I'm thinking about transferring from pf to double entering in extemp and impromtu after my partner graduates I'v placed alot in pf and im second speaker do transitioning pf debaters work well in extemp and impromtu or do they kinda flail around?
@MicahAP514 At my school pretty much all of our pf students are extemp kids. And we're very well off in both. So I guess the correct answer is yes. As long as you're able to get used to the new rules and all, it most likely won't be too big of a stretch for you. Then again all people are different, so it may be different for you than it is for the few kids at my school who do both. We also don't have impromtu in my state. So it shouldn't be too hard, but then again, it just depends on you.
A good extemp. speakers ability to memorize these small statistics (such as is stated in this speech,"...9% of India's population is muslim".) is just absolutely astounding to me. I'm scared now.
This guy won state. I don't think that anyone should be criticizing him about how he did it, and belittling his accomplishment by saying, "oh wow my school is so amazing cause we only have 35 minutes to prep and we have to do a 7 minute speech." Get over yourselves. This speech was given just minutes after finding out that he won, and hours after he had originally given the speech, so I'm not about to judge him for needing to use a piece of paper to site sources.
he says imperative A LOT! also, in illinois you get 45 prep minutes and a 6 minute speech. In missouri, we get 30 prep minutes and a 7 minute speech. we haz it harder
I just want to point out a couple things about this speaker. First, he has one the state championship in EX & IMP multiple times. He knows what he is doing. Second, these videos are from the awards ceremony which takes place hours after his final round of competition. In Illinois, competitors generally don't use a notecard/sheet of paper, but in order to perform for the camera he used a sheet of paper to remind himself of his sources.
Well, his intro was very good... So, it shouldn't matter as long as it's relevant to the topic and/or what you're trying to get across to the audience. And I'm not sure since I live in Colorado lol. =]
@dtvaughn Really? Wow, that's very different from Maryland. It sounds like Illinois Extempers have it easy compared to us. We have 30 minutes for a seven minute long speech.
did he just conclude that India with it's 9% Muslim population makes it more likely for terrorist attacks. Sounds like religous sterotyping and discrimination to me, thus should not have won
I know right? Watching all the state champions from Illinois from the 2007-2008 school year, I feel many of them don't fit the criteria of someone who should win. He is DEFINETLY one of them.
i have a speech in 4 days. thanks for posting, this was just the confidence booster i needed

It's amazing how close the ties with stand up comedy are with Extemporaneous speaking

Great.
Im doing one for my debate class on "Should the U.S. miliary require military service, as many other countries do?"
I said NO.
The hardest part is the conclusion 0.o

This is great. I like his introduction. Humorous extemp speeches are so much easier to watch.

Bush can't say nuclear and he cant say material.

You can see him shake. He was obviously nervous.

Was it really necessary for the intro to drag out to almost 2 min before getting to the actual question? How long are the speeches in this state?

@HeirArkon Extemp speeches are six minutes long in the Illinois State competitions. They are given forty-five minutes to prep.

the state champion used notes during his speech? come on.
zippitydoodah143 2 years ago
It's extemporaneous...it's protocol to use note.

Actually it's optional. It looks better if you don't have it.

he explained that he gave the speech "a long time ago", I presume when he actually did the competition.

Odd, that he kept criticizing Bush's pronunciation of nuclear, while continuing to stumble over the word proliferation.
