It was nice watching you draw, the end result was very busy and expressive, a pleasant relief from all this photo realistic drawing, creating fake photographs, thanks for a sight worth seeing.
Great drawing but unnecessary steps were taken to achieve the end product. Once you train your brain to see the face as a whole in geometric shapes you will spend much less time on measuring.
I agree with this comment a little because I can do what your saying but the guy doing the drawing, has no way of knowing or gauging the knowledge of those watching. I think he is providing a very informative in instruction. It is good to try everything you can think of and then cut corners. It is also nice to realise you actually know what your doing, I think its a great video precisely because of what you have said.
Thank you both, Gary Geraths and xandshescreamedi.
Great art ! I really loved it. This is the STRUCTURE of the model, not a FINISHED drawing. The structure is for proportions and shapes, when he would finish the picture it would look the same as the model. I really loved it & don't think it was too complicated. Great video ! :)
if you'r wondering why there isn't model shown in the video, im willing to bet it is because the model would feel uncomfortable having themselves on video for thousands to look at. Think about it... great work btw!
i think it's great that you have all sorts of knowledge of anatomy, but not every face is the same, the measurements and placement of features differ in everyone, and so i disagree with your use of a structural model as opposed to seeing the model to do so - if you had done this, the features would be more accurate, and you would achieve an artistic impression of the person in front of you, instead of a genereic human face. you might as well have traced it - for me this isnt what art is about.

I've always just used a 5b or a 6b when drawing, and apply more or less pressure when needed, but does anyone think I should try using lighter pencils for somethink like this
i used to want to draw this way until i did a life drawing class and we did gesture drawing. once you start drawing with freedom and instinct it's very hard to make yourself draw mechanically as this is. not saying it's bad at all, it's just entirely different from my perspective.
@mudprimitive At one store i saw a wooden figure (like couple of inches in height) that was suppose to help in figure drawing. you could change its positions somewhat. I was wondering if there is a small "head" with eyes, ears etc so one can use as a reference for drawing ? thx
@AIMANALI - oh yeah. If you want to focus on heads you might get a model of the human skull (life-size). This helps get you an understanding of the underlying structures and how they affect facial features. You can also get a plaster head that shows the various planes of the head. For that check out Utrecht.com and search Torino.
This is one of best explanation i have ever seen because this artist use the classical way to teach it. It.s very honest and transparent with the the strokes. Today nobody use the skull to learn, but it.s real. Congrats....!
@LuisCADesigns _ваша хвалебная запись подтверждает ,что Вы действительно ,лучшее --не видели,а жаль -воспитываться на плохих примерах приводит в тупик
its very hard technique in portrait, just take a look at ur photo, copy exactly the size of the photo u wanna draw, and also notice if the two eyes is level, or slanting depends on the pic you draw.just line everything, the nose, mouth,,look carefully every egde of the eys, nose, and mouth, where exactly located...
Great draftsmanship. It seems like following the skeletal structure is the best practice. Looks really harsh but once you erase all the lines the softness shows through.

why measure everything...this isn't math. If every artist would do like in this video...then everyone could as well just use a digital camera. And give the phoo a sketch filter in photoshop. This is retarded...
the drawings to the right are from mr goffried bammes a german anatomy teacher, he is incredible!!!!!! his books are the best i ever found!!!!! they should have them in english!
lol. There is no real art department at MIT. The only related thing is architecture. Even in the intro art classes seem teach a lot more about architecture/technical stuff than fine arts (much to my dismay ).
Thanks! She is a great model & person, beautiful face and spirit. This is hopefully the first of a couple of these demonstration videos. This one shows the structure and measurements of a "portrait" the next video will be (if tis funded) about fleshing it out and showing the light and shading. Thanks again for looking.
This is how foundation head drawing is taught at most art and design schools like Otis and Art Center for illustrators. It's meant to teach you how to see proportions, value, line quality, etc and through pencil mileage allow you to draw from life accurately w/o having to do the construction. Speaking as an illustrator and not a fine artist (they have different concerns), good drawing is a prereq for painting.
A drawing like this might not really be your final product as an illustrator. It's a learning tool. Once you know this stuff, it also becomes easier to draw heads from imagination that look and feel real, whether for illustration, entertainment design, fine art or any other purpose.
We spend 3 to 4 terms at Art Center on foundation skills, but the other 4 terms are spent on personal style and developing conceptual skills. Nothing in our show gallery looks like this even though all illustration students learn this to begin with.
it's sad, so many hipster "art is soul" faggots posting in here. Take your segways, berets, black turtleneck sweaters, and ipods and go ride into starbucks where you can debate about deep interpretations of squiggles and other bullshit
This is an amazing short video on understanding how to develop correct proportions in portrait drawing. I value this teacher's experience. Is this video available in a longer DVD version? Was the drawing taken to completion?
Please don't mistake me for being rude, im being blunt. This is way too mechanical, it's steps. Unique vision cannot be achieved with this nor training the eye to see. I only make this point because some of you seem interested in the realism tradition, if so message me. I can back up what I say, i very well assure you.
Gary's a great teacher. One of the best I've had at Otis. As far as the harsh lines? You create a darker and darker line quality as you advance through the portrait. When you're done, those previously harsh lines blend in and look like - well, like shadowing. His work always has a lot of dimension to it, precisely because he spends so much time on the inside of the drawing, rather than sketching an outline.
At last a real portrait artist. You must see all the Photo copyist out there...and listen to their fans...'you're my God' and such, it's scary. Great skills, Gary. I'm interested as to whether you use construction lines when working alone and not giving intsruction, just curious.
when you sketched everything, gum everything out slightly, so you can still see it pretty clear!, also erease most of the reference lines without erasing the.. uh nose or so ^^
when you start doing the shadows and the outlines you wont see them anymore.. i guess
This video helped me a lot with understanding proportions, thank you :)
