im kind of surprised that graphics was the reason DIRT 2 was higher than race 07....I dont think it was half a sim than Race 07 + all expansions. Th eprice tag of DIRT 2 is the same price tag as Race 07 + all expansions the quadruple the amount of content in Race. I dont feel like DIRT 2 is a sim at all, its a sega rally arcade fun game. Race 07 is wheel to wheel hardcore 20+ laps and pitstops racing with tracks that are VERY close to the real thing.
Another sim with an excellent driving school is Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed. I know it's old but it's still one of the best racing simulators ever. The Driver Factory (racing school) has excellent lessons and explanations that greatly help you understand driving techniques and behaviour. I still play it.
i heard that in dirt2 that the cars feel like your driving on ice, or something. everything is very slipery. Is that partually true? its probably gana be hard to drive since its all offroad, but u still need to get quite a bit of traction.
Please make an episode for us people that dont wont to spend hundreds of dolars on computer stuff just to play iRacing!and please show the minumin computer spec for iRacing
That virtual RC is awesome. I played that demo for a long long time. Just not worth getting the full version because I'm not much of an RC fan, but it's great for anyone that loves RC cars.
I don't know if it was mentioned somewhere but at cca 07:28, you mention that the S3 license is under 40 dollars, while there is only S2 at the moment. I assume it was just a mistake. :)
1 for Cost Vs futures (quantity of tracks, cars, quality , etc,etc is not rely important ). 1 for simplicity (smart Interface, Fun, populated, race events organizations & community , etc. 1 for generals (Specifics race categories, cover all this or some of this). note: If i am not a real live racer for example i am not interested on the track realism more then the race driver competition realism.
y dont only do 4 or 5 categories: 1 for simulation of environment (physics, sound as quality, Tracks realism, damage, etc). 1 for simulation of race driver( force feedback, sound as feedback, multiplayer off & online performance, car to car crash or touche simulation, grass & sand GRIP simulation, race rules and anti cheering, etc) PART 1
Great show again. I like the weighted rating scale as it is. I think all the different departments are important. However, I dont really agree that AI shouldnt be factored into the sim index. Convincing AI really does a lot for sims. I recently had some great races in RACE 07, they were so fun as they had a good understanding of where on the track i was, not to mention the difficulty. Check out my video reponse. Not the greatest quality, but awesome little race starting from the back :)
Nice to see the Simbin titles getting some airtime, Live for Speed too. Haven't got Dirt2 yet (waiting for the price to drop)
Not sure about the sim index system to be honest. Would have preferred you highlighting the physics score on a review score instead, or something similar, But I appreciate the dilemna.
The sim index is a bad idea, it seems your just doing it for Iracing, because they don't have Ai and there is no presentation and the cost is ridiculous.
I disagree.. I think it has a lot of sim qualities especially when racing against some friends online.
If you're looking for a pure simulation Dirt 2 is not it. If you're looking for a great dirt racing game, none tops Dirt 2. If you want pure Rally sim, get Richard Burns Rally.
Yeah if I want to have some casual fun with non-simmer friends, then Dirt 2 fits the bill. I put on a Simbin title or rFactor, they are off on the first corner (and pretty much every corner for the most part). Inevitably this leads to frustration and so it's nice to have an arcadey title or two around.
To me Dirt 2 is like Shift, where the focus is on fun. Like fridain above, I'm still puzzled about how this scores higher in the "Sim" category than the Simbin series?
@fridain I agree. The problem is the scoring system is just too complex. Need fewer categories (5 tops), and whole numbers only. They still use decimals for averages which i don't get. And alot of games end up with final scores of 77-80 which is kind of low, but they end up saying the game is pretty good? The reviews are very solid, but I personally don't pay attention to their scoring.
Great show...I'd like to see some shows on track building tips. Maybe using Bobs Track Building or 3dSimEd or any other 3d programs. Also a series of modding spots would be good. Some tips on building cars and how to paint them. I know racing is what your shows all about but that would be nothing without the tracks or building of the vehicles. Great idea for another web show...Just my two cents worth.
I Shaun Cole used to race karts. Ran in the ICC 125 shifter class. Had some of the best times of my life doing it until I ran myself out of money. Luckily I still have sim racing.
Its to show the versatility of the mod... (can you download a rFactor track and drop it in?) shows SRT does the homework. If i had a league... I would want a mod that you can download tracks that were not raced by NASCAR in 2010 and drop it into the game to have a league race. maybe a cool retro track or an oval that is not NASCAR related.
There are probably tens if not several tens of ovals from the UK, Canada and US and Australia, lesser NASCAR Regional series (West, Canadian Tire) ASA and at least several dozen WOO and SUPR dirt tracks that not associated with national series racing.
Com on, man! Oval cars are fun to drive on the road courses. Take late model or Silver crown car to 'brands hatch Indy' and you will walk away smiling ;)
You guys are aware that ... rFactor has reprimanded the VHR guys for stealing other modder's work without permission and NOT including the proper credits ... right?
Not a huge sim racer considering I don't have too much in the pocket to buy the necessary wheels etc, but you guys keep me entertained the whole time. I am making a plan for when I do get a bit more money wise to buy the misc stuff
As this a show about racing simulations, and a very respectable amount of people share my opinion on Live For Speed, it would be really nice to see it properly represented. It isn't as big as iRacing or rFactor. But a sim challenging iRacing in terms of physics is surely worth mentioning a bit more! Some real life racers even consider LFS to be better...not sure I believe them, but it's pretty damn good. :p And anyway, LFS is just a little bit more affordable!
LFS does need an overhaul, you're right. Unfortunately, that isn't really going to happen. But the new tyre model should bring a lot.
The problem is that for every amazing feature, it is missing one. The current tyre model and general physics are incredible. But there isn't a good track to show them off. They are mostly completely flat, which is a real pity. There will be a laser scanned track (Rockingham) coming in at some point as you probably know, which should bring a lot.
It's really difficult. Of course I want lots more content, but it just can't happen with the way the game is made (3 perfectionists!) An overhaul of this could make much more content, and possibly of the same quality, but at what cost? LFS is so cheap - it's brought me over 3 years of enjoyment for £24. What else does that? One of LFS's biggest assets is the incredible multilayer system. If there is a lot more content, I can see some problems there with people being spread out around servers.
I called you out on a tiny error, I suppose it's the straw that broke my camel's back. It won't be a good idea to review LFS much more before the next update, which might be a while. There aren't many of you doing this show, and you're only human, so I can't really expect you to spend ages learning and playing loads of LFS, becoming involved in leagues etc. That's just living in an ideal world. But who isn't annoyed by people getting things wrong about something you love? :P
Well, you scored the cockpit of the FBM down for not having a steering wheel iirc, when you managed to turn it off :P I'm not saying any of your opinions are wrong, I promise!
Coming out of the alpha stage is not the point at all, like iRacing it is continuing to evolve. I'm sure you're talking more about development speed, and I'm not going to tell anyone they shouldn't be frustrated about it! But no promises have been broken, and if it was stopped now, I'd continue to play a great game.
Well Im still waiting for the VW Scirocco they announced in 2008. God knows how much time they would spend on a laser scanned track working this speed :p
Seriously, LFS is great, but a lot of competition has arrived since S2 was released.
Just for clarification, the LFS demo is free, the S1 license (not S2) is $18.46 and the S2 license (not S3) is $36.92
I don't want to get all nit-picky, but you guys getting stuff wrong about LFS is really frustrating after a while. In my opinion it is the best sim out there. I understand that this is an opinion, but you can't deny it is extremely realistic physics-wise (more so overall than rFactor or the GTR titles, at least.)
I disagree about LFS being the best.. Some cars in rFactor on laser wscanned tracks feel better than anything in LFS. Just my opinion though. LFS does kick ass.. don't get me wrong. Was wondering when an LFS fan would comment on me saying S3 ;-). I did say S1 was under $20 and S3 was under $40. I guess it was wishful thinking ;-)
i'am only 13 year old and i got 4 fuel cars and 7 eletric cars in my life + i did use my dadys 3 fuel cars and 4 eletric boat's so i'am a HUGE fan of RC!
Probably he has another steering ratio set up for his wheel than it should be for the sim. That might lead to the steer in the sim doing bigger movements than he is actually doing.

Ok, sorry but points scoring is getting ridiculous, now.
How can you decently place Dirt 2 above the Race series in sim score ???
What's the point of using point scores when you have had so many different scoring systems?
You can't compare the scores between games, with such nonsense.
I mean come on, just compare the points you give to each game for each rating category...

Yeah Dirt 2 is a joke for a pc simmer. Pure console quality as far as simulation goes.
