@GordonFreemanD40 CN is still actively purchasing units from both manufacturers. From a railfan perspective, I too prefer the M-2's over the ES's, but from an operations perspective CN must like both or they wouldn't keep buying from both companies.
No GE really sounds healthy, the new ES44DC and ES44AC's run very rough and have turbo issues, coming from a railroader they Dash9 is a more reliable unit. I see a lot of the GEVO's in for turbos.
@krazyjk022 The AC's are more expensive to purchase than the DC's. But the AC's are much more powerful pullers (Pulling Power) than the DC's also no matter how much pressure you put on AC's they will not burn out period!
Make me want to be a Train driver =). I'm curious into why the Engines have to be that big my understanding of Diesel Electrics is basically a engine connected to a generator and so on... Am I missing something? If the engine were smaller trains could have massive mileage benifits
@TravvyG The larger engines are needed to overcome electrical resistance of the bigger generator needed to deliver power to the electrical traction motors. Basically the more electricity you need the bigger the generator you require..the bigger the generator you have- the bigger the Engine you need to power it.
Great video. The ES44DC's are definately my favorite of the new locomotives to run. They may have some engine problems, but I'd take one over an SD70M-2 any day, I hate the new EMD's.
Foamers don't like them because they all look the same, but they are fine to me. It would make for a comfortable ride. How about the new SD70's with the isolated cab? Are they an improvement?
They aren't as bad, but EMD needs to redesign the control stand, the switches are in odd locations for some reason. The cab interiors are made out of cheap plastic. Seriously, my Chevy Aveo has a better built interior, there are holes in the bathroom floors, engine vibrations are still really bad in run 4 and 5.
The sound from the locomotive and problems with the GEVOs lead to CN purchasing SD70M-2s, which are way better than this shit.

Damn it sounds like crap
dalton1583 6 months ago
@dalton1583 You're hearing a lot of spitter valves and other noise, not a whole lot of engine sound there. It does make it sound not healthy...

Sounds like an old time sewing machine in the beginning.

@jsherk5 even the EMD 567D is better than GEVOs... I want to see a ES44DC with an EMD 710G prime mover powering it...

Thanks. Basically one has DC traction motors (ES44DC) and the other AC traction motors (ES44AC).

was this like a tour hosted by the railroad
southernpacificfan 3 years ago
It was a model railroad club open house, and CN took advantage and got some publicity out of it by having stuff on display right next to the club.

Great video.
That engine sounded like it was going to rattle apart. Do they always sound that clanky?
Jeffro403 3 years ago
Thanks! Yes, GE's always sound like that.
RailfanAlex 3 years ago
@Jeffro403 not really. The GE switchers sounded more like a Cummins or a 567C than old rattling metal scrap :D
