Oh man, I just got back from vacation, and while driving between Allentown and Harrisburg (in Pennsylvania), I had the opportunity to really open my '08 up.

Some joker in an '02 Jetta 1.8T wanted to keep me from passing him (he was hogging the left lane, only going about 75 mph).

I dropped the hammer, and man, I really really really L.O.V.E. my exhaust note.

Definitely makes me glad I got this thing.

Der originale 4er R32 ist schon einmalig. Der hammer-Sound.. hab einmal einen live gehört und mir stellts immer noch die Haare auf, wenn ich daran denke. Dagegen war der 5er die Milchbubi-Version. Und vom neuen R20 ist Sound-technisch sowieso nicht mehr viel zu erwarten...

Nope, it's a VW product. Depending on which country you live in, you should be able to find a used one relatively easily.

Here in the US, the R32 was only offered for the 2004 (5000 units) and 2008 (5000 units) model years. I got my 2008 with low miles for just under Blue Book value.

It really is a fun car. I'm not a big fan of automatic transmissions, but the DSG is pretty sweet.

Good luck with that man. I just picked up an 04 with 60k for just under 19,000 and that was less than blue book retail. With VW being the brand with the highest resale value and the R32's rarity in the states, you may have a hard time finding one under 15,000. Might find a private seller on a VW forum.

Geekengineer is right, it's made by VW directly. Volkswagens R line is similar to BMW's M line and Merc's AMG line. It's their high performance line. And the 32 stands for the engine size, which is a 3.2 liter. There actually is an R36 Passat, with a 3.6 liter engine.

Honestly, I wish my R32 was an R36... for a small hatchback, that car is a total porker. It needs MOAR POWER!!!!111one.

Seriously. 250 hp pushing a ~3300 lb car might seem adequate, but with a fancy automatic it kinda falls flat.

I wonder if I can retrofit my '08 with a 6-speed manual from an '04...

Here in the US, the R32 was only offered for 2004 and 2008. The 2004 (Mk IV) variant only had a 6-speed manual, and the 2008 (Mk V) variant only has the 6-speed DSG.

I didn't want to buy a second-hand '04, since it would likely be beat to hell, and my only other choice was an '08 that has the DSG.

I'm glad I bought a clio v6 and not one of these. The clio was slightly cheaper at the time yet it's worth several thousand more now. It also looks better, goes faster and it's much rarer.

Not saying there's anything wrong with the r32, it's still my 2nd choice. I'm just glad I made the choice I did :o)

golf gti 150 hp sounds like a real turbo and it pulls well for a chunky car..but i dont care i got an automatic 1.6 and i kick dust on the road...i get to 120 very quick...its not hard just step on the gas and be off...i enter exits and past people in the fast lane..lol...shame about the top speed of this car tho..

dude i love this car but i love hondas as well but the thing with hondas are their so dam light so if i were to get the same amount of hp in a civic as in this r32 the civic would mop the r32 but that would need to have cam's or be boosted, but i would def. take a r32 over a civic,and the interior of the r32 is so much better then a civic or honda.
