Just so people making comments here are aware, the US told Fischer not to play a match for profit in Yugoslavia because it would violate UN sanctions on doing business with that genocidal regime.
Fischer, while a brilliant chess player, was a class-less asshole, unrepentant bigot, and self-loving douchebag. Anyone who takes his "political convictions" seriously should be ashamed of themself.

Very well done, The USA must not think they can overrule the world! Everywhere they came they have left rubbish, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq. The worse off all is they consist of just 4% of the World-population, but they are consuming 25% of all the energy. That all forms the reason, why they are so hated in many countries. The attack in 2001 on the Twin Tower can just be seen as a reaction on their imperalism! Hopefully they wake up and learn from what other are telling them.

Stop comparing chess grandmasters...they're all great. Does it really matter if one is better than the other? I mean, in my opinion, Paul Morphy was the greatest ever, but not because he can beat Kasparov (as he probably cannot), but because he was so much ahead of his peers in his time. In the same way, Bobby Fischer was ahead of his peers in his time and Kasparov is in our time.

He made a mistake there, he could calculate 10-25 moves ahead, but he couldn't calculate the downhill path he would be taking if he ignored an executive order. It wasn't prudent, he should have compromised with them or had the tournament somewhere else, he would have saved his fortune and he might still be alive today.

It violated some law that made it illegal to engage in economic activities in Yugoslavia.
Following the match (He won and should have got his millions!), the department obtained an arrest warrant for him. Fischer remained wanted by the United States government for the rest of his life and never returned to U.S.

no, Bobby was ordered not to play because he ignored a U.S. order not to interact with one of the european countries, i think it was yugolavia. Bobby broke the law when he went to that country tio play chess and now he was a fugitive never to return to the U.S.

Fischer vs. Kasparov would be so long and drawn out that I think Kasparov would simply outlast Fischer in years lived (supposing they're both in their chess prime). I'm American so obviously I'm going with Fischer, and I enjoy watching his games more than Kasparov's.
