what has happened is that people have gotten so used to saying two thousand that they cant stop saying it now for each new year.. however have noticed that twenty twelve has been said quite a bit by so far on the tele so wondering whether finally we've finally made the change!

There is no correct way. People used to say nineteen hundred and ten or nineteen ten.

If you say "the second world war started in nineteen forty one" or "the second world war started in nineteen hundred and forty one", both are correct.

I say twenty ten myself, but what does it matter what other people say? Two thousand ten is still a normal way to say it.

How would you say the year 1900? 19 hundred, not 19 00.

The 2000's we switched from the 1900's way of saying the year. Now we're asking everyone to switch back. Why is anyone surprised if people are confused.
