#5 is a residual oil, what's leftover from the refinery that can't be refined further. It also runs on recycled motor oil. There is a large supply and less demand these days for both.
Great Video Skip! I had the chance to see this awesome train and capture some video in Minnesota on 9-26-08. Too bad they don't make trains like this anymore.....
Why dont we just start a fund group and start building Improved Steam Locomotives? After all they are much simpler than todays electrics (no endless looms of wires) and diesels (again PIPES and WIRES mania)
I chased the 3985 this am across part of Neb. Due to the darkness and even more smoke than normal I was unable to get any pictures. But man did she look and sound good.
very good video, 5 stars for you, I hope the economy does not affect too much these activities and "challenger" remain in operation for many years more
I doubt coal will ever burn in it again. Because of the hot cinder, brush fire issues. I remember a excursion in the late 80's when it started 5 of 6 brush fires on a run and PO'd a whole load of volunteer fire departments who had to put them out. I rember driving home along a still smouldering RR right-of-way Leading to it being banned anywhere out of Wyoming thus leading to the conversion to oil or at least part of it
I understand that. My family took an excursion in Japan pulled by a coal-fired steam locomotive, and the soot and particles were indeed intense. And that was a pretty tiny locomotive. But the engineers, who were in their 50s or 60s, sure were in good shape...
awesome steam engine. and a great video.

You or your kids will never see oil run out. Just the known reserves are immeasurable.
Put the enviromental idiots aside and start drilling our own.
