzySnazzy09 What printer? What OS and what router are you using?

  • thanks this helped alot

  • This video is great. It gives me a much better understanding of the process. The only problem that I am having is that my computer does not recognize the printer. I type in the URL for the embedded website and it can't find it. I am running OSX 10.6.7. The printer is an OfficeJet 6510 Wireless. My wireless router is an Airport Express. If you have any advice, I'll love you forever!

  • @cmuberti what the url you are getting from the config page?

  • @HPTechUS: 192.168.1.149. Also, one of the hp setup/utilities has an "open printer webpage" button. That fills in the hostname -- as in HP0C9F90.local. That doesn't work either. Thanks!!!

  • @cmuberti OK, what wireless network are you on when you are trying to connect to your printer?

  • @HPTechUS I've tried it from within hpsetup and my own wireless network.

  • @cmuberti Are you using the software on CD or from the hp site? (Use the downloaded software from hp) If you have a USB cable, use that initially, and the software will ask you if you want to setup the printer for a wireless network. Check that box, and follow the prompts. You'll need to know the Name of your wireless network and the password is you have one setup. This video is great for those times when the usb setup of wireless doesn't work, but the 10.6 software available on hp is OK.

  • @HPTechUS I did that today. I tried it with the driver that came with Snow Leopard and then I downloaded the drivers from hp. I started with the USB connection and set up the printer for a wireless network. When that didn't work, I went online for help and found your video. I am going to check the hp website and make sure that I downloaded the 10.6 software. Wish me luck and thank you again!

  • i think i am understanding whats going on. i got passed the apply page

  • mac os x version 10.5.8/ hp officejet j4680 All-in-one

  • @15CHancHO15 What is the SSID listed on your network configuration page for the 4680? Have you downloaded and run through the software installation from HP dot com?

  • @15CHancHO15 I am sending a link to a walkthrough on what to do to get your J4680 on your network.

  • the "key" where you setup the printer on the hp page before you click appl. also my mac does not recognize hpsetup on the airport menu

  • @15CHancHO15 What printer are you setting up? and what OS are you using? That will help.

  • how do i find the "key"? What is the "key"?

  • @15CHancHO15 Are you talking about the password for your wireless network? If not, tell me where in the video I mentioned it, and I'll figure out what I am talking about.

  • BRILLIANT! Followed the instructions in the video (which wasn't easy for me because I'm a guy), and it worked perfectly. I can finally print wirelessly from my Mac! Thank you!

  • HELP... I ran the test and it says no problems everything is good but when i try to print it says that it is not online

  • FANTASTIC!!! Very impressed by HP for this :P

  • Hopefully you can help here.....When i click on the networking tab in the wireless config page it asks me for a user name and p/w. I've been told it's one i've put in, and i've tried all possible combinations, but to no avail. Using my wireless login and password does not work here. Is there a way to access the login and p/w or can i simply reset it? Thanks

  • beauty full instruction for configuration of printer over wireless network

  • Failure, I have a wireless printer with no radio and nothing comes up in my airport thing, therefore I can't configure it! Do you know whats wrong

  • I have setup my hp c4750 printer through USB it is all setup and i have finished the installer. Now whenever i turn it on it just shows on the screen loading and i cant select printing or scanning or copying please help.

  • This is very useful. It is a pity that the Mac OS X software does such a poor job of it in the first place, or that the wireless module is such a POS (as evidenced by the difficulties people have in getting it to work), but that doesn't detract from the abilities of the team who put together this video which is pitch perfect. Thank you.

  • i've set up the printer - it is connected to the wireless network. i am able to scan wirelessly, and print the test page of the printer wirelessly but when i try to print documents, it says the printer is offline and the widgets say the same as they do not show ink levels unless i'm connected via usb - any fixes for why i cannot print documents?

when i go to the bonjour icon in safari, it shows the printer but when i click it, i cannot see the printers internal page either

    thanks in advance!

  • Which printer do you have? And what OS?

  • This all worked up to the point where I put my wireless network information into the setup page (I have a WPA/PSK network, so I used the EAP/WPA setting on the page..is that correct?) but now when I print the config page, all that I see is "Scanning" under status, even though it shows the SSID correctly. The router is only a few feet away, so what is the problem? I used to be able to connect with my old router; it is since i changed routers that this problem occurred. Using an HP PSC 2510.

  • Scanning means it isn't connected. Usually this is because the passphrase isn't correct, or the protocol is not correct. Try it again, and select a different protocol. I don;t have a 2510 handy, so I can't tell what protocol options there are in the Embedded Web Server.

  • @HPTechUS I tried also using the WEP protocol, but there were multiple fields to enter password info into, and I only have one password. Entering the password into the first WEP field let to it telling me the password was the wrong length.

I went to my router config page (it's a netgear router), and my security is listed as: WPA-PSK(Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key).

Given this, is the PSC 2510's EAP/WPA option the right option?

  • how do you find the authentication? the one right before your password?

  • The authentication for your Mac? It should pop up when you first start the installation of the software. That password will be the same one you use to log into your Mac at startup.

  • I did all this, and then i went to my hp devide manager and it said that my printer wasnt installed (i had to re-install/update software since i upgraded to snow leopard), and i installed the the software again and now my device manager app is completly gone. Can i download it again for free?

  • The HP Device manager isn't included in the newest software for Snow Leopard as it isn't compatible. As with any new OS, there are some changes to the way printers function within SL. I can't post links in the comments, but if you search for Snow Leopard on the HP website, you'll find a few docs that can walk you through how to use your Printer in SL.

  • Thank you very much for this. I called HP and they knew Jack!

  • no need for hp driver download update - your instructions worked even though my printer is not supported by snow leopard. THANKYOU!

  • after i installed snow leopard i found that it didn't support my hp photosmart 3310. mac support helped me connect via usb but wouldn't support wireless setup. hp support won't help unless i purchase an extended service plan. do you know if a driver download will be available eventually on the website for my printer/os ?

  • This is much clearer than the instructions on the HP website. Thanks!

  • Before we start chucking printers out the window. Let's see if we can't get it running. We fully support Snow Leopard for about 95% of our products. What is the product to have exactly?

  • you lost me at the 'turn on the radio' bit. I have a 2610 - where is the radio?????

I am so angry with HP because it won't support Snow Leopard. This is my last attempt to use the printer wirelessly with my lap top -- before I throw it out the window and hope it hits an HP exec.

  • Oh my god. This is so easy. I have had a printer I got free with my MacBook that I didn't really need for two months and haven't set it up because the instructions are so ridiculous and I didn't want to install the crazy HP software. I installed snow leopard and it was talking about automatically downloading printer drivers I decided to set it up. I did it all with no HP software mucking up my computer. Awesome.

I can even scan wirelessly. Why did HP have to make it so confusing before this?

  • Glad it's working for you. We did a lot of work with Apple to try and get the setup as seamless as possible. Trying to cover all the possible scenarios for wireless and wired network installs can get things so bogged down that it does get real confusing.

  • this would be useful if it took into account the fact that my printer keeps deciding to go into dumbass mode right after i turn it on...

  • Sorry to hear that. Which printer is it. And what are the symptoms of "dumbass" mode?

  • thans for this vid its the best ever.i had my hp c4380 series printer for a year now and was frustrated that i couldnt get it to print wirelessly and now i can because of you thanks so much...

  • Excellent! Glad to have helped

  • Thanks! This video was a huge help.

  • I am happy it helped.

  • Just what I need. I have been looking at getting this exact printer for over a month now, and I found a good deal on it, so I am going to pounce on it today. Glad to see it works flawlessly with OS X.

I will be setting this up in a mixed network, with one machine running Vista, one running XP, and my main machine, running OS X. I will configure it with OS X first, and then connect to it on the other machines. I assume this is the correct way to do it?

  • OK, I thought I set it up right, but apparently not. I can send it a test page OK, but anything else, and I get "Communication Failure: The computer is no longer able to communicate with your printer. Turn the printer off, check your printer connections and check for printer errors, and turn the printer back on."

This happens with every document, but I can get it to work if I pause and resume the job a few times. I have been looking around, and the only solution it seems is to reinstall...

  • Sorry about the late response. What printer do you have?

  • It's a J4680 just like in the video. But right now, I don't have a mac running on my network. I might soon, but it's a different machine. Will let you know if it works or not.

  • Look on the hp site for an update in the Win XP section of the J4680 software and downloads . It addresses communication issues like this. The link to the Mac update is missing.

  • Also, if you are using Snow Leopard, right now the software to use the HP templates isn't available. Should be finished pretty soon though. It'll be on the hp site once it's completed.

  • Yeah, I got the update for Xp through HP update.

The mac that is currently running has 10.4.11 on it, so everything should work perfectly. Though I do plan on getting a machine capable of running snow leopard eventually.

  • Did you have the update before?

  • This video has made me very happy. Finally, I am able to print wireless.

  • Glad to hear it.

  • what if the wireless printer doesnt have a screen?

  • Than you will need to print off a configuration page using the built in self test button press combinations. Typically, this is done by holding the power button and pressing the cancel button once and than letting go of both buttons. (Also called a 10-tap test).

  • Clarification: You should have the printer power on before you start a 10-tap test. If you still have questions, let me know what model you have and I can look it up. or you can go to the support forums on the HP website and ask there. We have a dedicated Mac forum for all of us.

  • If this doesn't work for you, than please go to hp com/go/support, enter your product name and search for "self-test" or "configuration page" or "tap-test"

  • I have just set up a J6480 printer (with no problems) to work wirelessly with my PC desktop. I would now like to set things up so that I can print wirelessly with my Macbook. I have a wireless router also #1 - before I begin should I first install the HP software from the CD on the MAC just as I did on the PC? and #2 - If II then follow the above instructions will I get the end result that I'm looking for? Both my MAC laptop and my PC desktop communicating wirelessly with the printer.

  • Just make sure that you have your Airport on before you run the software. All you have to do is run the software on your Mac. After the License agreement, it will search for the printer, when it finds it (It will be listed with a connection of Bonjour) , simply click on it to highlight , and than click on continue to finish the rest of the installation process.

  • I should add that you need to make sure that the PC, the J6480 and the Mac are all on the same wireless network.

  • I agree with most of the comments here HP tech guy, it's a good video. It'd be nice to have it a little clearer as far as quality. I like the way you broke this down into three sections, makes it easy to understand. I hope you keep posting these types of things. I would rather refer people here than to your godawful phone support. If you want any suggestions for other videos let us know.

  • Starts out helpful but the video is not clear and critical issues such as what the key is and where to find it and what the SSID are (I imagine my network name) are missing so instructions are to no avail. Sorry. Won't help unless you are intimately familiar with computer networking. Try again cowboy.

  • It tells you right up front that you need to bring those things to the table. How in the world do you expect a tech support agent for a printer to know your SSID and your secuity password? If you don't know your security key for your own network or the SSID of that network, perhaps you should talk to the person who set it up for you. Don't bag on people who are actually trying to help you. its rare these days that a company goes out of it's way to try and reach people who may need assistance.

  • Informative & understandable, step-by-step, clear instructions.

  • Very useful video for HP customers. The instructions are very comprehensive but the video is not clear. It would be nice to capture what appears on the computer screen using different software tools than filming what appears on the computer screen
