David Archuletta is a very talented singer...
But "Angels" is co-written by Robbie Williams and it's very personal. It's about Robbie struggling with his life and basically self-destructing.
David's version sounds like an inspirational song... clearly he has no idea what it's really about and/or has never made the effort to listen to the original version.
@september2233 Of course he's heard the original version. It doesn't matter what the song meant to the singer/person who wrote it. What matters is how the song and the way the singer sang it affected the listeners. It's a great song and it's universal so anyone can connect to it. David showed what the song meant to him as a listener and it showed when he sang it. At least he isn't trying to copy Robbie like a lot of people do when they cover a song. David made it his own.
this performance never ceases to amaze me! I love the pace, the passion and intensity and David's vocals are mind blowing. He puts his whole being into his performances... this was a jaw-dropping performance of Angels.
David's BEST vocal - ever! When he gets to the bridge, it's just flawless... I wish he would open up and let his voice fly like that more often. It's beautiful.

At about 3:50, the male backup singer--after performing this song with David 53 times in concert--is still sooo amazed at him and how he brang it in Tulsa that he just shakes his head in disbelief. I'm with you, guy! David is unbelievable. He's gonna be bigger than Elvis before he's done.

Tulsa is David Cook's territory and I think that singing that word 'above' really started his competitive juices. The first time I watched this video was 7 months ago, and watching it again today I'm still having the same reaction. The tears in my eyes, the chills, the overwhelming feeling of pride that he at the time was 17 and able to stun even his background singer. David's album version of Angels had it's moments in the beginning but then the producers couldn't leave well enough alone and decided to overlay his vocals with too much superfluous production and instruments. They should've realized that David's vocals were enough to carry the song.
I thought his album performance was good but it didn't have as many runs as I wanted. His live performances always top his album performances for me anyways. I thought this was his best performance of this song, I was literally transfixed for 4 minutes.
Right on, scorpio888: the album version is NOT amazing; it is actually horrid compared to David's live versions of this splendid song. I'd like to see Archuleta take his next album's songs on-the-road before he records them in the studio. Or, maybe what we really need is a LIVE album!

The guy is amazing. You never hear him off pitch. He is one of the top 5 singers in the world. So much talent, and it is great he is so shy and kind to everybody, not a quality you see very often these days.
Well, it would help if more radio stations would play ALTNOY. What's up with that? It's a great, great song. My SF Bay Area stations stilll have NEVER played CRUSH even though it is heading toward double-platinum.

This performance is, by far, the best of Archuleta's Idol Tour efforts. As another poster said, from the 3:00 minute mark Archie is off-the-charts. All you have to do is check out the backup singer to know how good David was on that night. EPIC, indeed.
I was also quite disappointed with his album. Like Cmon' after watching these performances, we just have high expectations and in his album, you could so tell it was one of those -producersthinkthiswillsell kinda thing. The songs were good but it wasn't really Archuletar.

I'm actually disappointed in his album because he is so good in person. It doesn't capture the passion in his voice or his personality....not to mention they didn't give him much variation in song choices. Too much of the same thing.

Many weeks later and I'm still watching this video every day.
It just gives me CHILLS because he put SO MUCH passion into this song. It would be absurd to say David doesn't own this song. It outdoes the original by many miles. And that's why I love this kid. He's able to take ANYTHING and make it even better, just when everyone thought it couldn't get better.
I know. He was adorable too. He looked so nervous to be in a room full of all girls. He only sang one verse because he didn't have a lot of time. But we still enjoyed it.

I was also quite disappointed with his album. Like Cmon' after watching these performances, we just have high expectations and in his album, you could so tell it was one of those -producersthinkthiswillsell kinda thing. The songs were good but it wasn't really Archuletar.

This was truly an epic performance from David. I am sure the world is gonna blown away when they see what he is all about. So glad he is most likely singing this again on his own tour 2009. He owns this song!

This kid is really going to turn some heads when he goes on a LIVE tour in 2009, for he is one of the very few performers who sounds better in person.

I'm actually disappointed in his album because he is so good in person. It doesn't capture the passion in his voice or his personality....not to mention they didn't give him much variation in song choices. Too much of the same thing.

The guy is pretty awesome. Didn't particularly care for him at first but have gained respect for his vocal ability. This performance was flawless!!!!

I totally agree. This has got to be the gazillionth time I've watched this, and I still CAN'T GET OVER how incredible he sounds (and looks! hah). Seriously, the brilliance and beauty of David's voice is un-freakin-believable. He absolutely blows me away!!! I can't wait for 11/11 when his CD drops!! It's gonna be AMAZING!!!

Many weeks later and I'm still watching this video every day.
It just gives me CHILLS because he put SO MUCH passion into this song. It would be absurd to say David doesn't own this song. It outdoes the original by many miles. And that's why I love this kid. He's able to take ANYTHING and make it even better, just when everyone thought it couldn't get better.

I know. He was adorable too. He looked so nervous to be in a room full of all girls. He only sang one verse because he didn't have a lot of time. But we still enjoyed it.
