No, nearest Amtrak station is in Newport News, which is across the Chesapeake Bay. We might get a high speed rail station in downtown Norfolk, but light rail is the only future for rail in Virginia Beach.
@NateNATENate19 Amtrak is supposed to start coming to Norfolk in 3 years or less. The track in this video has been redone with concret ties for the new light rail system.
@tdluvs Yes, the light rail should open soon. They have redone the tracks for service up until the Virginia Beach city line. As of today, the section of tracks in Virginia Beach remain in this condition.
The reason for no traffic on this line was also the fact that Vulcan Materials had two plants....one in VB one in Norfolk and consolidated. Asphalt Roads at Euclid siding didnt warrant enough business and I beleieve they're the outfit that decided to get materials trucked in. Georgia Pacific quit getting rail service too. When I hired on we had six customers on the line. Slowly but surely most went to trucks because of service. The speed limit was 10 mph so 15 is out of the question.
P.S. I'll have to show you my video from the VHS-C archives of a train running thru Virginia Beach. I only caught one unfortunately, and it was one of the last to run on the line.
Nice video, Colin! It's a shame that this line is exempt. It always makes me sad whenever I drive over the tracks and see them so rusted up. Also of note, regarding what you said about running "as needed", I do remember that there were some days when no trains ran at all. However, I have seen as many as two in one day within hours of each other, so traffic was variable. Thanks so much for adding this video, man, it really does bring back memories.
In Pennsylvania, they leave exempt crossings alone

there was a line abandoned in the town next to mine and instead of using exempt signs they used "tracks out of service" signs.

@nsgevo89 how do you get to the video?

You can't, it's on analog format, and I don't have the hardware to convert the analog signal to a digital signal. Sorry! :(
