Once gain Bireli just demonstrates that he lacks musicality - random licks that make no sense, he did the same when outshone by John McLaughlin. I think the guy before him was Jimmy Rosenburg, apologies if that is wrong, whoever it was he definately had the right grasp in terms of what Django was all about. For me the real modern day master is Fapy Lapertin, check him out on YouTube.
@kenscott2557 Bireli was in his flamenco days in this video, trying new stuff. As much as i like Fapy,we can all play note for note Django but in improvising Bireli is a mile above the rest.He is constantly educating himself musically and trying new things,.Everytime bireli plays a song it sounds different,so musically,he is definitly better. He has numerous styles,he is more origional and has a better stage presence.I want to marry him, lol You should check out Raphael fays during his gypsy days
I like the second to last guy - his phrasing/ dynamic control is the best in this video. Bireli's is probably the most harmonically interesting but its a bit choppy. Awesome video!
@wachita15 That's Stochelo Rosenberg playing before Bireli. He's my favourite of all the gypsy players.Has The most wonderful feel. Bireli is awesome and technically the most accomplished probably but it's all preferance I suppose. ;)
Honestly, all of these players have something to bring to the table. The thing I find unfortunate is the failure to present some of the other influential players playing in europe such as Angelo Debarre, Raphael Fays, Tchavolo, Dorado Schmidt, Fapy (he is in the video for 10 seconds lol). Its not a matter of better but personal taste in music in general.
@Irishgypsy1988 Stochelo is probably the best traditional gypsy jazz player around, but Bireli is the master of true improvisation and has more licks and harmonic knowlege than anyone else. He never runs out of ideas...and play gypsy jazz and bebop...pop and metal styles that he's explored
laissons la technique a birelli mais la sonorite et le vibratode stochelo est bien agreable musicalement le premier solo de l anglais est pas mal du tout dommage que babick termine avec un instrument amplifie
Ha, yeah. There's nothing wrong w/ lots of banjos. Wait..yes there is..because only 1 out of every 12,000,000 of them know how to play 'em! Lots of instrument owners, not many players. This is fun to watch tho. I like watching jams. Especially when I know they aren't just playing canned breaks and licks. Which granted a lot are, but still fun.
Saying who is the best is like saying the colour blue is better than the colour green or red. They all have their own beauty and are all appealing in their own way. For me, Stochello's solo is perfect. Sweet, melodic, full of passion and technique. I love Bireli but he was too busy trying to play too much I think on this version of a classic. :)

Theres actually two rosenberg's there. I can't remember the other ones first name but he's Stochelo's brother and the rhythm player for his trio.
