I've loved Ronson's economy and his ability to "serve the song" since the 1970s. Here he's supporting (as he usually was) rather than spotlight-hogging, reproducing the Fripp sounds from the record. The sustain's coming from an E-Bow, and electronic device that electronically mimics the bowing action of a violin. You can see him palming it in the close-up near the beginning of the song, before he puts it aside for the more conventional picked parts later.
i am from hull, where mick was from and the memorial to him is fucking pathetic. its just an old fucked up summer hut that looks like an old shed. mick deserves a much more suitable memorial like a gold statue!
Bowie had some fine guitarists, and maybe shoulda used them on some recordings, but live, it shoulda ALWAYS been Ronno! Actually the only other guy he shoulda had do jack was SRV...
i live in hull where mick ronson came from. his memorial is a run down shed!! it is a disgrace. family, friends and fans of mick are trying to get a bronze statue in his honour. a true legend.
ummm...drugs?...it's really a shame mickt9....he looked really good here...it was a constant battle...the dude could play...especially wrapping leads around a rythym....nobody better...
Alcohol would probably be more accurate. He died from liver cancer I believe, Ian Hunter has commented on the fact he had a drinking problem. I'm not saying he never did drugs I'm sure he probably did his share back in the day but I think the booze was his main vice.
I grew up a Bowie disciple as many others did but present day a lot of what we loved came from Mick Ronson,Bowie is a musical vampire,he picks a new guitarist and when he's sucked all their best stuff out he moves on to a new one,Ronson,CarlosStevie Ray etc, very Shrewd, Gona post a lesson on the outro solo of Moonage daydream this year .Check it out later.
c'mon...he wasn't a vampire...he wrote the songs...I think he would say that there was no one better than Mick to play his songs...Mick fucked up his own life...and that's so sad 'cause he was great...Bowie wasn't killing himself so what is he to do?...
It kinda sucks that Bowie does that. But some might realize that people have great moments of creativity and then fizzle out. So maybe Bowie was on that philosophy.
BUT there are some who are capable of being consistantly good/great throughout there life/careers, true talents so to speak, and it seems this Mr Ronson was one of them....
Also Bowie may have wanted an ever changing/different/new sound so to acheive that sometimes it takes all new musicians.....
This concert was what converted me to playing a tele :) Ronson is my favorite guitarist of all time. I'm a big David Bowie fan and will listen to anything by him, but Ronson had this magic behind his music. He was definitely extremely underrated.
not underrated by guitarists...especially ones who play a Tele...the beauty of Ronson was the way he could play around the melody...alot of guitarists can play power chords....his style has not been seen since...and I don't think it ever will...there are some actual Japanese tribute bands to Mick...heh...
Interesting that he changed from the Les Paul to the Telecaster.
I saw an interview with Scott Gorham from Thin Lizzy who was another Les Paul player, He said he changed over to a Fender in later years, because it only weighs half as much as a Les Paul.
As soon as Ronson was gone, Bowie sucked... Grab some bootlegs, and even in 1974 his show sounded like some cheesy vegas show... He should never have let Ronson get away
I think bowie still had some pretty good stuff throughout the rest of the 70's but 80's+ it goes to shit. In their prime him and Ronson were fucking gods.
We should imagine what Mick got in the post from Bowie's solicitors beforehand..
No drinking. No drugs (drugs test before show) .. No shagging the audience because David is married to a model.. No talking to David because Iman doesn't think you're classy enough.. Whatever David tells Brian May to tell you is the truth.. Brian May will unplug your guitar if you become too working-class..
You Will Not Be Allowed To Improvise Ever Ever During The TV Section Of This Concert...
I certainly like Bowie's stuff with Ronson better than Bowie by himself. And I like Ronson better with Bowie than Ronson by himself. The whole is better than the parts. Go figure.
Bowie had a spotty record later and put out some crappy albums too but never with Mick. Every album that Mick Ronson worked on with Bowie is a work of genius.
It's true.. Bowie became a wank-yank and stopped taking chances.. He wised up a bit, but much later, when he realised how shallow and unappreciative american audiences and listeners were but that's where the money was so he had to take it up the hole like every other greedy fucker.. He was actually taking it up the hole before becoming greedy as well, so at least he is consistent..
David Bowie and Mick Ronson together is pure majic they should have never split, and to also have Brain May from Queen up there at that performance was heaven, and R.I.P. Mick Ronson and Freddie Mercury!!! God Bless Music
listen to this and then listen to ? and the Mysterians doing "96 Tears" - really similar bass line. This is a great vid. Love the sustainer in Mick's hand - didn't know he used one... nice Telecaster. RIP Mick & Freddie...
Great upload, thanks for posting this!

what is that intriguing contraption Ronno is using on his bridge? I'm assuming that's how he's getting that sustain and tone.
GODHAND42 11 months ago
@GODHAND42 It's called an EBow, just google it! If you're a guitar player buy one. If you're not a guitar player, buy a guitar AND an EBow.

'darn right, Brian should have had Mick as focal point. He knew it was Mick's last big performance before he died.

Great that Brian May held his place in Rhythm and let Mick be the focal guitarist

Yeah, right I guess he stopped taking chances after working with Ronson. Low is so much more commercial than Ziggy Stardust. You are such an idiot.
ivankaramasov 2 years ago
I imagine this guy(BWFSabian) was talking about "Tonight" and "Never Let Me Down" right after "Let's Dance".
I think his later stuff (late 70's)was much better than the earlier.
That's just my feel though.

i don't think Bowie "screwed him over"... Bowie changed personnel and personas all the time; musicians are allowed to do that, you know.
remember that they (Bowie and The Spiders) toured on the road for over two years, and friends for a lot longer.
Ronson did (uncredited) studio work on "Space Oddity" (1969), Bowie's second album.
yes, Bowie and Ronson were giants and kings together...
