Nice to hear it sung without the high B I like it this way. He sang it this way at the 1968 concert with peters also at the los angeles music center. I would love to hear it again if anyone had recorded it and one of the encores was the trav. act one duet (Brindisi)
Interesting I heard Jan as I said do it in the big los angeles music center also in 1968 just after Tucker had done the aria in his recital there in January of that year. Peerce of course though had done the concert with Peters and by the way she was great and only 38 years old! Peerce's voice carried very well in the very big house.
Absolutely OUTSTANDING performance!!! This was BEFORE the laser surgery to remove his cataracts, right? Thank you VERY much for sharing this gem with us!!!!! (By the way: the concert from which this came featured Met artists singing arias and scenes from operas they had NOT sung at the Met. If you have the Met annals handy on your computer or at your library, check out who did what: it's fascinating!!!!!!
I'm not sure; first he had a botched surgery that left one of his eyes useless and then years later had another surgery that made him see better than he ever had before, although only through one eye. The reason he gave for leaving the Met was because his not being able to see was a handicap and, later regretfully, opted out of having a gala for his retirement as he thought it would hurt his concert career. For some reason I think he was still with the Met when he had the first surgery.
On another occasion I brought Tucker's youngest son Henry up to the Lanza house to meet Tony Cocozza in 1975,Tony died just a few weeks after that visit suddenly (mary was already gone in 1970) but Henry met the Lanza sons, interesting sons of two great tenor voices meeting and it was a friendly exchange. Mario had wrote to his parents about the time he met with Tucker after the opera in London and they had dinner, both couples and they talked late into the night at the hotel.
I heard him sing a concert in los angeles with peters that same year at the big los angeles music center and it sounded much the same when he sang this aria. My companion that evening was Mary Cocozza (mother of mario lanza) and I brought her back stage to meet Jan and Alice Peerce, Mario had subbed for Jan on Radio before he got into movies.
Vinylto video: another priceless video that shows the virtually ageless Jan Peerce singing like someone 25 years younger than he was with easy, free tone. Young singers should listen and learn from a really great singer and there was no shortage of ring either. A remarkable singer and my personal favorite. As to the power of the voice it sure carried into the gallery which is all that matters. Bravo Peerce and VinylToVideo

I have a December 18, 1976 Hempstead, NY concert with Peerce and Peters where he sang it but of course was in his 70s then.
