I know many German soldiers in WW2 did not want to fight, but many, many did. They may be German, but they are also Nazis, which are barbaric, nationalist, murderous people.
"Don't listen to Hollywood when you listen about WW2"
Is Stalingrad, the Holocaust, the Blitzkrieg invasions of Britain, France and many other countries, the POW death camps and other atrocities the Nazis are verified committing mere lies put out by "Hollywood"? I think not.
You have absolutely no respect for a single axis soldier do you, you don't even care if their brave or good or not you just immediately label them as "evil".
That was Hitler, and his whole army was not a army of Hitler's.
You have to learn how to respect men who died for their country, and any fucking soldier.
I have no respect for an axis soldier. The only WW2 soldier I hate more than a Nazi is a Jap.
Anyone who is willing to fight for Hitler is just as bad as Hitler. Now, those German soldiers that were forced to fight for Hitler and did not want to and hated Nazism are a different story, and even in this case, I will never respect someone's service to Nazi Germany.
I have many dead family members because of the Nazis and Japanese in WW2? Once you know the it is very hard to respect these people
They were not ordered to terrorize, rape and pillage the people they conquered, like they did. They were not ordered to brutally torture and murder POW's, and they were not ordered to take joy in it.
The only Nazi soldiers I can be indifferent to are the ones that despised Nazism and killing, and only killed in the battlefield. Even then, I can feel no compassion for one who holds Nazi ideology.
I can tell you've never heard of what it was like to live under the rule of these people.
Most Nazi soldiers were pretty much brain washed by hitler's propaganda shit and Japan soldiers were still bound to the code of bushido, which is to give no quarter and you should kill yourself or get killed if you lose a battle.
I still hate Nazis, they killed generations of humans just because of a dick-headed Nazi group used them as a scape goat for the lose of WW1 and the treaty of Versailles.
60 years exactly since WW2 started... god bless all the soldiers of the allied forces who fought to preserve liberty, freedom, and mankind. Thank you and may you rest in peace..
i am British and I'm proud of that. i have a deep respect for our armed forces, but i have a profound respect for the aussie forces if only because they always got the shity end of the stick. sent to fight the no hope battles, used like cannon fodder, treated like second rate soldiers but always beating the odds and coming out the other side with honour. id stand the line with an ANZAC any day of the week. i thank all those who have served and are serving their country. stand proud

Hearing people from all over the world recognising and respecting our troops just makes me so proud to be an Aussie. It makes me even more proud of the troops who fought in WW1 and WW2. Since when does the amount of soldiers lost in a war effect how good they fought? (I am not ridiculing the video) a good example of this is the war in Vietnam bettween the U.S. and the communist NVA. Yes the U.S. lost and around 60,000 american servicemen were killed, but they managed to kill 3,100,000 enemy troops. Talkabout a bitter sweet victory for the NVA. By the way very good video I really respect Ausralians 5/5
I an an American. My dad was drafted into the US army before Pearl Harbor. He was sent via British troop ship to Egypt. He saw duty in North Arfica, Italy, France & Germany. He told me the American, British and Germans were all good soldiers but the Australians and New Zealanders were better soldiers, They were country boys, more rugged and tougher. He told me the "Aussies" and the "Kiwis" were the bravest men he ever knew.
The funny thing is that I don't know anyone here in Oz that drinks Fosters beer. The working class beer favourite would have to be Victoria Bitter (VB) and maybe Carlton Draught. Queenslanders are fond of 4X (XXXX). The upper class beer would be Crown Larger, and the trendy beer drunk by the Gen X/Y middle class would be Pure Blonde, Heineken, Coopers & maybe Boags. Those ones are the main favourites here.
Total respect to the Australian armed services, no matter how some people would have you believe, we the ordinary working class people of the U.K. love, adore and respect the Aussie armed services. You an all the commonwealth bailed us out when we were desperate. No matter how our shite house politicians try to twist the truth, The British public are grateful. God bless Australia and the ANZAC forces always.
Yep, 330,000 Aussies fought in WW1(all volunteers) in Northern France, Belgium, Gallipoli(Turkey) & Palestine.
In 3 years (1915-1918) 60,000 were killed; 152,000 wounded & 4,000 taken prisoner (they captured 29,000 Germans & 40,000+ Turks). 960,000 Aussies fought in WW2 against Germany in Libya (Siege of Tobruk) & Egypt, and against Japan in the jungles & mountains of Papua New Guinea, Singapore & Borneo. 16,000 Aussies fought in Korea (1950-1953) & 50,000 Aussies fought in Vietnam (1965-1972).
My god! You are well informed aren't you? WELL DONE! I just thank God that it was not all in vain, because of these people( men & women), we are a free country today.
That's not a bad question to ask Empty. To find the answer you'd have to investigate the "Gallipoli Campaign" of WW1. It involved troops from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, India, France & Newfoundland & was fought on the European side of the Dardanelles Straight. It was intended to knock Turkey out of the war by capturing Istanbul (Constantinople) so that the Allies could access the Black Sea to open up supply lines to the Russians on the Eastern Front. It was Winston Churchill's idea.
I did not know that, and it's hard to pull war tivia out of a hat that I haven't heard before, lol, I give you props for that.
Most of my information for WWI is in reference to the American, British, French front along the Rhine, and ofcourse the Armenian Genocide. Did not know much about the Aussie involvement in Gallipoli...too bad they never reached Istanbul, I wonder how many Armenians could have been saved. I will definatley look into that. :)
Hope you don't mind indulging me here Empty, but I just love to share little known trivia about my home country- did you know that Australia had 5 Infantry Divisions and 18 Artillery Brigades on the Western Front between March 1916 & Nov 1918, and 14 Mounted Infantry Regiments (Australian Light Horse) that fought in Palestine between 1916-1918 very successfully after the allied failure of 1915 at Gallipoli? Aussie Lt Gen Monash even had command of 2 US divisions at St Quentin Canal 1918.
Americans i have simple question, for what freedom are u fighting :D ? u killed all indians took the lands of free and declaired its free country called america, ur grand grand parents where terrorists tell me im wrong lol...
Mate, I don't know if you were paying any attention, but this is a tribute to Australian soldiers of WW1 & 2. There are no Americans in this vid. Cheers.
It's a minor nit-picking from a Yank and might not even be completely accurate but ANZAC is a combination of Australian "Diggers" AND New Zealand"Kiwis". And recentlty the two governments have not seen eye-to-eye on all deployments. Not to imply anything than differing national interests which exist among the best of Allies. But this Yank is proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with Aussies as they have with us in WWI, WWII, Korea, Viet Nam and now in the Middle East.
Yes Sir, ANZAC refers to the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps that was formed in the early phase of the 2 nation's involvement in WW1, first actions being from 25th April 1915 in Turkey. There were 2 ANZAC Corps on the Western Front until the 5 Australian infantry Divisions of the AIF were united under one Corps HQ in May 1918 under Australian Lieutenant General Sir John Monash. The NZ Division continued to bolster the strength of various British Corps' it was attached to as they needed.
as it changes the world the Australians in the second world war they fought against Italians in North Africa... Now Australians and Italians fight together the talebanis in Afghanistan... Good-bye
I think that the Italian soldiers were smart in WW2 to not buy into Mussolini's silly plans of Empire. It is cool how many of the Italian POWs that were interned in Australia did not want to go home when the war ended, but "escaped" so that they could stay! Many later became Australian citizens. (LOL).
I am a soldier paratrooper of the brigade Folgore, to El Alamein we are also made there honor against the Australians, however the empires it is true they don't serve to anything, Italy is a very rich nation with a level of life stop, if we had had the empire it was our turn to give to eat to so much non Italian people hahahaha... Good-bye LOL
it's funny watching these australian vids and americans saying how good they were in the war and how many people died, im still looking for an english movie
it's funny watching these australian vids and americans saying how good they were in the war and how many people died,
One thing that pissed off a lot of people was Time Life saying how American won the war. Canadian fought in WW2 and liberated Holland. Ever since then the Dutch has really loved Canadians. The Americans didn't even get involved in the war until a few years after it started. The sat back and made money selling arms.
An interesting fact is that more Aussies died (61,000) in action in WW1 than US troops, slightly more Canadians were killed (64,000?) in WW1 than there were Aussies. I think that it was no mistake that the Australian Corps and Canadian Corps were selected to make the decisive allied punch of WW1 at the Battle of Amiens in 1918. It does give weight to the claim that the Aussies and Canadians were arguably the toughest 2 infantry corps of the war.
In all honest I didn't hear much in school when I was growing up when it comes to Australia. I remember being a child and listing to WW1 vets in the gym on remembrance day.I would think that Canada and Australia have good relations. It is one country that I would love my sons to see when they are old enough. You have a lot of churches in Australia so I would want my sons to be in with a church group. Very interesting information. Peace mate!
That's expected, Australia is small fry on the world scene. A quick summary is: 330,000 volunteer Aussie troops fought in WW1 at Gallipoli (Turkey), Northern France, Belgium & Palestine (with 5 infantry divisions, 18 artillery brigades, 14 Light Horse (mounted infantry) regiments & 3 Australian Flying Corps squadrons). 61,000 KIA, 154,000 WIA, 4,000 POW (they captured 29,000Germans & 40,000+ Turks).
WW2 960,000 Aussies fought. Main campaigns were North Africa (Siege of Tobruk, Bardia, El Alamein) & Papua New Guinea (Kokoda Track, Gona-Buna, Wau, Lae, Wewak, Salamaua), fighting Japan.
Aussies were involved in the Malayan Emergency & Indonesian Confrontation (1949-1966).
16,000 Aussies were in Korea; 50,000 Aussies in Vietnam between 1965-1972 (500 killed, 2,400 wounded) in Phuoc Tuy province, Bien Hoa (1965) & Long Phuoc, major battles being Long Tan, Binh Ba and FSBs Coral & Balmoral.
There are many nations that I would NEVER want my sons to travel to. However as I said I would love to have my sons see Australia when they grow up.I will share this information with them. Thanks!
You sound like a teacher. I bet you are a school teacher.
Every Australian I have met that has moved to Canada was a decent human being. I met an Australian couple on the ferry going from Vancouver to Victoria and they were a wonderful couple. Always polite and respectful. Your nation has fought many wars and done well but most important your nation has raised decent human beings.
Thanks for the info. Australia may be a small fry but so is Canada. We do not have a very big military. We are a huge nation as far as land mass but we only have approx 30 million people. The only thing that I have heard here in Canada is that Aussies are crazy and good fighters. Lol!. Never sell yourselves short. I do not know anyone that is apposed to Australia.
Hey there mate. You'd be amazed at some of the battles the Aussies fought in WW1. The Aussies always tout Gallipoli, but Northern France and Palestine is where they did a lot of damage to the German and Turkish armies. Australia played the lead role in the Battle of Amiens, the decisive battle of WW1, on 8th August 1918, with 15 Aussie Infantry Brigades(40,000+ men) on the move at once. German General Ludendorff called that day "the Black day of the German army for the history of the war".
We are kin. As a Kiwi Officer once said to Rommel: "You attack one country you attack the entire British Empire". Though the empire is well in twilight, I still believe that blood is thicker than water, no matter what people and politicians say. Kind regards.
Something that I find striking about this vid is the amazing difference between the deportment of the WW1 diggers and the diggers of WW2. You can't mistake the photos of the WW1 boys. The WW2 diggers seem much more "disciplined" and stiff as far as their drill goes. Very curious to know why that is.
That was one of the most OUTSTANDING and POWERFUL videos Ive seen. - It truly makes me PROUD AS HELL to be an Aussie.
I was never a serviceman ( short of cadets ) -but if the time ever comes - then I'll be PROUD to stand up and take up arms to protect this country, my family, and our proud ANZAC history. - Speaking of history, I left a video response entitled " The last ANZAC " as aa way of expressing my personal pride in the country. because nobody in the media ever BOTHERED.
Hi there mate. Did you know that during WW1 at the Battle of St Quentin Canal in France, 2 Australian Infantry Divisions & 2 US Divisions broke through the "impenetrable" Hindenburg Line on 25th September 1918. The war was over in less than two months. Kind regards. Jonno.
im a former digger and proud to be one of manny who served in diff parts of this world i did it for my family and yours as we all did and do all soliders of the world do that proud digger
So who's the artist of the song? I want to download it to play at my brother's funeral. He was killed in the middle east in a patrol and their ASLAV got ambushed. I love australia and my brother and all aussie soldiers. Good on ya mates.
So sorry to here of your loss my friend...may I ALSO add my deepest condolences mate, to you and your family as well.
Now, I dont know you from a bar of soap and visa-versa - however as an Australian, your loss is mine brother. He's earned his rest now and is the company of ALL the ANZACS before him.
A sad day indeed mate. - however I am humbled to have crossed the path of a man who's brother was prepaired to fight for, ( and sadly ) passed away for his country.
I deeply thank you for your concern, my Australian brother. It is good to know that there are true Australians still fighting for the ANZAC spirit, once again...thank you.
"Can You Hear Australia's Heroes Marching? is a national war memorial song and a tribute to the ANZAC spirit of mateship, courage, and sacrifice." - comment by the author of the song
My dad was one of the Americans who helped liberate Holland, which is where our family came from. He was proud to be a member of the US Army as I was when I served in Viet Nam.
Despite some leftist elements in the U.S. we are always ready to defend freedom.
this song inspired me so much and this number is beautifull we hollanders are happy whit the austalian and other HEROES now im netherlands if THE HEROES not came im was now germans but im dutch because THE HEROES killed the intruders!!!!
Samuel Johnson made this famous pronouncement that patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel on the evening of April 7, 1775. He doesn't provide any context for how the remark arose, so we don't really know for sure what was on Johnson's mind at the time.
However, many feel that that Johnson was not indicting patriotism in general, only false patriotism. It's amazing how someone from Germany will add such a comment on a video honoring Australia's war dead. My advice to you is, stick to subjects that relate to your own country.
I got to thinking. Why would someone from Germany make a comment like you did on an Australian video. Then looking on the internet, I found a comment atributed to you. The following comment is by munchvan...
no country is the best... i mean i think that it is great that you are proud of your country and everything but when it all comes down to it... no ones the best and greatest anymore.
thank you its greatly appreciated. i feel incredibly patriotic for australia and those heroes over seas and within our shores. GOD BLESS AUSTRALIA!!! i always have that feeling in my heart of pride for australia.
I am American and I've been to Australia 3 times. I love it there, it is beautiful and I when I go there i can feel the similar feelings of freedom in the 2 countries. I am so glad we are allies.
america has produced some brilliant people and i am proud to say we are allies i respect her troops as much as our own. i ask that we are allowed to be a free and independant country though, but with good allies.
Can You Hear Australia's Heroes Marching?' is a national war memorial song and a tribute to the ANZAC spirit of mateship, courage and sacrifice. The song is timeless and honours the memory of those who have died in the service and defence of Australia in war. The song does not glorify war or endorse conflict of any kind. The song simply highlights the sacrifice of many Australians who died in the service and defence of our country in war. (Comment by Peter Barnes - author of the song)
I thought to inform you that a movie based upon the bombing of Darwin will be out next year. It's called "Australia" and it is being produced by 20th Century Fox. It's sure to be a smash hit.
america only won, because, russia got them from the east, we got them from west, italy had south. only north, but theres shit in the north!

Australians where involved in war ? o.O never heard
Minofin 3 years ago
Yep, 330,000 Aussies fought in WW1(all volunteers) in Northern France, Belgium, Gallipoli(Turkey) & Palestine.
In 3 years (1915-1918) 60,000 were killed; 152,000 wounded & 4,000 taken prisoner (they captured 29,000 Germans & 40,000+ Turks). 960,000 Aussies fought in WW2 against Germany in Libya (Siege of Tobruk) & Egypt, and against Japan in the jungles & mountains of Papua New Guinea, Singapore & Borneo. 16,000 Aussies fought in Korea (1950-1953) & 50,000 Aussies fought in Vietnam (1965-1972).

why didn't they try to stop the Armenian Genocide if they were in turkey?
EmptyBottleTherapies 2 years ago
That's not a bad question to ask Empty. To find the answer you'd have to investigate the "Gallipoli Campaign" of WW1. It involved troops from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, India, France & Newfoundland & was fought on the European side of the Dardanelles Straight. It was intended to knock Turkey out of the war by capturing Istanbul (Constantinople) so that the Allies could access the Black Sea to open up supply lines to the Russians on the Eastern Front. It was Winston Churchill's idea.
wattlebough 2 years ago
I did not know that, and it's hard to pull war tivia out of a hat that I haven't heard before, lol, I give you props for that.
Most of my information for WWI is in reference to the American, British, French front along the Rhine, and ofcourse the Armenian Genocide. Did not know much about the Aussie involvement in Gallipoli...too bad they never reached Istanbul, I wonder how many Armenians could have been saved. I will definatley look into that. :)
EmptyBottleTherapies 2 years ago
Hope you don't mind indulging me here Empty, but I just love to share little known trivia about my home country- did you know that Australia had 5 Infantry Divisions and 18 Artillery Brigades on the Western Front between March 1916 & Nov 1918, and 14 Mounted Infantry Regiments (Australian Light Horse) that fought in Palestine between 1916-1918 very successfully after the allied failure of 1915 at Gallipoli? Aussie Lt Gen Monash even had command of 2 US divisions at St Quentin Canal 1918.

I have to say, I was looking for the Russian "Patriotic Song" and I came across this.
I'm sure they were all brave men and should be remembered dependent on the cause, but this song is just terrible..

But this Yank is proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with Aussies as they have with us in WWI, WWII, Korea, Viet Nam and now in the Middle East.
oldscout379 3 years ago

Good-bye
normannodelsud 3 years ago
I think that the Italian soldiers were smart in WW2 to not buy into Mussolini's silly plans of Empire. It is cool how many of the Italian POWs that were interned in Australia did not want to go home when the war ended, but "escaped" so that they could stay! Many later became Australian citizens. (LOL).
wattlebough 3 years ago
I am a soldier paratrooper of the brigade Folgore, to El Alamein we are also made there honor against the Australians, however the empires it is true they don't serve to anything, Italy is a very rich nation with a level of life stop, if we had had the empire it was our turn to give to eat to so much non Italian people hahahaha... Good-bye LOL

One thing that pissed off a lot of people was Time Life saying how American won the war. Canadian fought in WW2 and liberated Holland. Ever since then the Dutch has really loved Canadians. The Americans didn't even get involved in the war until a few years after it started. The sat back and made money selling arms.

WilliamHBonney55 2 years ago

Peace mate!
WilliamHBonney55 2 years ago
That's expected, Australia is small fry on the world scene. A quick summary is: 330,000 volunteer Aussie troops fought in WW1 at Gallipoli (Turkey), Northern France, Belgium & Palestine (with 5 infantry divisions, 18 artillery brigades, 14 Light Horse (mounted infantry) regiments & 3 Australian Flying Corps squadrons). 61,000 KIA, 154,000 WIA, 4,000 POW (they captured 29,000Germans & 40,000+ Turks).
wattlebough 2 years ago

WilliamHBonney55 2 years ago 2
Thanks for the info. Australia may be a small fry but so is Canada. We do not have a very big military. We are a huge nation as far as land mass but we only have approx 30 million people. The only thing that I have heard here in Canada is that Aussies are crazy and good fighters. Lol!. Never sell yourselves short. I do not know anyone that is apposed to Australia.
WilliamHBonney55 2 years ago
the australians were a HUGE help during mostly all of the wars that we fought in and i thank u guys for that
stupidkids5 3 years ago 3
Hey there mate. You'd be amazed at some of the battles the Aussies fought in WW1. The Aussies always tout Gallipoli, but Northern France and Palestine is where they did a lot of damage to the German and Turkish armies. Australia played the lead role in the Battle of Amiens, the decisive battle of WW1, on 8th August 1918, with 15 Aussie Infantry Brigades(40,000+ men) on the move at once. German General Ludendorff called that day "the Black day of the German army for the history of the war".
wattlebough 3 years ago
All i can say to my Australian brothers is thank you for your sacrifices, And it is an honour that you fight by our side again.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them. We will remember them.

Very curious to know why that is.
wattlebough 3 years ago
Perhaps because prior to WW1 Australia had a limited millitary tradition and culture.

To Wablief,
My dad was one of the Americans who helped liberate Holland, which is where our family came from. He was proud to be a member of the US Army as I was when I served in Viet Nam.
Despite some leftist elements in the U.S. we are always ready to defend freedom.

"Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel."
Samuel Johnson
(British essayist, biographer, lexicographer and a critic of English Literature)
munchvan 4 years ago
Samuel Johnson made this famous pronouncement that patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel on the evening of April 7, 1775. He doesn't provide any context for how the remark arose, so we don't really know for sure what was on Johnson's mind at the time.
revelation100 4 years ago
However, many feel that that Johnson was not indicting patriotism in general, only false patriotism. It's amazing how someone from Germany will add such a comment on a video honoring Australia's war dead. My advice to you is, stick to subjects that relate to your own country.
revelation100 4 years ago
I got to thinking. Why would someone from Germany make a comment like you did on an Australian video. Then looking on the internet, I found a comment atributed to you. The following comment is by munchvan...
