  • Wow this was very interesting. She was definitley hollywood quality. Very well done. I am adding this to my playlist.

  • I was touched at the end, well done!

  • Great video, Sufei! And to the pwalker00 idiot, Asian people are no longer called "Orientals," just as African Americans are no longer referred to as "Coloreds."

  • Thanks for the interview. Great stuff.

  • Thanks for the interview, this is GREAT!

  • I like her 旗袍 Qi Pao dress. I think I want to read a book about her life.

  • Impressive. Thank you for sharing this.

  • wow. this is the first time i heard of her.

  • Can I see the real anime? I don't want Anna May Wong.

  • She was wearing what in her ear on the party?

  • i know anna..hahaha

  • BFI is doing a Anna May Wong season in London next month. Go check it out if you happen to be around.

  • that guy is right, i'm a 20-year old cantonese, and i've never heard anna may wong! what a shame...this contry sucks!

  • Anna May Wong is Taishanese

  • I heard her story before, but this video is a great analytical view of her time and her role.

The west has not really changed in their discrimination of Asians in cinematography, not openly but subtle nowadays, yet Hollywood types are the most spoken about human rights blah blah in China, kind of make you think whether a racist really cares about your well being.

  • Great Documentary. Thanks so much.

  • Great documentary. Anna May should be recognized and even celebrated by today's generation. It is truly remarkable that a lone Chinese (first Asian) lady went half way across the globe to have made media success in then racist America.

  • anna may wang is beautiful... back at the time, movie star and singers were considered as lower class career, that was why rich chinese wouldn't marry her...

  • very nice documentary, Thanks

  • She was so beautiful even from the standpoint of people living in the modern world. Thanks a lot.

  • Thank you for letting me know about her! It's really strange coz I grew up in China and have a strong interes in films, but I didn't know her before! Thank you again! She's beautiful!

  • be nice to people I am chinese and I totally disgree with you!

  • lol, what a bozo.

  • actually i didn't know her before....but now i know her a lot,thx,SuFei~

  • The world is so beautiful just because of the diversity of the human beings.I like Sexy

Beijing and Christ, you bring me the new viewpoints!

  • i love Anna May!

  • If producer of this video is really interested in China or Chinese women in 20th century. I would suggest him or her to make video about Madam Jiang Kai Shek or Jin Qiu(秋瑾). They are the real roles affecting Chinese histroy and society.

The documetory was not bad. But I felt sad after watching it. As a Chinese woman, I must say the image that Ann May Wong represented in the movies might just represent herself but all other Chinese women.

  • great video:) Can I request that you make a mini documentary of art district 798? pretty please ~good luck ~

  • true that!!!

  • Hollywood continues to propagate negative stereotypes of Orientals. Orientals typically play demeaning roles as idiotic vermin to the western world. At best, oriental Females play "Venomous Woman" roles to leading white character(s), and oriental males play supportive roles as comical Kung Fu foreigners. The American born Oriental, particularly the Oriental male, simply doesn't exist. Seems Hollywood is the most ignorant towards their own Americans -- American born Orientals that is.

  • i absolutely agree with you!!!! female as "venomous woman" which could be cool in a very twisted way, male as "kung fu idiots" which seems even more derogatory. america is a paradoxical nation, it tolerates immigrants as its "fellow americans" but still it discriminates them into a category without much space.

  • even at modern times, see hong kong's maggie Q play the undying vixen in bruce willis' "die hard 4"..i feel slightly annoyed when she ressurects back after being pushed down into the burning elvator. what's so different from the time of anna may wong as con asian woman?

  • @pwalker00 I'm an american (WASP) who's been living in Brazil for 7 years and I had all those politically correct ideals and guilt trips in American high school (not college, that was here in Brazil). I am coming to believe that the analysis of "ethnic stereotypes" and all this talk about it is sort of a U.S. obsession and I'm not sure it's a whole lot healthier than just plain being a great big bigot. It's actually kind of confusing and complicated. I wish it was simple.

  • wong's voice is husky. i like it. i thought it would be heavy chinese accented which might sound unpleasant. but her voice is cool. i like the male introducer's erudite eloquence, but not the starstuck female interview with the china craze. and actually i've ordered that wong bio and i'm gonna read it thru someday. the 20s was a very interesting decade for orient, so many conflicts on various fields which made it so amazing.

  • Wow, what a great reference guide for people around the world. Thank you so much!

  • I LOVE Anna May Wong. Thank you for doing this episode!

  • I meant Anna MAY Wong

    lol

  • wow

    anna mae wong!

  • wow I had no idea about Anna May Wong. It will be very hard to find her movies.

  • Oh .. .I have that book .. She was really something!

  • you look sexy in that shorts... ^^

  • This is excellent work. It would be great if you could expand this into an hour doc. Of all the great early cinema icons, Anna Mae Wong may have the best story to be told. Without a doubt, she ranks as one of the best ladies in early Hollywood, an equal to Louise Brooks and Clara Bow in terms of talent and looks.

  • Great! Anna, your mini docs of China are getting better with every new post. You are growing as an artist and bringing the world closer with your smile. I think I have a crush on you!
