This video is absolutely the BOMB. The vocals, drums, guitars, and esp the bass. It's def. an Alembic bass but it sounds like Cordell Boogie, but boogie played a fretless Rick if not mistaken. If anyone can clear that up I would appreciate it. It really sound like boogie on bass being extra extra funky. I am hooked on this one for right now. RIP to Gary. There was nobody like him. Ahhhh those were the days, but they are re-lived by many on here everyday. Thanks for a great post.
they got wild outfits, cat's wearing diapers, and it's the baddest, tragic devastating testament you'll ever hear. I woke up from a dream singing ...lord knows i meant no wrong, hearing my mother call....rock hall of fame don't mean shit. my partner laid the gem on me last night after we played a killer.....you play something too deep and beautiful, you'll chase 'em out the room. this is too real
Im sorry people, but this has to be one of the greatest songs ever had.....Do you REALLY hear how he makes that guitar SCREAM first two minutes of the track???....I mean I listen to this song EVERY DAY, & I STILL get goosebumps when I listen to it.....So much emotion came from those guys when they played....Damn, I was born in '77
These cats are way underated, one of the greatest bands of ALL time. Shider and Hampton can hang with any guitar players EVER! BAD ASS PERIOD! Long live the funk.
That was not a guitar battle...it was harmony at it's finest...orchestrated to the finest point in the musical atmosphere in a way neither bach or bethoveen could handle it!
So I've read that Ronnie James Dio came up with the "devil horns" gesture sometime around 1980-81, yet here I see George Clinton(?) doing it at 6:45, in 1978. Hey, what gives?
@marcosmarcosgali What gives is George was doing it since the early 70's I remember going to his concert in 77 and we were doing it then. It was the P-Funk sign originally.
This is probably the funkiest song ever made a song orignated by Jerome Bigfoot Brailey this is truly funk at it's finest this was the 2nd song I learned how to play after The Tubes Tip of my Tongue I had the Hardcore Jollies album with the live performance from NYC in 76 I was only 3 years old the year was 83 and I was in my basement kickin my drums hard playing Cosmic Slop all I can say is thank you Dad for making sure I was well rounded with my music that's why I have the appreciation for it
Go check them out, George got kicked all in the ass on this one. That singer they got King Raymond Green is a beast, and their guitar player smokes too! Check them out.
talk about the show, the diapers, the embellishments all you want. then you hear a call for mother. The band is stinky, and the fellas are wailing the blues. Shit's frightening. The bass sounds like an earth-moving machine, screaming, no kind of vaudeville act, doing work!
@OrgenaII Say it is not so!!! : o(( Bless that Brother's soul for health and recovery. I just heard that George's mother died in the fall or early winter?? Is that true? I am a Clone of Funkenstein!
One of the best groups from the 70's and still funking. I still remember being at one of their shows where they threw weed in the crowd. Everybody was funking after that.
guy with the red hat in beginning the introducin the song is George. eddie hazel is not with them during this time. check out older footage to see eddie doin his thing.
i saw them in baltimore Md at rams head live last year and they sucked. the guy is running around on stage in a diaper. maybe cool in 1975, but pretty pathetic
now. looked like they had 35 people on stage and they all sucked. they were dressed in costumes to divert the fact they
are way past their prime, are no longer good musicans. George Clinton just stood on stage and didn;t say or sing a word. i guess he was the draw. i was disappointed.
I hapnd 2b @ the same show, and I went for the MUSIC !! Not 2c if they were dressn the same, or had the same/new gimmicks...we of age know those days are gone, yet we still visit with our funky friends when they come in town..like all of us, we have family we CANT STAND, but when the funk visits, we extend our love..the Funkateers are sorta like that - we STAND for them - thats why they're in demand @ shows and on TV.........if u aint gonna get it on..... peace
Incredible - for me, this is THE best version they ever played. Bernie's ominous keys and Jerome's driving drums make this really stand out, and Mike's guitar tone is perfect. There's something magic that other versions didn't quite capture. I never get sick of this one.
Listen carefully, Mike's guitar cuts out at both 6:28 and 6:43. But even THIS somehow works, and sounds like he's letting Garry and Boogie (respectively) cut in for a sec! That night, they were MEANT to play this perfectly.
There is a serious guitar battle going on up on that stage and it's splendid to watch. This is musical artistry at its best. I've played this video twenty times and every time I see it ... it's like the first time. I was always in tuned to the clever, funny, and usually blunt truth in their lyrics but these guys were great musicians. It's tragic but not surprising they haven't been elevated to the highest level in terms of historical recognition.
@Alvin276 WHAT? You sleeping real funkateers know Parliament Funkadelic will always reign as the number ! funk rock band ever, historically, until now, one of the most sampled groups in hip hop, help create G-funk. I lived it Parliament has has there reign and were at the top for a long time. Believe me they are highly recognized.
Holy Mackerel, Seriously, I have heaps of p-funk footage and that was hot!!! Michael is a bad ass g-player but it looks like Gary's pretty hot too! Robert
No, that is Michael Hampton. He came on the seen after Hazel started trippin too much on acid plus getting in some legal trouble, if I understand correctly. Hampton and Hazel were both amazing at what that did for P-Funk. RIP Eddie Hazel.....
As for the bass player..it looks like Rodney Curtis from Baltimore...he liked playing the Alembic and MusicMan bass models that gave him that fat ass ballsy sound...sometime in 79-81 Boogie took time off to chill....
this is actually boogie playing bass on this song. he played cosmic slop and bop gun on this tour, though he was using skeet's alembic. that's why there is that similar sound
You know, after watching this I can see why certain people walked out at PFunk in the 70s saying "they've gone too far to the Rock side". Personally, I'm loving it!
I hear ya bro. In my opinion rock is what made Funkaelic. Rock mixed in with the bass plus Bernie workin' the keyboards and all of the outstanding vocals....Man, they were great, no doubt.
This is the 1 that turned me on....the opening and the last 4 mins fuck me up everytime

alvin, in terms of recognition, im not sure that they havent?
from what i seen virtually all real musicians who don't use prefabs rate these guys in the stellar and otherworldly region.
and they won some lifetime award i forget the name.
and their cult following is stronger than the grateful dead from what i can tell.
so the triple of nods from their musical peers, the establishment/biz, and the permanent gratitude of their fans seems like recognition to me. :)
leet512 3 years ago
There is a serious guitar battle going on up on that stage and it's splendid to watch. This is musical artistry at its best. I've played this video twenty times and every time I see it ... it's like the first time. I was always in tuned to the clever, funny, and usually blunt truth in their lyrics but these guys were great musicians. It's tragic but not surprising they haven't been elevated to the highest level in terms of historical recognition.
