just curious why didnt they just reverse the locos out with the plow and floor it? ikd how it all works as we dont have snow in Australia and where we do trains dont go near it.
The plow has a V on the front so when it gets buried like that it acts like a fish hook and can't be pulled back. It's obvious by the excavator that they've been working on this drift for a while. Oh, and 6 engines x 3,000 hp each would be 18,000 hp total. They come up to 5,000 hp which would equal 30,000 hp! You can tell at the end they were going WFO!
there is too much snow packed around the sides of the loco's for the traction motors to overcome the friction... After they bring in the other engines, and move them out one by one, you can see how the snow was compressed against the stuck engines on the non-camera side..
Not heavy, that's pretty powdery stuff, but it has prolly been sitting for a while and has set, thus being very hard to get through. No amount of power or momentum is going to get through that.
Er, why would a fifteen-foot snowdrift decide to melt just because some guy parked a railroad engine or six in it? It's only going to melt if something heats it.
To the extent that the exterior panels become warm to the touch? Even if they do, they're still not going to melt any significant amount of snow, as demonstrated by the fact that they were *still* stuck, even after they'd been sitting there long enough for the railroad to hire a backhoe to start digging them out!
Nope both wrong, the front two locos are SD45-T with the air intake on the lower instead of top part for cleaner air while traveling through tunnels. Can't quite tell what the DNGO engine is, but it is a GP.
You probably should have brought the rotory plow.

Damn, over 10,000 ponies and they still get stuck! That looks like some wet, heavy snow!

You can have a bazillion horsepower, but if you don't have traction, ya' ain't got nothin'

Wow, I would have thought after sitting there idling for a few minutes, the snow would have melted enough to let them move again.

You've got to be kidding. Those engines generate a lot of heat!
