  • it sounds great :)

    which flute do you have?

  • @1609annee Thanks!!! I have a Powell Conservatory flute - I love it!!!

    --Emma

  • Lovely! I'm 15, been learning for three years. So jealous that you've had lessons since you were three! Lucky you :) I hope can be as good as you some day!

Keep up the good work :)

  • @Neji961 Hi, Thanks!!! Yah I'm definitely a lucky girl but we're both lucky because we play the flute!!! Yeah!!!

    --Emma

  • Youre Amazing! I love all your performaces! <3

Im playing this solo for a competition (:

Out of curiosity ; how long did it take you to learn this piece?

  • @monkey11958 Hi, Thanks!!! I think it took about a week to learn the notes and then a couple more weeks to figure out how I wanted it to sound. Have fun playing in the competition and let me know how it goes okay??

    --Emma

  • Amazing! I am in 9th grade and planning on playing this for solo contest in January! I'm really hoping I can learn it in time :D

I know you hear it all the time, but you are such a good musician!:)

PS: I watched your flight of the bumblebee video (also amazing!) and was hoping you could tell me (kind of hard over the computer, i know) how to get the flutter tongue to sound good? I've tried... It was a fail!

And also, do you take lessons, or are you just naturally this good?

    -Emily

  • @flutistinpink Hi Emily, Thanks! For flutter tongue, first do it without the flute but still make your embouchure and pretend you have the flute. Then try it actually on your flute. Keep going back and forth and you'll get it but it might take a few days or a week. Don't give up. Once you figure it out you'll never forget!!!

Yes I have a teacher. I've been taking lessons since I was 3.

Have fun playing your flute and let me know how it goes okay. --Emma

  • I can't tell but is that a gold flute? by the way, you are phenomenal!

  • @cmclain579 Hi, Thanks!!! Yah it's gold but not mine. I borrowed that flute from the Sonare people for the performance. That flute has an amazing sound and it was great to play!!!

    --Emma

  • @GeoRockMin thats so cool that you got to borrow a gold flute from Sonare! I got to play a gold Burkart flute at a flute convention last year and it has such a rich sound! I'm 4 years older than you and no where as good as you but I hope to be one day! I'm learning this song for my flute lessons so I'm very glad I got to hear such a wonderful flutist play it!

  • Hi Emma, I just ordered this piece from SheetMusicPlus. Can you suggest any other flute sheet-music websites?? Also, how often do you order sheet-music?? Thanks :-)

  • @RockPlayersFlute Hi, FluteWorld and Carolyn Nussbaum are great for flute music too. They always have everything I need. --Emma

  • I see the goat dancing in the dunes with the sand ! ;D

    You make me fly !

  • @FrenchyPianist :) :) !!! --Emma

  • i am going to play this to enter a conservatory in france .. could you tell me some advice, please? :)

i like your interpretation very much, keep up the good work !!! :) xxx

  • @nanaflute4ever Hi, Thanks!!! I think the most impotant thing is to try to tell a story with the music. That way everything goes together and doesn't sound random. Good luck on your audition!!! Let me know how it goes!!!

    --Emma

  • @nanaflute4ever Hi, Thanks!!! For me I think the music really has to tell a story. I kind of had a whole story line by line of what was going on. That way it doesn't sound random. It's so cool you're auditioning for conservatory!!! Good luck!!! --Emma

  • played this piece last year, french music is so much fun to play. you're simply amazing! keep up the good work!

  • @icemanxoxo Hi, Thanks!!! Yes French music is awesome!!! --Emma

  • This is our District audition piece for this year! I just have to say, you are fantastic at what you do. I love your big, bold sound and how you've interpreted the piece. Keep up the amazing work!

  • amazing ! btw, the beginning reminds me from 'the little house on the prairie' intro :D

    ~kira

  • magic flute,

    bravo!

  • You inspire me. And I am in my 50s. I love your sound and interpretations of all the things you do. I, too, have a Powell and I love it! Keep up with the beautiful sounds you make.

  • @saficat123 Hi, So cool you have a Powell too!!! I love mine and I can find every color I imagine in it!!! Have fun playing!!! --Emma

  • Hey. I feel really special now! I am working on memorizing Habenera from Carmen. Other than that, my favorite song is Andante et Scherzo!!!

    --Jason

  • Why don't you talk to me anymore?

  • @SuperPike8 Hi Jason, I do talk to you. I just don't go on YouTube every day.

    --Emma

  • Hi Emma, I was wondering what type of flute you have? (: You're incredible!!!

  • @BelievenMusic1 Hi, Thanks for watching!!! I have a Powell Conservatory flute. I love it!!!

    --Emma :) :)

  • You can now send me a Friend Invite. I accidentally had my channel set to hidden

  • Do you want to be friends? That would be so amazing!!!

    --Jason

  • @SuperPike8 Hi Jason, You can send me a Friend Invite and I'll approve it. I tried to send one to you but there's something with your channel that won't let me. --Emma

  • I'm playing this for a recital in april, its such a fun song to play :D

  • @MahoRoulete Yah it's so much fun to play!!! Have fun in your recital!!!

    --Emma

  • @GeoRockMin I plan on it. i'm playing Vivaldi flute concerto "la notte", this, and Khulau's 3 duos concertants with my teacher. I love playing and hope to be able to play with you one day when i'm as famous as you and sir galway :)

  • I am so jealous.

  • I love your tone, Emma! It's so colorful and sonorous.

  • Hello Emma, you amaze me :) I have one suggestion for you tho...you might want to work on keeping your fingers closer to the keys. I'm sure since this is a year old you are probably better at that now, but that's just something I noticed in this video. Keep it up girl!

  • Thank you Emma for your amazing inspiration. I am so proud you!! I am taking lessons again after 20 years and am frustrated that I cannot play better. You motivate me to continue practicing and not give up. God Bless you!

  • @karenmccabe1 Hi Karen, It's terrific you're playingthe flute!!! It's a hard instrument but I know you'll do great if you keep playing and practicing!!!

    --Emma

  • WOW, you're amazing!

  • @wXy26 Thanks!!! I love the flute!!! --Emma

  • This is amazing. I feel completely inadequate now! haha. If this was over a year ago, I can only imagine how you sound now. Keep up the good work!

  • wow.... i dnt even no wt so say. that was amazing. I am a college student at UAB and my teacher gave me this peice to work on for my jury this semester... i came on here to lookand find some vids of the song so id have something to practice for. "when i grow up i wna play like you" that was great.

  • i only wish I had that tone and great dynamic ability.

  • You inspire me so much, i hope one day to be as good as you, though i doubt it.

    - a fellow flute loving girl

  • Emma, dear, I am talking you up in New Jersey, even with another fluteist who comes to Nj from Poland, Ursala. I am on a new e-mail, or back to an older one:

TheGottwerths I watched her play yesterday on her beautiful gold flute. She played an obligato to a chorus singing O Shenandoah. My new e-mail is close to the old one: thegottwerths@comcast. If it helps, we are one hour+ east of Philadelphia. She is on Face Book, i'll tell you another time.

  • I think I saw you performing this!!! Is this at the NFA Convention in New York City? If so I was there. You are amazing!

  • @Liz3j Yes!!! This was at NFA!!! It's so nice you were there!!! Thanks for watching the video!!!

    --Emma :) :)

  • @GeoRockMin You did a great job! I'm so glad I was right about this being the NFA! I don't think I got to say hello to you after you performed because Alena (one of the other performers) was a friend (who I met through my teacher) and I was busy talking to her. So hello now :)

  • I recently got an open hole flute last year. I took out two corks and went cold turkey on the left hand fourth finger. It is sooo hard to get the right hand position. I have always been bad with my hand position... how do you do it so naturally withouht having your hand hurt?????

  • @Boscolie007 Hi, I have really long stretchy bouncy fingers. So I think that helps me. But if you keep working you'll figure out what works for you. But I don't think your hand should hurt. Maybe try keeping your hand as soft and relaxed as you can. Let me know how it goes!!! And have fun playing your flute!!!

    --Emma

  • @GeoRockMin Thanks for the advice... I'll have to try being more relaxed... I can't believe that I can learn so much from such a young artist.

  • @Boscolie007 I try and keep my whole hand pivoted so the holes are just automatically covered when you put each finger down. Also, going cold turkey might not be the easiest way to do it. Some fingers will come more easily than others.

  • vc toca muito bem, mais o seu vestido é muito brega

  • You are such a talented girl! I'm so glad there are younger musicians like you out there. :D

  • You should seriously make CD's, you sound so beautiful!

  • How often do you practice that you can play as perfeckt? Beautiful to listen to you.

  • Thank you!!! I practice about 2 hours, 6 days a week.

    --Emma

  • I would like to see if you could play a bass flute...hmmm...now that would be impressive!

  • WOW!! I'm a sophomore in college and have been playing the flute for ten years, and I'm just playing this piece now. And I'm horrible at it. XP

Great job! I hope you stick with the flute!!

  • you're amazing! You play very well, fantastic! I'm 15, and I'm playing for 7 years now, and I can't play this well:(

    Very nice:):)

  • Emma, Wait and see...

You will be the best flutist in the world..

BTW, You have alot of technique~

  • brava bravissima! I hope you will continue to like the flute so much!!

  • Thanks!!! The flute makes the most magical music!!!

    --Emma :) :)

  • Dude, that was great. I am 14, one of the best in my school, but not NEARLY as good as you. holy crap!

  • How rude the camera people were!

Clicking away while she was playing.

Once I reached up from the pit and kept the person's camera while the performance

    went on... click free

    BTW, Nice performance!

  • Hi, Thanks for watching!!! I know what you're saying but honestly I'm just happy people took the time to come. This was at NFA and people could go to hear lots of famous musicians but instead they came to this session. I think that's pretty nice!!! As long as they're not talking or goofing around I don't mind.

    --Emma

  • how do u have the time to evan practice that much lol

  • It's the funnest part of the day!!!

    --Emma

  • wow. I remember playing that when I was ten- but not even near to as well. THAT WAS AMAZZZZIIINGG!!

  • Hi, Emma my name is Dekel and have 7 years and I play the flute too, but you play very well, and want that be friends =).

  • Hi Dekel, I love having new flute friends!!! Have fun playing your flute!!!

    --Emma

  • és minha inspiração pequena!

  • Thanks!!! :) :) :)

  • Another wonderful video -- thanks Emma for inspiring us all!

  • Hi, Thanks so much for watching!!! This was at NFA and I had so much fun!!! I hope you have Happy Holidays!!!

    --Emma

  • Fantastic.

  • Brilliant Emma!!!! My daughter was a little older than you when she played this piece in a solo and ensemble competition. She rated superior ! I really do know how difficult this piece is to play. You have lovely low tones and such great breath control...I can just see those little goats dancing up the hills!! Thank you for sharing this with all of us. My daughter is 30 now but watching your video brought me right back to her performance and brought tears to my eyes.

  • Oh my! Thank you so much!!! I'm happy I brought back a special memory of your daughter!!! Music is so magical and mysterious like that!!!

    --Emma

  • Emma, beautiful! I really enjoyed this piece.

  • What brand flute are you playing in this video? And way to go, for such a young age, you rock!!!

  • Thanks!!! I'm playing a Sonare 708. It's not my flute. The folks at Sonare let me borrow it for this performance. That flute is a beauty!!! Plays like a dream!!!

    --Emma

  • That's awesome. I like Sonare. I am playing this as well for my solo....and Im 14. haha.

  • always good!

    toujours super!

  • Fantástica, muito linda. Grande abraço do amigo Daniel - Brasil

  • I love this song but.... It's a bit complicated for me because some parts they have lots and lots of flats!!! Well done Emma,

I'm playing this song at the momment!

  • I think the best thing is to practice scales every day. Try to do something in every key every day. That way you get great at all of them!!! Have fun playing!!!

    --Emma

  • Emma... beautiful! I like your playing very much.

  • Thanks!!! :) :)

    --Emma

  • Sorry,but just asking...

Where did you play this song??

And are people taking photos of you???

Anway, you played this song beautifuly!! I am learning this piece now. BUT I think this is easier that the song that I played but still hard!!!!

    Thanks for posting this video!!

  • Hi, This was at the National Flute Convention. Thousands and thousands of people who love the flute. It was great!!! And yes, people took lots of photos of everyone and everything!!! Me too!!!

    --Emma

  • Ha, I love this video too!! I made up my own story for this song.

  • I like to make up stories for the music too!!!

  • Hi Emma you are talented at evry song you play I just wanted you to know that

  • Good job on this! Just out of curiosity, what brand of flute are you playing? The lower register is great on that flute! I play an Avanti, and I love it, but anyway, I was just wondering

  • Thanks!!! I'm playing a Sonare 708 in this video. I borrowed it just a couple of minutes before the performance. That flute is a beauty!!! I usually play a Powell.

    --Emma

  • @GeoRockMin Oh Powells are amazing. I almost bought one a few weeks ago, but we went with the Avanti. Anyway, continue the dedication to your instrument!

  • How long did you take to play this piece?

  • Hi, I guess it depends what you mean. The notes took a week or so to memorize, but it took longer to decide what the notes say. Probably a month.

    --Emma

  • just barely got back from my audition...pretty good....I could have done much better! I botched the high b flat slide. but other than that yeah :-)

  • Thanks for letting me know!!! I hope you had fun too!!!

    --Emma

  • im so impressed your tone is that good on a beginner flute. what brand is it? i have a sonare. you are very very VERY talented. keep up the good work!

    -Abby, 17

  • Hi Abby, Thanks for watching!!! I played this on a Sonare. I borrowed it just before this performance. That Sonare flute is a real beauty and very easy to play!!! Have fun playing your flute!!!

    --Emma

  • i going to play this in a couple of weeks for a district audition...last year i got first chair (fyi im 14) you have an awesome sound...keep it up! someday you'll be famous!

  • Thanks!!! Good luck with your district audition!!! I hope you get first chair again!!! --Emma

  • i'm 15 and you're a lot better than me!it was really great, great sound! I could never memorize such a long piece. You're great, looking forward to seeing other videos of yours!

  • A very classy choice of repertoire played as the composer would have wanted it. Keep up the good work!

  • Thank you!!! This piece is so much fun to play!!! --Emma

  • Hey Emma,

    This is Danielle again

Is Selmer a good brand of flute it is what i have now?

  • Hi Danielle, I don't know about that brand. But I still have the beginner flute I started on, and I sound like me when I play it. The best thing is to have a great teacher. A great teacher will help you sound your best no matter what flute you have!!! --Emma

  • O_O

    Holy dang, you are amazing!

  • dang!! did you play this by memory???

  • I try to play all my solo stuff from memory. For me, it's easier to listen to the sounds coming out. The pages get distracting. But that's just me. Thanks for watching and commenting!!! --Emma

  • You beat any high school flutist I've ever heard right out of the water. Love your long notes too, those vibratos would be envied around the world.

  • wow.i play the flute and like that is amazing.

  • This is Great! Do you have any tips on sound improvement? Hehe:) Anyways, Your amazing! And not to mention you your flute look adorable:D

    -Another Flautist:)

  • Thanks! I borrowed that flute just before this performance. It's a beauty!

The best thing for sound is long tones. I hate them, but they really work. I do long tones every day I play my flute.

    Thanks again!!! --Emma :)

  • Wonderful!! (:

  • Another terrific effort Emma. That would have been a very challenging piece to get right, but you seem to have managed to do that. The audience was obviously very appreciative too.

    Lots of stars from me.

    Love

    Lalita

  • Emma, you are an amazing flute player! I'm quite jealous of your playing! I'm 17 and don't play as well as you do. What kind of flute do you have?

  • Hi! Thanks for watching and commenting!!! I play on a Powell, but I played this piece on a Sonare that I only played for a couple of minutes before this performance. What a beautiful flute!!!! --Emma

  • Very Nice

  • i love this piece - and you play it wonderfull - thank you emma!

  • i have the same problem with keeping my fingers close to the keys. and i am working on this piece too!

  • Hi! I know I still have alot to work on. I just love to play!!! Thanks for listening and commenting!!!! --Emma

  • you're welcome! by any chance do you use the trevor wye books to develop your tone??

  • I don't use Mr. Wye's books, but I heard they are very good and have very clear instructions..

  • They are very good. I have braces, and my tone was good before I got them on. After I got them on, I used Trevor Wye's Book One: Tone, and my tone is so much better now! Your tone is already great, but if you're curious about his books they're great for not only developing tone, but as warm up exercises.

  • We started with T. Wye's Beginner's book part one, and we almost finished it. :)

  • The only thing that you should watch out for are your fingers. You should try to keep them closer to the keys. Other then that it was a good performance!

  • actually i learned that if you lift your fingers in sync with the music, it can improve control (for me it did). I originally kept my fingers very close to the keys but when i switched teachers to someone that teaches more of a higher level of students (hes a professor at the U of M) he told me about this technique and it worked perfectly. I know this may sound wrong because I've heard virtually every flautist say to keep your fingers close to the keys, but this method seemed to work the best.

  • I know what you mean. If it works, it works!!! --Emma

  • hahaha yeah exactly! If i have a problem with something, I literally will try anything to fix the problem. but good playing, Emma!!! im a big fan :)

  • A little too fast in the beginning, but great control!

  • GREAT JOB Emma, you are incredible!

  • And your dress is cute! I'm not a fan of pink but I actually like it with the green and yellow :)

  • Thanks!!! My Mom gets the dresses. I just can't stand when they're itchy!!!!

    --Emma :) :)

  • Awesome, Emma! You're only 9 and you already play like a professional! Way to go!

  • One again, Emma and I are working on the same piece. Just finished this one two weeks ago. Her low register is to die for! Thanks Emma and Mom for posting!
