China and Taiwan claim the Diaoyu islands (Senkaku in Japanese) have been a part of Chinese territory since at least 1534. They acknowledge that Japan took control of the islands in 1894-1895 during the first Sino-Japanese War, through the signature of the Treaty of Shimonoseki. The Potsdam Declaration (which Japan accepted as part of the San Francisco Peace Treaty ending its involvement in World War II) required that Japan to return the above islands to China.

I am Vietnamese. Our land was attacked and taken by Chinese many times. For example, the south of Chinese today (Guangxi, Guangdong) was the North of Vietnam in the past. They also took our Paracel Islands in 1974, and attacked our north border in 1979 to cover Khmer Rouge (Pol Pot).

I do not recall any incidents of Mainland China or Taiwan sending government or military vessels to this disputed region.

If WWII had gone the other way I wonder if we could even consider discussing issues of this nature.

1) Look at the recorded history to present, and see which country of the 3 making claim to the Islands, (Mainland China, Japan and Taiwan) has been most aggressive

2) Take into account also the proximity of the islands to those 3 countries laying claim.

I my humble opinion most should go to Taiwan, and maybe 2 to Mainland China, and 1 to Japan as a gesture of good faith. Then all move on and stop with the greed that has plagued mankind.

These Islands are situated closest to Taiwan, followed by the China's pacific shelf then to Japans most southern Island.
