  • man does Rob Suck on this song. I mean just listen to Jason's bass track on S&M its just so solid and good compared too this crap. Metallica ended in 2001

  • Hetfield=God!

  • there are 9 biebers lol

  • I was at this show, just suprised the hell out of cause I wasn't expecting it.

  • god what a sloppy performance

  • Fuckin´ great man!

    Really fuckin´ great!

  • ja też ich lubie

  • nothing will ever beat s & m

  • on the picture: kirk looks like "wtf am I doing here ?" or "whut is that over here"

  • @ike1218CA kirk saying me chineese me play solo weedly weedly wah wah wah

  • this si not on 2004 it was on 1999 on the S&M

  • LOL, this is not S&M

  • @Thenever86 You hear an orchestra?

  • The rocked it way harder in Nashville in 2004. They dedicated it to Cliff, and didnt fuck up the harmony in the outro like they did here. Much superior version in Nashville.

  • Lot's of people have tried to play Anesthesia, but few if any can play it quite the way Cliff did. The fingering rhythm is pretty complex. Kind of like how people have tried to play Orion (even Rob) but they never quite get the accuracy or feel for it the way Cliff did.

  • that's the beauty of complex jazz writing, rob get's orion perfectly tho, the seoul version is the best example

  • Rob screwed orion in seoul, his distorsion sucks

  • Last time it was played live was here if Im not mistaken.

  • waaaaaaaaaaaaw

the bass is using the wha wha and distor all the time!!!!!!!! awesomee !!!!!!

  • wow the bass is rely loud

  • They need to play their instrumentals a bit more often than they do. Like, once or twice each a year. Agreed?

  • agreed. how about every show?!

  • You're right. I believed that they didn't perform Ktulu since the S&M concert, but here is this video. But I think it is hard for them to perform these songs because of Cliff, you know...They played Orion at his funeral, and they didn't play that until 2006. But I would like to hear Ktulu, Orion, and Suicide more often and I dream about that once a time they will play the whole To live is to die...

  • you think rob can nail anesthesia? that would be another instrumental that would be badass in concert

  • Not too many bass player can nail Anesthesia as Cliff did, but i think Robert is one of these few people

  • yeah .. And john myung!

  • @Smertyin092

There is no-one who can NAIL Anesthesia, as it is mostly improvising of Mr. Burton.

If you heard him on live tapes, you will notice that he improvises most of the song.

  • @Smertyin092 What is so difficult to play Anesthesia ?

  • @Smertyin092 No one can play like Cliff (Style, movements, fretting, etc)...only a chinese man in Youtube...and Clifford Lee Burton...

  • @alvartaken hahahha that's true those asiatic guys can do anything even play like cliff burton I've seen a video of an amazing performance of anesthesia the best cover on youtube and he is asiatic

  • @Smertyin092 I dont think that Anesthesia is a song that anyone would like to hear get covered. It was so much of Cliff Burton, it was Cliff Burton, it would not be good. Its like trying to copy Burton and nobody could ever do that, in my opinion.

  • @michomachin55

Actually you are right. My comment was an answer for someone, who asked me if Trujillo could play Anesthesia. And my answer was (as you see) that Trujillo IS ABLE to nail it, but he SHOULDN'T DO that

  • @Smertyin092 and i know this is stupid replying to a 2 year old comment but hey check out how rob nailed anesthesia in a cliff tribute at Filmore.

  • @ZuBeRCraZyBassY

    I did.

  • Anastheshia technically isn't an instrumental, it's a solo.... Cliff used to improvise it alot when he played it live, I recall.

But I dont think I'm anyone to speak.

  • obviosly but not exactly like him i mean

  • @Smertyin092 To live is to die demands too many guitars :(

Sombody should play other guitar, i dont know, maybe Jason xD

  • @XXXkLeCiIj69XXX Maybe they should ask the big four again then because they were on stage with 12 people...or maybe 16...is that enough guitars:P

  • @1992Paul whoo man xD

  • if they play this in december when i go ill shit my pants and then eat it

  • you will huh?

    film it!:'D

  • i will!

  • Awesomee :'D

but 'fcourse they won't play it, but I AM gonna check if they did :D

  • and when u shit it out again can u wrap it up in an envelope and send it to me ? :)

  • Such nice song.... the intro gives me goosebumps

  • Bass was a little shaky. If they playing it now I'm sure it would sound better. Just like Dyers eve was better this year.

  • I wish MetallicA fucking plays songs like "Ktulu" much more often instead of songs like "Enter Sandman" or "One", they are freat songs but they are played all the time. What about a twist! METALLICA! I hope they play this song in Toronto in October

  • Theres a good reason for that. A lot of people when they go to concerts want to hear the hit songs like enter sandman, master of puppets, one, etc.

Some people at the concerts are just casual fans, or may have only heard a few songs before. It could be there first concert, a 9 minute long song like Ktulu means a lot only to the die hard fans, which is definitely the minority of the audience.

  • i agree with you to much james maybe getting old but he always rocked hard no matter what and he has meaning in his songs and i mean songs like low man lyrics and fade to black and prince charming and so on the stuff not on the radio

  • Damn, this is rare. Before this, the last time Ktulu was played was S&M. Before that, 1984, I think. If you go to a Metallica show, and they play this, savor it. You're damn luck.

  • @TheShoesOfDeath

they actually played it a couple of times in 1999 and 2000 without the symphony. Also the 4 S&M konsert with the one in Madison Square garden and Berlin.

  • date and city? please

  • november 9th, 2004.

    pensacola, florida.

    wikipedia XD

  • thanks! :D

  • kirk looks so funny

  • my second favorite metallica song, first is ride the lightning :)

  • Rob had way too much treble and the lead bits weren't good in my opinion compared to cliff's lead bassline

  • fuuuuck..i cant find "the call of ktulu" live in video...just sound

  • s&m maybe ^_^ lol

  • oh ok..very smart thnx...i dont want it on s&m

  • i believe there's a 1983 version somewhere, you could try searching youtube for it.

  • thanx!!:)

  • hahah kirk and rob look funny as hell!!! and props to Rob for aceing this beeter live without the orcheastra better than jason, who also did a fantastic job. i feel this one is slightly more like cliffs but still lacks that "omg! thats a bass!!" factor.UNtil 4:06!! what da hell didd rob pull their!!! did he harmonize with kirk for the rest of the solo!!! i think he did!! im so proud of that monkey-crab beaner, finaly another hispanic bassist. and hes in mettalica WOW!!!!! great job Trujillo!!!!!

  • Lol don't use long ass comments for stuff that isn't true, half of Ride the Lightning was already written before the EP was released. Dave wrote the song, there were no lyrics dumbass, they kept it instrumental and in the end Kirk wrote the solo

  • 7:30 out of tune....

  • either hes bending it or useing a wah lol

  • OMG, I love this song, it's really good, but this performance just sucks.. It doesn't have that climate, which is in the cd....

  • it would be nice if they played this live more often...

  • David Gilmour

  • Is this the 11/11/04 Nashville performance? I know they played it twice on this tour.

  • Rob!!!!

  • Thats BS dave wrote the opening...all dave wrote was lead for the 11 lousy months he was in metallica...Im not knocking megadeth because i love them but seeing those chords in hanger 18 and the part in want and where vocal pattern in hanger 18 and return to hanger is exactly the same as sanitarium except a faster tempo...Its old news that dave ripps off metallicas music..but alteast he does a good job right?

  • Wrong. Dave wrote lyrical melodies and guitar riffs, as well as several bass lines, that Metallica tweaked and moved into their own songs. Dave even came up with the concept of the prayer in the middle of Enter Sandman, something that was used ten years after his departure from Metallica. Nobody really ripped off anybody, and it's always been that way, more or less.

  • Where do you get the facts?

  • Megadeth's site, various other sources.

  • common knowledge for us metal veterans

  • Until I see a source on that it's bullshit. I don't even really care about what you're saying, but I'm sick of pseudo-metal historians acting like they know what they're talking about.

  • Wow...you're right about the vocal line. Now that was pointed out i feel stupid i didnt realize it before

  • yeah dude they are like exactly alike

  • Listen to "When Hell Freezes Over" it's the version only written by Mustaine/Burton/Ulrich, Call of Ktulu is touched by James

  • Creat... i live this song...

  • if you search the song 'when' by megadeth, it has the main riff of Call of Ktulu

  • as well as "hangar 51"

  • you mean 18

  • this is my favorite instrumental song of his band no contest!!

  • Fucking GREAT....!!!!

  • this song is so beautiful , maybe the best of Metallica with fade to black

  • this is fucking good but i prefer orion/// just my opinion

  • I wish that The Call Of Ktulu was on the Death Magnetic album... I mean other version of it..

  • other version?

    symphony?

  • Like the re-played song or something like that.

  • I was at this concert. it was in Pensacola, FL

  • Yeah. Thats entirely Kirk's fault. James plays the low riff, and he never changed, but it sounds like Kirk didn't go high enough to hit the accompanying harmony.

  • They really screwed up the last part.

  • 4:28 - 4:30 ---> PUAJ!

  • orion is better ...

  • metallica's instrumetals:

*the call of ktulu (very tragic, suspense, and dramatic feel)

*orion (pure passion within the music)

*to live is to die (FOR CLIFF)

*SUICIDE AND REDEMTION (i need to dissect this song more, no description yet)

  • Anesthasia Pulling teeth

  • Thats them just going at it being Metallica

  • wow, the last part of the guitar harmony is disgusting.

  • badass, but i dont like the china during the into. crash would sounded best. but either way, AMAZING. and who am i to rag lars anyway?

  • HELL YEAH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • They play it slower, but awesome too!

  • haha ! nice try rob =D>

  • haha this is the first Metallica's song and the first whole song which I have learnt to play on guitar, ever! :)

  • Exactly my case, but on bass guitar...it was a challenge because of cliff burton solos

  • yeah the bass solo sounds mighty hard! the guitar solo is hard too but i can just pull it off! great fucking song so damn epic. long live metallica!

  • 7:28 ouch!!

  • Wtf?

  • it was in 2004 in Pensacola, FL nov 9

  • What happend at 7:28?! Someone didn't go to the right octave, lol.

  • rob played well, but it just doesnt seem to fit the song as well as when cliff played it.

  • true

  • Yeah, but honestly, I think Cliff's distortion made him sound like a guitar more than a bass. That's why I like Newsted to be honest. We can all say that Cliff had alot of talent, but when it comes to how Jason and Cliff play bass, Cliff belongs as a lead guitarist! Just my ten cents..

  • i honestly think bass soudns way better wiht dist than guitar, it sounds heavier and more powerful, For whomt he bell tolls anyone?, when i see covers and the lead guitarrist is playing the intro i just fcking close it, it sounds so shitty itsnot even funny, and an insult to cliff

  • Cliff`s sound came from his from the combination of a couple of his Idols namely Jimi Hendrix and Lemmy Kilmister(of Motorhead)

Jimi used the Wah-wah and Lemmy used distortion, when combined you got Cliff`s sound.

Cliff made his bass like that because he wanted to do what Jimi did to his guitar, revolutionize it. Cliff wanted to be the best as well as be creative. He did that in my mind.

  • cliff had his style and that will never EVER be matched its just impossible he was TOO FUCKING good, much respect for him, one of my biggest idols

  • If cliff just could see what people think about him and all the love!! fucking amazing...he was a true god in music history!

  • lol dude, wguess why, it was cliff playing it, rob is the closest sh1t to cliff we will eve rhave, so enjoy him while he is here..

    Cliff forever RIP motherfucker=(

  • totally agree with every word u said...

Cliff forever RIP motherfucker=( - totally agree...

  • Yep. God bless him and his overdrive.

  • Eh...Rob's good, but it ain't bass without Cliff's distortion.

  • Hey Vulturous you really put in here really cool metallica shit. Thnx a lot for sharing man!

  • I agree. Thanks for the trax!

  • BAD ASS BASS SS SS SS

  • Does anyone know what show this is from? and I really like how it's easy to hear the bass on this, this is a fantastic bootleg recording, thanks for sharing it with the world, and I hope Metallica comes up to Canada again after they release the new album, I missed them in '04, but I have a bootleg of that show, so whatever...

  • where was this??

  • little correction

i do like robs sound but with the wah the sound sometimes goes from very loud to soft and that i find a bit to aggressive

nice version of this song though

  • song fucking ride the lightning song is the fuckin universe

  • Well this is awesome, there are some flaws, but overall it was a good performance.. long live Metallica!

  • i didnt know they played this on that tour!SAVAGE!!!!!

  • fuck you robert trujillo, you are the best D:

  • Cliff's version is the best to me...Jason's fill are repeated. Rob's one sounds funky

  • I like jasons and cliffs versions better because the overdrive/whammy that rob uses dont sound that good, on orion and bells it does sound good but its a bit to aggressive for this song, robs very good though

  • imo this is the best version of 'call of ktulu' ever because the basssolo can really be heard! on the album version the bass harder to listen without special EQsettings.

  • your right "gefrast" about that this solo comes out the best but on the youtube version of S&M jasons solo comes out very well (better than on the dvd) im just saying i think robs sound is a bit to aggressive for this song, but indeed rob does the effort of using the wah

  • high again! :)

i think it has to be played aggressive, do you know the version 'Metallica - The Call Of Ktulu (Live with CLIFF BURTON)'? its here on youtube.

cliff sounds even more aggressive, like trying to jump in your ear! (though the quality sucks bad :( )

  • it doesnt matter really, it stays a fucking great song :)

    HELL YEAH bass solos

bands should do more real bass solos like this

  • you're right! all the instrumentals are my favorites. ;)

    pulling teeth (anesthesia) is awesome.

  • Rob`s version is still better than Jason because Rob actually tried the wah-pedal and distortion stuff, whereas Jason just played basic bass and didnt even try to do the stuff that made this song great.

  • Rob's a really good player. But I like Cliff and Jason much better for this song.

  • dave mustaine uses this riff in hangar 18..

  • thats because he wrote call of ktulu, he named it when hell freezes over. Metallica just added in some things and changed the name, just like the four horsemen.

  • Cliff Burton wrote this song, not mustaine...

  • It was both of them.

  • It was Dave Mustaine who wrote most of the guitar-parts.

If you hear the song Hangar 18 by Megadeth, he uses most of the chords from Call of the Ktulu in it.

  • Yeah, the first time I tried to play Hanger 18 I was like "WTF?" this is "The Call"!

  • omg me too

  • What date is this show?

  • kirks solo here was fucking good!!!!

  • roberts sound in this one is fucking heavy..roberts ok...i just dont like his style

  • i dont get why you say rob doesnt solo in this, its not rocket science, but he does little wah things and small walk-arounds.

  • what is up with this bass? I'm sorry, but something just doesn't right about it...like it's out there musically, you know?

  • I dunno, Rob can't play this song right I guess. I was really hoping he'd actually solo more. Jason did a better job at covering this really, but this was still a god performance.

  • Wow excellent

  • i agree the sound quality isnt that good....but just get the dvd of s and m and turn off the orchestra cuzz ktulu sounds excellent that way.....

  • how the hell do you turn off the orchestra?!

  • your a noob

go to audio in the menu

  • your a noob

go to audio in the menu

  • this isn't S&M dude

  • cambien a lars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I don't care what anyone says kirk nailed that solo

  • FUCK YES!!! ktulu without the symphony!!!

  • Rob sounds awesome. I think hes slaping and popping it and if he is, it sounds fucking great. i wanna download this..=P

  • This song kicks ass. I never knew they performed it after S&M.

Wow, they did a lot of old songs in 04'.

  • Kirk absolutely butchered the solo here. Its hard to stand up for him when he does not perform well all the time. He is still my idol though

  • Kinda part of being human you know? Any band, any musician isn't a 100 percent all the time. That's the thing about watching a band live, overall the performance was amazing and that's what matters.

  • Rob rocks

  • i dont know if you meant rob didn't have distortion, but it was distorted. i liked the tone, it's punches through better. plus i dont like bass tones drenched in distortion. finally, i thought rob played some really cool fills.

  • but Ktulu was drenched in distortion, with Jason and Cliff, it fits the song, not the clangy sound.

  • Didn't they only play it on the S&M shows with Jason? And He had NO distortion on those shows...Kirk was using wah when they done it with Jason, if you listen carefully, still awesome.
