I can't believe that a year has passed, but FYI it's time once again for International Corn Cob Pipe Month! Just as last year were are holding a video contest, so feel free to spread the word.
I think a month is too long to celebrate corn cob pipe smoking. A day or at best a week seems more appropriate. Perhaps a week to a month dedicated to pipe smoking with each day highlighting a different style of pipe.
Something interesting for you all... The first known pipes are those found in pyramids with mummies along with tobacco leaves. these were found on September 26th 1976. The discovery date of the oldest known pipes would make an excellent date.
Also, pipe smoking was introduced to Europe from the Americas in the 16th century. Native Americans smoked tobacco pipes long before the Europeans even got there. The French may have found a better material to make the pipes, but they definitely didn't invent tobacco pipes.
Thats quite ignorant to say the Germans and English never invented anything pleasurable. You don't go a single day of your life without using something that was invented by the two. Obviously you enjoy the world wide web, which was invented by Tim-Berners Lee who was in fact born in London, England. Karl Benz is acknowledged with inventing the modern automobile and guess where he was born? Yeah what do you know Karlsruhe, Germany.
Briar pipes were invented in France, and the centre of the French pipe-carving craft is at Saint-Claude, in the Department of the Jura, in the region of the Franche-Comté, in France. It would therefore be ludicrous to celebrate International Pipe-Smoking Day on the birthday of some German or Englishman. No German or Englishman ever invented anything pleasurable.
Thus International Pipe-Smoking Day ought to be observed on the birthday of some French internationalist. I suggest Jean Monnet, Father of the European Union.
I'm reading a book right now called "The Ultimate Pipe Book"
by Richard Carleton Hacker, and he found some evidence that suggests that Columbus "discovered" pipe tobacco when he landed in the bahamas. This led to a series of events that brought pipe smoking to Europe. Perhaps October 12th (Columbus Day) would be an appropriate day to choose for a National Pipe Smoking Holiday?
I say we give Einstein a holiday based on a more important aspect of his life. I would personally go with the Tolkien date, January 3rd. Great pipe btw. I think that's my favorite one so far that I've seen you smoke.
I suggest Tolkien. Not only was he an avid pipe smoker himself, but pipe smoking and tobacco are prominent in his novels. January 3rd being his birthday.
So far that is all I've smoked from. I'm to broke for a nice briar. I'd say a Missouri Meerschaum Corn Cob is your best bet. A corn cob smokes better then a "cheap" briar any day.
This might be a stretch, but I suggest August 7. 1887 was the year in which the first Sherlock Holmes novel was published, and 8/7 is August seventh. Sherlock Holmes (though fictional) is one of history's most iconic pipe smokers.
Sure! Looks like Feb 20 is the day. I propose that we have a international YouTube pipe meeting day (sometime next year) in which I would fly over to where ever. If we have enough people to attend.
you actually posted a video already on feb 17th about this day.....at one point you knew the day. But i am not opposed to a Marc's international pipe smoking day.
i realize this might have sounded mean...i didnt mean it in a condescending way.... you and dubinthedam pretty much taught me everything i know about pipes and pipesmoking.
It would be fun to have a large gathering event where every pipe smoker in a given city show up at one location to smoke pipes together. (and alert the media so it got on the news in every city)
Saints are usually remembered on the date of their death—their birthday in Heaven.
Saint Bruno of Cologne, founder of the Carthusian Order of Hermits, died at the Charterhouse of Saint Stephen, beautifully set near Serra San Bruno, Province of Vibo-Valentia, Calabria, Italy, on October 6, 1101. His grave there is still a place of pilgrimage.
It's that time if your again. We are celebrating International Corn Cob Pipe month again with another video contest. Check it out.

Perhaps Sherlock Holmes' birthday. He was fictional and an avid pipe smoker so I think that would be appropriate.
