LMAO! The treble? News to me. Funk is not a formula, it's a feeling. Bass players, just find what works best for you. The copycats don't know what they are talking about. Just play what you feel.
One of the "secrets" of Larry's classic bass work is the LACK of treble. It's not a bright sound, it's all low and mid, giving you that beat, that punch, like a drum. The sad part is, with treble added, the treble always WINS and you don't hear and feel the bass and mid. Keep the treble out, and FEEL the bass!
@OFR thanks for the comment, then I guess you've never seen Larry in person, he's slammin' with bass, mid and treble. Especially treble during the late 70s, when he switched from nylon strings to nickel.
@geosh78 I have seen him many times, and this is why I said "classic" bass work - the sound he had after 1976 or so is too bright and not considered (by many) as good. Certainly it sounds more like Mark King and others of the treble team, and it lost the deep thump it had before. He's LOUDER than ever, but I really don't think the tone is as good. Still, I'm a big fan of the playing, but the Moon basses and Hughes/Kettner amps don't sound as rich and fat. I simply like the classic tone better..
Larry is the authentic item. Check out LarryGrahamfans on youtube also. Larry starts the 2010 tour in SanFran on April second then heads to Europe. He'll have his cream moonshine basses, to go.
slap /= funk. The groove is in the line not in the technique. While beeing showoffs and trying to look cool you slappers forgetting the most mportant thing in playing bass.
This video was created upon request by relatives and friends who were new bassist having a hard time catching the line as originally recorded because of all the other instruments. Why can't we all get along?
no it didnt. Name me one bassist from a succesfull band of a past decade or two that would name a some slap master as one of his major influences or inspirations. I know it involves lots of practice and shit. Covers percussion and lots of other stuff. But slap solo will never sound as rich as a band doing its job, neither will band sound rich with a bassist who instead of playing actual bassline will slap. You said it yourself, cannot catch it with all other instruments.
Flea, Les Claypool, Victor Wooten, and a host of others... I actually feel a tad bit of resentment or hatred towards this playing style. I said "you" (as in new bassist) can't catch with all the other instruments. If you really don't like it, stay away from it. We "all" have freedom of choice.
@VarykGerai furthermore, the world's most famous internet bassist MARLOWEDK even gives full respect and kudos to Larry Graham. Again, if you really don't like this style, stay away from pages that specifically reference it. You taking this way out of reality at this point.
@VarykGerai and lmao at you using the last decade as a reference when music mainstream has been dead or pure crap since the lol. your either white or suburban chances are both. and you have never felt music or played with a bit of emotion in your life and you must be 25 or under. your a retard a real musician would laugh at you.
I wore the vinyl out on 2 copies of the GCS album "Ain't No Bout A Doubt It" to make sure I could handle it note for note. Didn't know I had worn the vinyl out on the first until I got the second one. Hhahahahaaaa!!!
Thanks, but because I'm not playing with the original cut recorded @ WMG or elsewhere they've left it alone for now. The version withs the original cut that I played with my neck through spector was banned over a month ago. LOL.

The treble is what gives slap bass the pop. Do you by any chance use a small amp?

Man if you claim to do Larry Graham stuff, you should at least use some fuzz. There's no Graham bass without fuzz, man.

This song doesn't quite work right without the drums, with all the slightly offbeat notes and all.
Still, this is some groovy shit, nice job!

Some beautiful bass playing, and an amusingly appropriate title for the video in these nervous times for youtube. :D
Thanks for being the first to comment on one of my video's by the way, it's greatly appreciated. Glad to finally have some feedback.
