  • Oh and while i'm on a roll, why after all these years does Battersea Power Station still stand? Not got anything to do with the fact that its in 'That London' and therfore considered contemporary and no doubt at least Grade II listed and deserving of preservation. Conversion to an art gallery for the new wave of Battersea and Clapham professionals inhabiting former working-class terraced houses for 400K a pop in what was once a rough arse part of London. Being a northerner I hate this 'divide'

  • Its hard to compare Stonehenge to two cooling towers but once upon a time Stonehenge was new and there was no history or nostalgia associated with it. It seems that it won't be long before there will be a huge gap in our living architectural history from post WWII Britain to present day. That leaves a huge gap that future generations will never witness, just more apartments, retail parks with Pets at Home, Pizza Hut, Halfords and Tesco. The country is becoming so generic. What a shame....

  • I cant beleive youre compairing a couple of usless old cooling towers with cathedrals & Stonehenge! They're right next door to a sewerage plant for christ sake! Anything they made them into wouldve smelled of rotting human faecal matter! I hate to sound crude, but leaving a pair of cooling towers erected after a power plant has been demolished is like leaving a condom on your penis after youve finished having sex! They served their purpose and they needed to go. Its called progression people!

  • Tell ya what. Let's demolish our cathedrals. Let's put a price tag on Stonehenge and sell it to property developers. Let's pull down our thousand year old castles and build a fucking ASDA. Unmaintainable my ass! Land is worth money and selling our heritage makes corporations richer. Full stop.

  • I agree what you saying in principle, but not your language. Of course it's all to do with money. But they shouldn't knock down historical buildings.

  • These were historical buildings and were an exhilarating view to drive by. Nowhere else in the world boasts such a view at the elevated height on the M1 that runs by it. I live in Huddersfield and the same thing has happened here: Victorian factories demolished for cheap modern flats with plasterboard walls. It's scandalous.

  • HA Should do Tinsley nxt!

  • a land mark lost forever. how will I know driven past Sheffield now (apart from the signs LOL)

  • the girl on the audio sounds well tasty. camera works a bit dodgy though, but an enjoyable video.

  • no longer will i know the half way point between monaco of the north (leeds) and my home (matlock derbyshire.) I grew up visiting grandparents and going past these each time. I have yet to go past without.

Long live fair cooling towers, why you stayed up since 1990 when the powerstation was demo'd is a indicator of the typical sheffield intellegence, low.

fucking dee daa slags, shuting our valuble motor way. should have kept the steel works going and powered it on dee daas. cheap labour

  • i was there :) well closer then that though lol it was mint*

  • I can't imagine going over Tinsley viaduct without seeing the towers. It was my own little marker that I was back in Yorkshire and nearly home. RIP!

  • it should have been named meadowHELL!!!

  • r i p bill n ben. will be missed xxxx

  • I was sat up in bed at the time, but awake as my son had just had a bottle, it was 3 am and I heard the bangs my sister was staying with us and she was in the room, we heard one bang then another and we knew it was the towers, I couldn't help it but I shed a few tears

  • they wer the norths battersea power station.. . ur not gonna see that cum down ne time soon r u.. ? BASTARDS!

  • Blow up meadowhall and keep the towers! ;)

  • ha ha

  • i agree with you i hate meadowhall.

  • I appreciate how passionate everyone is about the towers, I understand the local identity that they provided. If you had to make a choice, bring down the towers or blow up Meadowhall... Which would you choose? please respond -and be honnest...

  • Blow up Meadowhall, I can't stand shopping centres!!!! Everywhere you go - there's a bloody shopping outlet....I'm sick to the back teeth of them!!

  • 3 "thumbs down" votes for my comment there....all from women no doubt! Oh they can't be without their shoes & handbag shops!

  • They may be huge ugly buildings, but they are a monument to arriving back in the city that I have lived in all my life. Personally I avoid meadowhell, not my kind of thing. They should build something in it's place for large number of people who opposed their demolition!

  • Personally, I think they should build 2 new wind turbines. I think it would provide an update to the old cooling towers. It would still act as a land mark and show how Sheffield can move on and look to the future (from old power generation relics to new sustainable power generation). The one thing that I liked about the cooling towers is the controversy that they created. Wind turbines would provide the same controversy but from different people.

  • 2 couldn't power a house.

  • They forgot to explode the top 10 stories before the lower ones.

  • 10... 9... 8... 5... 4... BOOM!

A very sad day. One of my earliest memories was the cooling towers which we passed on the way to and from my Grandma's. Bad times :(

  • Nice one, a good night, I thick 10,000+ folks were there.

    PS Who farted?

  • It's like being at the Olympics... with all the building demolition they do there

  • rofl

  • The reason aso many people showed up to watch was because it was the last time we would see something that we see almost everyday.

    RIP Towers.

  • damn don't these people have anything else better to do. Then again it seems ironic seen as im watching in on youtube

  • Classic comment :)

  • it was like watching an execution...

  • how many executions have you been to that have had a countdown...

  • I proposed to my bird in one of thoses towers, I told her to meet me at half two sunday morning24 Aug 2008, but shes blown me out now cos I've not heard anything from her!! SLAG!!!

  • wow.

i live close to there and it woke me up this morning. ahaaa ;]

  • what a load of bollocks. why did they even waste their time knocking them down they should have been left alone!!

    goddamn eon bastards.

  • So are YOU going to contribute a million pounds to make them safe?

If someone had got killed by a piece of falling concrete then everyone in the community would be complaining "Oh they should have done something" Not to mention they would have been liable for insurance payouts and huge fines for negligence.

  • Yeah, they should have left the maintenance up to the local council tax payers, estimated to be approximately £1m per year. I am sure all of the 217,000 households in Sheffield would not mind paying for them (only 4.60 per house until they finally can not be maintained anymore), especially the 13,500 lone parent households, the 41,000 over 75 year olds or the 105,000 people suffering from 'limiting long term illness', the 23,000 permanently sick or disabled or the 21,000 unemployed.

  • pensioners dont pay tax as they have no earnings, same as over 75's single parents claim tax credits. limiting long term illness, u cant work, benefits to live off, thats the way it works, it works well. the unemployed dont pay tax aswell, neiter do the sick or disabled.

how does this argument add up sorry?

  • council TAX.

If it was income tax, it would not be a local tax would it?

  • First bit wrong, my dad does pay taxes, he pays rent and rates which is a tax.

  • Good riddance. They were eyesores. I would have smashed them up with a sledgehammer.

  • aye or8 u wud av smashed em up wi a sledega hammer...love to see you try?!!!! good riddence wtf u on ab out? dey wa a aland mark of sheffield n ppl knew wen dey wa in sheff coz of dem...tosser

  • bloody eyesores.............dont see what all the fuss is about. there's far more to sheffield than 2 concrete bogroll tubes.

  • I booed. While impressive to watch i think its terrible that one of sheffields greatest landmarks has now been destroyed. They represented our city's history. We were after all an industrial city. E-on can got rot in hell because they'll never get a penny out of me.

  • i agree...i cant believe they knocked them down!!

  • They had no choice but knock them down, they where not safe anymore and showing damage. They could have made them safe but that would have cost a lot of money

  • good on you, had I been able to go, I would have booed too.

    DOWN WITH E-ON!!!

  • Another great land mark destroyed, we value none of our history. Driving down the M1 will never ever be the same again. No matter were we where travelling from, it was always great to drive past them because we knew we where nearly home!!

  • I was right next to thee fog horns :D

  • Lol sheffielders cant count!

  • good film...loved how everyone shit there selfs when the loud bang went off to scare the birds away..we were stood watching from the side of the bus interchance..it looked like the second tower was gonna hit the bridge..
