How did you teach him that walk where he takes a step and then touches the ground with his beak. He reminds me of a little surveyor measuring a distance.
@mantis914 I didn't teach her that, but I think she'd doing it to mock the knocking sound when people knock on the office door. She often does it after people come in or out of the door.
Well Sammy had me tricked for sure! hee. I thought he was sipping something up. (my macaw loves looking into our mugs, so we put a grape or two in there for her, but she just tosses it out. I think what she really wants is to be surprised by the different things we toss in there :P>
Great video... thanks! If you have any hints about training birds to add to our blog or our site we'd be interested in hearing from you... (contact us form on the site) ;-)
HAHA who can tell where they pick up their antics from? You are sooo x 1000 lucky you breed birds! Almost 500!? I have... 10 including 6 chickens 2 tiels a budgie and a lory. My lorikeet is my favorite- she sleep in my room and does everything with me. She recently learnt to fly which is exciting. I want to breed my tiels when I get an aviary. I've only bred budgies and quails before, so it'll be a good experience! My male tiel loves babies of any species, so I reckon he'll be a good daddy.
I've never seen a pet chattering lory on video! Thanks for posting this :D I have a rainbow lorikeet and two tiels. My lorikeet mkes a gurgling sound while reaching into cups too! Has your had apricot nectar? Mine's obsessed!
I'm not sure where birds pick up the gurgling sound! I've heard one of our greys recently making "pop-pop" sounds, like popping bubbles! Where she got that, I have NO idea! For food, our lories eat powder nectar and liquid nectar daily. We have almost 500 birds, and they get fresh fruit, although they are picky and don't eat all the options given to them. The lories get no nuts or seeds! Lories have become my favorite because they are the most playful - but they're the messiest too!
No, he is a yellow-back chattering lory. They are pretty rare. My family breeds them here in St. Louis. They are very clowny and playful, and they like to hop. They are known for mimmicking strange sounds, like crying, laughter, doors creaking, drinking sounds, sneezes, etc. He can be pretty surprising with what he picks up! Lories aren't known for their talking abilities, but that of course, can change with the time that you spend working with them!
It is so true that they pick up on the strangest things.

Wow, the lory I work with (at a zoo) is obsessed with cups too! He likes to chase and tackle them though, and the same with water bottles.
