@fpagliato The Singled Four is not a power technique, it is a finesse technique for low to medium volume control. It is only one tool in the toolbox, you will need other techniques for loud situations. FYI, the word "dynamics" usually refers to volume differentials, being able to go from loud to soft, or soft to loud: i.e. "The dynamic range of this piece is huge, you must play letter A & B very loud, then letter C must be very
@geoffreydlang Very well said. If this clip were the *pass standard* as you suggested, less than 1/10 of one percent of instructional videos would pass!
gordy thanks, this is amazing. ive loved the "bounce\snap" or "bounce\bounce\snap" tecnique for years, but this is the next level, cant wait to work on this!.......ted
I studied with Fred Gruber for 3 years and this is similar to his "dah-dum" system. He taught similar forms as the "separate' and "continuous" techniques but never called it that. You've organized it and presented it in very understandable and accessible way and you play the hell out of it. I'm going to start practicing hands again! By the way, who did you study with?
@forbeat100 - Thanks Paul. I studied with Marv Dahlgren, Floyd Thompson, & Elliot Fine. All of them are great teachers, but they did not show me this technique. The stuff shown here is from my own R & D work. I just finished a book which shows how it can be used to play rudiments called "Morphing Double Strokes with Open/Close Technique". Contact me at my website if you are interested, GK-Music.com, and I'll explain how to get a copy. It's not up on the site yet.
Hey Gordy, I've been practicing this technique for a while and am just wondering if there's a particular grip that works best with it. ie. using french grip as opposed to a german grip. Great video and thanks!
Isn't this a technique drum corps have been using for ages in double stroking/triple stroking? One stroke with the wrist, a second/third with the fingers? Just seeing if I missed something or not.
I think your videos are the best. You start with simple ideas and then build upon them one step at a time. You make even MY brain understand. And that's saying something! Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video! Not only have these techniques greatly helped my playing (not that I'm anywhere near mastering them), but they've helped me enjoy playing and practicing once again.
This technique is strongest FINGER technique i saw in my life. And i saw a lot, because i am pro drummer and private instructor for 40 years. You built regular gladstone and moeller technique to a new level.DO YOU?
@pektus5 Thanks! Ed Shuaghnessy said he felt it's the first new thing to come along since the Moeller Technique was introduced over 80 years ago. Joe Morello told me @ PASIC 2003 that I had taken the Gladstone thing to a whole new level. CurrentIy I'm finishing the revisions to a new book that applies it to rudiments with extremely interesting results. I hope to have it available at my website sometime in 2011. (GK-Muisc.com)
there probably isn't one answer for this but does anyone with authority know which is more beneficial for preserving yourself physically - this or the moeller?
At what Quarter note value (time) would you consider the 4 note (per hand) to be clean or acceptable? Have the technique but getting the speed is the challenge isn't it? What is the secret to increasing the speed?
Its you master!

Presentation, explanation, execution, progression...all very well done.
Especially dug the opening audio / graphics and closing credit sequence.
YouTube would be a much smaller place if instructional videos would have to pass an audition..with this clip being the 'pass' standard.

Is there any prerequisite technique/grip that would be useful before trying this technique to make it more fluent ...or easier?

@matticus24yum develop your fingers like crazy dude.... those strokes that he gets JUST with his fingers are not easy to do at all.
