Please be reminded that this is actually a very sophisticated and elaborated work of art disguised as a pop-show. Something never seen before and never seen since. The artist (Wim T. Schippers) used TV and expressions of popular culture as a canvas to paint an alternative reality. Or rather: the idea of an alternative reality where archaic language and ditto theatrical effects clash with vulgar, physical expressions and popular culture. The result was usually very unsettling and controversial.
This is the maddest thing Ive ever seen. I'm stunned. Beefheart wearing the same shirt as on the Old Grey Whistle Test. Seriously though, it's so absurd. The Dutch don't get Beefheart/ He doesn't get them. It's fantastic. Thanks for putting it on.
@TheDutchHippie Sorry, I mean the guys on the show don't seem to understand him. Holland has some of the best record shops in europe. They 'get' everything!
@TheJohnRitchie It's actually an controversial TV show from that era, the guys that don't seem to understand him are Comedians. They do understand him, it's just a sarcastic way and comedy style.
"Kapitein Biestuk" translates as Captain Steak, so...
Anyway, this was an underground show, taking the fiss firmly and defiantly, ridiculing itself and its audience just as well. Either Van Vliet totally understands this, and appreciates it - or he hasn't got a clue... just like people either totally understand Beefheart's music, or don't have a clue.
@Bietel Don (Glen Vliet, only later called Van Vliet) hadn't got a clue. The only thing he thinks is: What a bunch of weirdos!! And he was right. He was lucky the stage wall didn't collapse as he went through the door. Usually it did. Sjef van Oekel was/is an icon. Evert van der Pik (Van The Dick) tried to make something serious out of it but only made it worse... Great show. They don't make 'em like this any more..
@casperHeyzeus I think Don was into lip syncing...His original 1974 live in London album is a legend. Anyways, Don is the captain of the soul ship music.
@FasterBullbus im kind of up to this point in dons career, john french's book. and ive been trying to find bootlegs and different takes to put instruments and voices to the recordings. its became quite an obsession lately. did he lip sync a lot of the tragic band gigs?
Never seen this. A little weird with Don lip-synching. Loved it when he asked the keyboard player to play Yesterday. Don had a good taste in music. RIP Don.
Surreal playbacking and absurd intro and outro.I didn't remember any of this though I grew up watchin Wim T. Schippers tv programs.Blows my mind under the circumstances.he gets the cup!!and asks for yesterday. So do we!You are goneYou left silently through the backdoor, but I will not forget.Seeing this for the first time today made me laugh!Indeed everything wrong at the same time is right! Will love you to my last day!Thanx
this is like something out of a fever dream

The organist gives off such a sweet small smile when Don starts to whistle.
It's the little things in life.

Consider this as a moderate act of Sjef van Oekel.

Call me paranoid, but it looks like those guys were jabbing at him and he got them back with 'Yesterday' and walked out on them.
